Structural characterization of a pentacene monolayer on an amorphous SiO2 substrate with grazing incidence x-ray diffraction.

Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction reveals that a pentacene monolayer, grown on an amorphous SiO2 substrate that is commonly used as a dielectric layer in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), is crystalline. A preliminary energy-minimized model of the monolayer, based on the GIXD data, reveals that the pentacene molecules adopt a herringbone arrangement with their long axes tilted slightly from the substrate normal. Although this arrangement resembles the general packing features of the (001) layer in single crystals of bulk pentacene, the monolayer lattice parameters and crystal structure differ from those of the bulk.

Nasal mucosal gene expression in patients with allergic rhinitis with and without nasal polyps.

Background: Nasal polyps are a common problem that is difficult to diagnose and treat, in part because the cause of nasal polyposis is unknown. Although information on the pathogenesis of polyposis is lacking, there are reports suggesting that a genetic predisposition underlies this disorder.

Objective: We sought to better understand the basis of nasal polyposis associated with allergic rhinitis.

A comparison of phonemic, semantic, and alternating word fluency in Parkinson's disease.

Word fluency in 45 medicated non-demented Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and 45 normal control subjects was studied with a Phonemic Word Fluency (PWF) task using the letters F, A, and S, a Semantic Word Fluency (SWF) task using the categories animals, boys' names, and states, and an Alternating Word Fluency (AWF) task requiring the person to alternate between colors and occupations, animals and states, and words beginning with C and P. The number of words generated did not differ for trials with F, A, S, or states, but PD patients generated significantly fewer animal names and boys' names. PD patients also generated significantly fewer words on each of the three AWF trials.

Sex differences among five sources of motivation in the motivation sources inventory: preliminary findings.

Paper reports sex differences among five sources of motivation for a sample of 208 undergraduate students who completed the Motivation Sources Inventory. t tests yielded few statistically significant sex differences for the five sources of motivation; however, Instrumental Motivation was higher among men than women, while the remaining four motives showed no sex difference. Implications and research opportunities are discussed.

Transposon mutagenesis of the mouse germline.

Sleeping Beauty is a synthetic "cut-and-paste" transposon of the Tc1/mariner class. The Sleeping Beauty transposase (SB) was constructed on the basis of a consensus sequence obtained from an alignment of 12 remnant elements cloned from the genomes of eight different fish species. Transposition of Sleeping Beauty elements has been observed in cultured cells, hepatocytes of adult mice, one-cell mouse embryos, and the germline of mice.

Mdm30 is an F-box protein required for maintenance of fusion-competent mitochondria in yeast.

Mitochondrial fusion and fission play important roles for mitochondrial morphology and function. We identified Mdm30 as a novel component required for maintenance of fusion-competent mitochondria in yeast. The Mdm30 sequence contains an F-box motif that is commonly found in subunits of Skp1-Cdc53-F-box protein ubiquitin ligases.

Buckwheat pillow-induced asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Background: Immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated hypersensitivity is a mechanism suggested to explain adverse reactions to buckwheat. This is the first reported case in the United States of a person who developed asthma and worsening allergic rhinitis after exposure to a buckwheat pillow.

Objective: To describe a patient who developed asthma and worsening allergic rhinitis after exposure to a buckwheat pillow and to provide evidence that the adverse reaction was IgE-mediated.

Lake sediments record large-scale shifts in moisture regimes across the northern prairies of North America during the past two millennia.

Six high-resolution climatic reconstructions, based on diatom analyses from lake sediment cores from the northern prairies of North America, show that shifts in drought conditions on decadal through multicentennial scales have prevailed in this region for at least the last two millennia. The predominant broad-scale pattern seen at all sites is a major shift in moisture regimes from wet to dry, or vice versa (depending on location), that occurred after a period of relative stability. These large-scale shifts at the different sites exhibit spatial coherence at regional scales.

The inner membrane protein Mdm33 controls mitochondrial morphology in yeast.

Mitochondrial distribution and morphology depend on MDM33, a Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene encoding a novel protein of the mitochondrial inner membrane. Cells lacking Mdm33 contain ring-shaped, mostly interconnected mitochondria, which are able to form large hollow spheres. On the ultrastructural level, these aberrant organelles display extremely elongated stretches of outer and inner membranes enclosing a very narrow matrix space.

Correlations for leaders' anticipation of targets' resistance and targets' ratings of leaders' influence tactics: a replication.

A sample of 553 leader-target dyads was used to replicate the 2001 work of Barbuto, Scholl, Hickox, and Boulmetis. The study examined the correlation between leaders' anticipation of targets' resistance and influence tactics used by leaders to persuade targets. The original study reported mixed findings of various hard and soft tactics used by leaders based on the different zones of resistance anticipated.

Ovarian acetylcholine and muscarinic receptors: hints of a novel intrinsic ovarian regulatory system.

More than two decades ago, the degrading enzyme of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACH) was reported in nerve fibers of the rat ovary. Subsequently, it was assumed that ACH is a neurotransmitter of ovarian nerves, although the sole presence of the degrading enzyme, ACH-esterase, does not allow such a conclusion. That ACH may be involved in the complex regulation of ovarian functions, including hormone production, was indicated by studies using, for example, granulosa cells (GCs).

Development of an experimental ovarian tumor: immunocytochemical analysis.

Objective: The aim of the present work was to study whether immunocytochemical parameters present in the normal ovary were altered after tumor development under high gonadotropin levels.

Methods: Ovarian tumors (luteoma): castrated female rats had an ovary grafted into the spleen; tumors were left to develop for 1, 2, 3 or 7 months. The presence of apoptotic cells (TUNEL method) and the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), gap junction protein (Cx43), steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), aromatase and synaptosome-associated protein of 25 kDa (SNAP-25) were determined by immunocytochemistry.

Leaders' anticipated and targets' self-reported resistance to task assignments: a replication.

This is a follow up study of Barbuto's 2000 work in which leaders' ratings and targets' self-reported resistance to task assignments are compared. Scores on the Anticipated Resistance Indicator among 650 leader-member dyads measure resistance based on Barbuto's 1997 five concentric zones of Preference, Indifference, Legitimate, Influence, and Noninfluence, examined from both leaders' and targets' perspectives. Responses indicated that leaders tend to underestimate followers' willingness to perform assigned tasks.

Distinct cellular functions of MK2.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-activated protein kinase 2 (MK2) is activated upon stress by p38 MAPK alpha and -beta, which bind to a basic docking motif in the C terminus of MK2 and which subsequently phosphorylate its regulatory sites. As a result of activation MK2 is exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm and cotransports active p38 MAPK to this compartment. Here we show that the amount of p38 MAPK is significantly reduced in cells and tissues lacking MK2, indicating a stabilizing effect of MK2 for p38.

Early warming of tropical South America at the last glacial-interglacial transition.

Glaciation in the humid tropical Andes is a sensitive indicator of mean annual temperature. Here, we present sedimentological data from lakes beyond the glacial limit in the tropical Andes indicating that deglaciation from the Last Glacial Maximum led substantial warming at high northern latitudes. Deglaciation from glacial maximum positions at Lake Titicaca, Peru/Bolivia (16 degrees S), and Lake Junin, Peru (11 degrees S), occurred 22,000 to 19,500 calendar years before the present, several thousand years before the Bølling-Allerød warming of the Northern Hemisphere and deglaciation of the Sierra Nevada, United States (36.

Genetic basis of mitochondrial function and morphology in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The understanding of the processes underlying organellar function and inheritance requires the identification and characterization of the molecular components involved. We pursued a genomic approach to define the complements of genes required for respiratory growth and inheritance of mitochondria with normal morphology in yeast. With the systematic screening of a deletion mutant library covering the nonessential genes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae the numbers of genes known to be required for respiratory function and establishment of wild-type-like mitochondrial structure have been more than doubled.

Mammalian germ-line transgenesis by transposition.

Transposons have been used in invertebrates for transgenesis and insertional mutagens in genetic screens. We tested a functional transposon called Sleeping Beauty in the one-cell mouse embryo. In this report, we describe experiments in which transposon vectors were injected into one-cell mouse embryos with mRNA expressing the SB10 transposase enzyme.

Muscarinic receptors in human luteinized granulosa cells: activation blocks gap junctions and induces the transcription factor early growth response factor-1.

Acetylcholine (ACh) was recently described to be produced by and act on human luteinizing granulosa cells (GCs). Cholinergic agents increase intracellular calcium levels and stimulate GC proliferation via muscarinic receptors. Based on this observation and because endocrine cells of the forming human corpus luteum (CL), which are the in vivo counterparts of GCs, also proliferate in vivo, we hypothesized that ACh may be a factor involved in the regulation of the complex cellular events occurring during ovulation and formation of the CL.

Bioterrorism: relevance to allergy and immunology in clinical practice.

Allergists and immunologists care for a unique population of patients with several alterations of their immune system that might change the expected course of illnesses from biologic terror agents.

Leaders' bases of social power and anticipation of targets' resistance as predictors of transactional and transformational leadership.

This paper examines the value of power and resistance for predicting transactional and transformational leadership. A sample of 232 leader-follower dyads was used to examine these relationships using Hinkin and Schriesheim's 1989 measure of power, Barbuto's 2000 measure of resistance, and Bass' 1985 measure of transformational leadership. Analysis yielded a significant negative relationship between leaders' Reward Power and their use of Individualized Consideration.

We have tested a synthetic, functional, transposon called Sleeping Beauty for use in mice as a germline insertional mutagen. We describe experiments in which mutagenic, polyadenylation-site trapping, transposon vectors were introduced into the germline of mice.
