Purpose Of Review: Peripheral nerve blocks are performed using local anesthetics that are commonly performed prior to surgery to either be the sole anesthetic and/or for postoperative pain management. Interscalene blocks are a specific type of nerve block that targets the superior and middle trunks of the brachial plexus inhibiting transmission of pain signals from the upper extremities to the central nervous system making them useful in mitigating pain following surgeries involving the shoulder, upper arm, and elbow.

Recent Findings: Previously, interscalene blocks were performed with a nerve stimulator, which is an instrument designed to generate a twitch in surrounding muscles to verify the anesthetic block was placed in the correct location.

Etizolam is a thienodiazepine derivative which produces an anxiolytic effect similar to benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax). Like classic benzodiazepines, etizolam has a high affinity towards the GABA receptor, and allosterically potentiates the effects of GABA resulting in neuronal hyperpolarization related to chloride influx. When taken in therapeutic doses, etizolam produces a similar effect to Xanax.

The laser-induced decay of an atomic system in an intense infrared and perturbative extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse is considered within Keldysh and streaking ionization channels. The streak camera method is discussed for two cases corresponding to different ranges of photoelectron momentum: i) the streaking channel significantly dominates the Keldysh channel and ii) the Keldysh channel of ionization is dominant, while two channels may interfere. The retrieval of XUV pulse parameters for these two cases is discussed and supported by numerical calculations.

We show that the quasistatic dipole moment can be induced by a short extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse (XUV rectification effect) in atomic gas medium subjected to an intense infrared (IR) field (IR-dressed atoms). The general theory of the XUV rectification effect for a single IR-dressed atom is presented, which explicitly relates IR-modified polarizability of an atomic system in the XUV range with the induced quasistatic dipole moment. We illustrate general properties of the XUV rectification effect in an atomic system within the analytical zero-range potential model by presenting the dependence on the IR-field intensity and the time delay between XUV and IR pulses.

We report on a gain-switched operation of single-crystal Fe:ZnSe pumped by a coupled-cavity Q-switched Er:ZrF fiber laser. With this approach, we use a continuous wave Er-doped ZrF fiber laser whose cavity is coupled with the Fe:ZnSe laser cavity. A stable Q switching operation of the Er-doped fiber laser was achieved in this case and, as a result, a gain-switched operation of the Fe:ZnSe laser was obtained.

We analyze the polarization response of a single Ne atom in an intense infrared (IR) laser field and weak extreme ultraviolet (XUV) isolated attosecond pulse (IAP). The analysis is based on the numerical solution of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations and the recently developed perturbation theory in the XUV field for an atom subjected to an intense IR field. In our numerical results, we observe a significant increase in the magnitude of the atomic polarization response at the frequencies near the carrier frequency of the IAP and associate it with XUV-induced collective dynamics contributing to the polarizability of Ne.

We report on measurements highlighting the spectral dependence of the principal axes' angular orientation that is present within three hollow-core fibers samples of various geometries. Hollow-core anti-resonant fibers (ARFs) with six, five, and four capillaries are investigated in several transmission windows. It is shown that the six-capillary fiber structure demonstrates a much smaller shift in the principal axes' orientation, in comparison with five- and four-capillary structures.
