The mechanism of action for laryngeal manual therapies: the need for an update.

Purpose Of Review: To propose a pathway for expanding the understanding of potential mechanisms of action with laryngeal-based manual therapy (LMT) for muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). This review may help determine if current LMT literature has kept up with advances in the more general manual therapy (MT) findings.

Recent Findings: Studies over the past thirty years, including recently published articles, have confirmed the efficacy of various manual therapy interventions in treating MTD.

From tablet to table: How augmented reality influences food desirability.

Unlabelled: Augmented reality (AR) technology has generated enormous industry investment and buzz, with the food and beverage sector quickly embracing this technology in an effort to enhance the customer experience. However, academic research has only just begun to empirically explore how and why this technology might influence consumer judgements and behaviors in such contexts. Across two field studies involving consequential behavior and two controlled laboratory studies, we find that AR's unique ability to visually superimpose objects onto a real-time environment increases consumers' ability to mentally simulate consuming a pictured food, which in turn increases their desire and purchase likelihood of the food item.

Congenital Unilateral Renal Aplasia in a Cynomolgus Monkey () With Investigation Into Potential Pathogenesis.

We describe and characterize unilateral renal aplasia in a cynomolgus monkey () from a chronic toxicology study adding to the limited histopathology reports of congenital renal anomalies in macaques. In the current case, the affected kidney was macroscopically small and characterized microscopically by a thin cortex with an underdeveloped medulla and an absent papilla. The remnant medulla lacked a corticomedullary junction and contained only a few irregular collecting duct-like structures.

Differential effects of androgens, estrogens and socio-sexual context on sexual behaviors in the castrated male goat.

The behavioral and endocrine activation of sexual behaviors exhibited by male goats, especially self-enurination (SE), is poorly understood. In the first experiment, to assess the influence of socio-sexual context on SE in bucks, the effects of distance from does, the presence of estrous versus non-estrous does and the presence of another buck on SE and courtship frequencies of intact male goats (bucks; n = 12) were tested using a unique behavior test apparatus. For experiments 2 and 3, to test the relative contributions of sex steroid hormones and socio-sexual context on SE, castrated male goats (wethers; n = 20) were randomly divided into five groups and injected for seven weeks with one of the following: 25 mg testosterone propionate (T), 25 mg dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHT), 100 μg estradiol benzoate (E), 100 μg E and 25 mg DHT (E + DHT), or oil (CON).

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin has both pro-carcinogenic and anti-carcinogenic effects on neuroendocrine prostate carcinoma formation in TRAMP mice.

It is well established that the prototypical aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) agonist 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) can both cause and protect against carcinogenesis in non-transgenic rodents. But because these animals almost never develop prostate cancer with old age or after carcinogen exposure, whether AHR activation can affect cancer of the prostate remained unknown. We used animals designed to develop this disease, Transgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate (TRAMP) mice, to investigate the potential role of AHR signaling in prostate cancer development.

[Non-invasive and invasive out of hospital ventilation in chronic respiratory failure : Consensus report of the working group on ventilation and intensive care medicine of the Austrian Society of Pneumology].

The current consensus report was compiled under the patronage of the Austrian Society of Pneumology (Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Pneumologie, ÖGP) with the intention of providing practical guidelines for out-of-hospital ventilation that are in accordance with specific Austrian framework parameters and legal foundations. The guidelines are oriented toward a 2004 consensus ÖGP recommendation concerning the setup of long-term ventilated patients and the 2010 German Respiratory Society S2 guidelines on noninvasive and invasive ventilation of chronic respiratory insufficiency, adapted to national experiences and updated according to recent literature. In 11 chapters, the initiation, adjustment, and monitoring of out-of-hospital ventilation is described, as is the technical equipment and airway access.

Alternate-day dosing with statins.

The duration of the cholesterol-lowering effect of statins is considerably longer than the duration of the pharmacokinetic half-life of these drugs. The long duration of pharmacologic effects provides the rational for the efficacy of intermittent dosing that provides nearly the equivalent low-density lipoprotein cholesterol reduction compared with daily dosing. Review of studies comparing alternate-day dosing with daily dosing of statins indicates that the magnitude of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol reduction with alternate-day dosing is nearly the same, with obvious cost savings.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a pain condition of the extremities that presents with pain and allodynia, decreased range of motion, swelling and skin changes. There are 2 forms of CRPS - Type I which does not have demonstrable nerve lesions and Type 2, which has evidence of obvious nerve damage. Management of refractory CRPS has been challenging.

Double-blinded, placebo-controlled, prospective randomized trial evaluating the efficacy of paravertebral block with and without continuous paravertebral block analgesia in outpatient breast cancer surgery.

Background: Paravertebral block (PVB) is an effective alternative to general anesthesia for breast cancer surgery. Continuous paravertebral block (CPVB) anesthesia may extend postoperative analgesia at home and improve quality of early postoperative recovery of breast cancer patients.

Purpose: This double-blinded randomized trial was conducted to compare degree of pain, nausea, mood, level of symptom distress, and time to return to normal daily activity between PVB and PVB + CPVB in patients undergoing outpatient breast cancer surgery.

Pathophysiologic mechanisms, diagnosis, and management of dapsone-induced methemoglobinemia.

Dapsone is a leprostatic agent commonly prescribed for the treatment of patients with leprosy, malaria, and a variety of blistering skin diseases, including dermatitis herpetiformis. Methemoglobinemia, a potentially life-threatening condition in which the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood in body tissues is reduced, is a known adverse effect of dapsone use. The authors report a case of dapsone-induced methemoglobinemia observed in the emergency department during routine workup for contact dermatitis in a patient with celiac disease.

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a basic-helix-loop-helix transcription factor that binds halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and endogenous compounds. We previously reported that AhR null (Ahr(-/-)) transgenic adenocarcinoma of the mouse prostate (TRAMP) mice on a C57BL/6J background develop prostate tumors with much greater frequency than AhR wild-type (Ahr(+/+)) TRAMP mice, suggesting that the AhR has tumor suppressor properties. Because AhR signaling pathway inactivation increased susceptibility to prostate tumorigenesis, we tested the hypothesis that a selective AhR modulator (SAhRM), 6-methyl-1,3,8-trichlorodibenzofuran (6-MCDF), can protect against prostate tumorigenesis.

WNT5A selectively inhibits mouse ventral prostate development.

The establishment of prostatic budding patterns occurs early in prostate development but mechanisms responsible for this event are poorly understood. We investigated the role of WNT5A in patterning prostatic buds as they emerge from the fetal mouse urogenital sinus (UGS). Wnt5a mRNA was expressed in UGS mesenchyme during budding and was focally up-regulated as buds emerged from the anterior, dorsolateral, and ventral UGS regions.

Formation of prostatic buds from the urogenital sinus (UGS) to initiate prostate development requires localized action of several morphogenetic factors. This report reveals all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) to be a powerful inducer of mouse prostatic budding that is associated with reciprocal changes in expression of two regulators of budding: sonic hedgehog (Shh) and bone morphogenetic protein 4 (Bmp4). Localization of retinoid signaling and expression of RA synthesis, metabolism, and receptor genes in the UGS on embryonic days 14.

Sevoflurane provides earlier tracheal extubation and assessment of cognitive recovery than isoflurane in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.

Objective: To determine whether sevoflurane, because of its lower blood/gas partition coefficient, compared with isoflurane as the primary anesthetic agent, allows earlier tracheal extubation and assessment of cognitive function after off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery.

Design: Prospectively, patients were randomly assigned to receive sevoflurane or isoflurane as their primary anesthetic. Intraoperative opioids were limited to 5 microg/kg of fentanyl.
