Fusion of a single influenza virion particle with BLM.

One of the key stages of cell infection with influenza virus is the enveloped virus fusion with the cell endosome membrane. To study fusion of single fluorescently-labeled influenza virions with a model bilayer membrane (BLM), a special model system was developed. A small patch of BLM with several adsorbed virions was localized upon a contact with a glass micropipette.

Observation of the Omega(0)(c) Charmed Baryon at CLEO.

The CLEO experiment at the CESR collider has used 13.7 fb(-1) of data to search for the production of the Omega(0)(c) (css ground state) in e(+)e(-) collisions at square root of (s) approximately 10.6 GeV.

Observation of B --> phiK and B --> phiK*.

We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into the final states straight phiK and phiK(*). Using 9.7 million B&Bmacr; pairs collected with the CLEO II detector, we observe the decays B- --> phiK- and B0--> phiK(*0) with the following branching fractions: B(B--->phiK-) = (5.

Evidence of New States Decaying into Xi(*)(c)pi.

Using 13.7 fb(-1) of data recorded by the CLEO detector at Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report evidence of two new charmed baryons: one decaying into Xi(0')(c)pi(+) with the subsequent decay Xi(0')(c)-->Xi(0)(c)gamma, and its isospin partner decaying into Xi(+')(c)pi(-) followed by Xi(+')(c)-->Xi(+)(c)gamma. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: M(Xi(0)(c)gammapi(+))-M(Xi(0)(c)) = 318.

Search for B --> tau(nu) and B --> K(nu)nu.

We report results of a search for B-->tau(nu) in a sample of 9.7 x 10(6) charged B meson decays. We exclusively reconstruct the companion B decay to suppress background.

Measurement of the relative branching fraction of upsilon(4S) to charged and neutral B-meson pairs.

We analyze 9.7x10(6) B_B pairs recorded with the CLEO detector to determine the production ratio of charged to neutral B-meson pairs produced at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure the rates for B0-->J/psiK((*)0) and B+-->J/psiK((*)+) decays and use the world-average B-meson lifetime ratio to extract the relative widths f(+-) / f(00) = gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B+B-) / gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B0 B-0)) = 1.

First observation of the decays B(0) --> D(*-)p_p pi+ and B(0) --> D(*-)p_n.

We report the first observation of exclusive decays of the type B-->D(*)N_NX, where N is a nucleon. Using a sample of 9.7x10(6)B_B pairs collected with the CLEO detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we measure the branching fractions B(B0-->D(*-)p_p pi(+)) = (6.

Measurement of the lambda(+)(c) lifetime.

The Lambda+c lifetime is measured using 9.0 fb(-1) of e+e- annihilation data collected on or just below the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the CLEO II.V detector at CESR.

[Changes in immune state in patients with duodenal ulcer disease].

There were examined 73 patients with giant ulcer (GU) of the duodenum and 62--with the smaller size ulcer of the duodenum. In majority of patients essential disorders of immune state were revealed: reduction of the T-lymphocytes quantity, disbalance of their subpopulation composition, the rise of the circulating immune complexes level, activization of autoimmune reactions. In patients with duodenal GU immune disorders were more pronounced, than in the presence of the smaller size duodenal ulcer.

Voltage-induced nonconductive pre-pores and metastable single pores in unmodified planar lipid bilayer.

Electric fields promote pore formation in both biological and model membranes. We clamped unmodified planar bilayers at 150-550 mV to monitor transient single pores for a long period of time. We observed fast transitions between different conductance levels reflecting opening and closing of metastable lipid pores.

[Clinical forms of ischemic heart disease and natural evolution of live information-thermodynamic systems].

Clinical forms of myocardial ischemia are considered in terms of a new approach towards illness formation as a violation of information exchange in a human organism. The latter is suggested to be an open information-thermodynamic system developing to a closed equilibrium stationary thermodynamic system with information as a factor of system stability and direction of the evolution guided by the second thermodynamic law.

Multiple local contact sites are induced by GPI-linked influenza hemagglutinin during hemifusion and flickering pore formation.

Membrane fusion intermediates induced by the glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked ectodomain of influenza hemagglutinin (GPI-HA) were investigated by rapid freeze, freeze-substitution, thin section electron microscopy, and with simultaneous recordings of whole-cell admittance and fluorescence. Upon triggering, the previously separated membranes developed numerous hourglass shaped points of membrane contact (approximately 10-130 nm waist) when viewed by electron microscopy. Stereo pairs showed close membrane contact at peaks of complementary protrusions, arising from each membrane.

First observation of the sigma(*+)(c) baryon and a new measurement of the sigma(*+)(c) mass.

Using data recorded with the CLEO II and CLEO II.V detector configurations at the Cornell Electron Storage Rings, we report the first observation and mass measurement of the Sigma(*+)(c) charmed baryon, and an updated measurement of the mass of the Sigma(+)(c) baryon. We find M(Sigma(*+)(c))-M(Lambda(+)(c)) = (231.

Study of B Decays to Charmonium States: B-->eta(c)K and B --> chi(c0)K.

[Cytogenetic disorders iin patients with chronic hepatitis B and C].

The chromosomal apparatus of peripheral blood lymphocytes was studied in 19 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and 17 patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Clinical symptoms of acute coronary insufficiency correlate with GP-IIIa genotype of integrin beta-subunit.

Studies of the clinical course of acute coronary insufficiency (progressive angina and myocardial infarction) in patients carrying a mutant allele of the Pl-A(II) gene encoding integrin GPIIIa beta-subunit revealed significant differences in the incidence of some clinical signs in comparison with patients homozygous for the normal Pl-A(I) allele.

Measurements of the mass, total width, and two-photon partial width of the eta(c) meson.

Using 13.4 fb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have observed 300 events for the two-photon production of ground-state pseudoscalar charmonium in the decay eta(c)-->K(0)(S)K-/+pi(+/-). We have measured the eta(c) mass to be [2980.

Study of charmless hadronic B meson decays to pseudoscalar-vector final states.

We report results of searches for charmless hadronic B meson decays to pseudoscalar( pi(+/-), K+/-, pi(0), or K(0)(S))-vector( rho, K(*), or omega) final states. By using 9.7x10(6) BB pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we report the first observation of B(-)--->pi(-)rho(0), B(0)-->pi(+/-)rho(-/+), and B(-)-->pi(-)omega, which are expected to be dominated by hadronic b-->u transitions.

Evidence for valencelike quark-hadron duality.

A newly obtained data sample of inclusive electron-nucleon scattering from both hydrogen and deuterium targets is analyzed. These JLab data span the nucleon resonance region up to four-momentum transfers of 5 (GeV/c)(2). The data are found to follow an average scaling curve.

Hemagglutinin-induced fusion of HAb2 and PLC cells: dynamics of fusion pore conductance.

Infection of cells with influenza virus is mediated by the virus envelope protein hemagglutinin (HA) which induces fusion of viral and target membranes. Earlier we showed using fluorescent microscopy that HAb2 cells expressing HA on their plasma membranes fused with PLC cells when pH of the external medium was decreased to -5. In the present work we used double whole-cell recording to monitor the intercellular conductance in HAb2/PLC cell pairs during fusion.

[The efficacy of amizon in the combined treatment of patients with epidemic parotitis].

Efficacy was studied of a new anti-inflammatory interferon-inducing drug preparation amizon in a combined therapy of epidemic parotiditis in 118 patients versus the group of comparison consisting of 147 patients. A positive effect was ascertained of the drug on clinical parameters, decrease in the incidence rate and in severity of complications (orchitis, pancreatitis), immune indices.

Study of conductance changes of bilayer lipid membrane induced by electric field.

Changes in the bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) conductance induced by electric field were studied. BLMs were formed from diphytanoylphosphocholine (DPhPC) solution in squalene. Certain time after a constant voltage (200-500 mV) was applied to the BLM in the voltage-clamp mode, the BLM conductance started to grow up to approximately 10 nS until the BLM ruptured.

[The energy-informational role of the right ventricle in the informational-thermodynamic system of the heart].

Criteria for estimation of the energy-informational requirements of the right and left ventricles have been obtained using morphological data of the chronobiological experiment performed at Pathophysiology Chair of the RPFU in 1984. The estimates, due to greater energy-informational support of the right ventricle, demonstrate the leading role of the right ventricle, in regulation of the heart's informational-thermodynamic system (ITDS). The role of the left ventricle consists in maintenance of the heart contractility.
