HLA Matching Trumps Donor Age: Donor-Recipient Pairing Characteristics That Impact Long-Term Success in Living Donor Kidney Transplantation in the Era of Paired Kidney Exchange.

Background: We sought to identify donor characteristics influencing long-term graft survival, expressed by a novel measure, kidney life years (KLYs), in living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT).

Methods: Cox and multiple regression analyses were applied to data from the Scientific Registry for Transplant Research from 1987 to 2015. Dependent variable was KLYs.

We fabricate and characterise an optical structure consisting of a photonic crystal L3 nanocavity containing two gold nanodisks placed close to a field antinode. We use finite difference time domain (FDTD) modelling to show that the optical properties of the nanocavity are sensitive to the physical separation between the gold nanodisks, and that at reduced separation, the q-factor of a cavity mode polarised parallel to the dimer long-axis is reduced, indicating coupling between the cavity mode and a localised plasmon. Preliminary experimental measurements indeed indicate a damping of the cavity mode in the presence of the dimer; a result consistent with the FDTD modelling.

Five related Boer goat kids (≤4 months of age) were presented to the University of Missouri, Veterinary Teaching Hospital (MU-VMTH) with epiphora and blepharospasm of several weeks duration and commencing prior to 1 month of age in all animals. Clinical examination confirmed euryblepharon and entropion bilaterally in two females and one male and unilaterally in two female kids. Deep stromal corneal ulceration was present in two eyes, and corneal granulation tissue and fibrosis were present in half (5/10) the affected eyes.

This study was conducted to evaluate the association between subclinical intramammary infection (IMI) with coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), mammary quarter milk somatic cell count (SCC), and persistence of IMI in dairy cattle. Convenience samples of CNS isolates harvested from milk samples of subclinically infected mammary quarters collected between 4 and 2wk before drying-off, between 2wk before drying-off and the day of drying-off, within 24h after calving, between 1 and 2wk after calving, and during lactation were evaluated. Isolates were obtained from the Canadian Bovine Mastitis Research Network culture bank and were identified to the species level using rpoB gene sequencing.

Sources of life strengths appraisal scale: a multidimensional approach to assessing older adults' perceived sources of life strengths.

Both cognitive and psychosocial theories of adult development stress the fundamental role of older adults' appraisals of the diverse sources of cognitive and social-emotional strengths. This study reports the development of a new self-appraisal measure that incorporates key theoretical dimensions of internal and external sources of life strengths, as identified in the gerontological literature. Using a pilot study sample and three other independent samples to examine older adults' appraisals of their sources of life strengths which helped them in their daily functioning and to combat life challenges, adversity, and losses, a psychometric instrument having appropriate reliability and validity properties was developed.

Microfabricated atom optics benefit from all of these properties, and we present the first demonstration of the amalgamation of spintronic technology with ultracold atoms.

The occurrence of Clostridium difficile infections in patients that do not fulfill the classical risk factors prompted us to investigate new risk factors of disease. The goal of this study was to characterize strains and associated antimicrobial resistance determinants of C. difficile isolated from swine raised in Ohio and North Carolina.

Cognitive beliefs and future time perspectives: predictors of mortality and longevity.

On the basis of postulates derived from cognitive-behavioral theory, research and therapy, the authors explored the extent to which older adults' cognitive beliefs of a just world and their perspectives on future time and similarity or self-continuity with the future self are predictors of long-term survival. After baseline assessment of health and cognitive beliefs and future perspectives of time and self-continuity as predictors of mortality, 440 participants (ages 65 to 87) were followed longitudinally for 6.5 years.

Perfectionism and other related trait measures as predictors of mortality in diabetic older adults: a six-and-a-half-year longitudinal study.

After baseline assessment of health and perfectionism trait measures, 385 diabetic older adults were followed for six-and-a-half years. We hypothesized that the potential for increased stress associated with perfectionism leads to an increased risk of impending mortality for diabetics. Contrary to our hypothesis, mortality risk was 29 percent lower for high scorers on the perfectionism (self-oriented) dimension, compared to low scorers.
