Many bird species commonly aggregate in flocks for reasons ranging from predator defense to navigation. Available evidence suggests that certain types of flocks-the V and echelon formations of large birds-may provide a benefit that reduces the aerodynamic cost of flight, whereas cluster flocks typical of smaller birds may increase flight costs. However, metabolic flight costs have not been directly measured in any of these group flight contexts [Zhang and Lauder, , jeb245617 (2023)].

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is frequent after liver transplantation (LT) and correlates with later development of chronic kidney disease. Its etiology is multifactorial and combines pre-, intra-, and postoperative factors. Additionally, the liver graft itself seems an important element in the development of AKI, yet the detailed mechanisms remain unclear.

Background: Immunosuppression with calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) is reportedly associated with risk of renal impairment in liver transplant recipients. It is believed that this can be mitigated by decreasing initial exposure to CNIs or delaying CNI introduction until 3-4 d posttransplantation. The ADVAGRAF studied in combination with mycophenolate mofetil and basiliximab in liver transplantation (DIAMOND) trial evaluated different administration strategies for prolonged-release tacrolimus (PR-T).

Background: The pharmacokinetics of tacrolimus (TAC) and mycophenolic acid (MPA) are highly variable. An impact of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the genes coding for enzymes and transporters involved in the pharmacokinetics of TAC and/or MPA is intuitively conceivable. Accordingly, we sought to analyze the influence of different SNPs on TAC and MPA exposure in pediatric renal transplant recipients.

Liver transplantation for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (hCCA) has regained attention since the Mayo Clinic reported their favorable results with the use of a neo-adjuvant chemoradiation protocol. However, debate remains whether the success of the protocol should be attributed to the neo-adjuvant therapy or to the strict selection criteria that are being applied. The aim of this study was to investigate the value of patient selection alone on the outcome of liver transplantation for hCCA.

Aim And Background: The Nordic Liver Transplant Registry (NLTR) accounts for all liver transplants performed in the Nordic countries since the start of the transplant program in 1982. Due to short waiting times, donor liver allocation has been made without considerations of the model of end-stage liver disease (MELD) score. We aimed to summarize key outcome measures and developments for the activity up to December 2013.

Background: Our program for ABO-incompatible renal transplantation includes antigen-specific immunoadsorption (extracorporeal columns with the A or B trisaccharides), rituximab, and standard maintenance immunosuppression. Anti-A or -B titers ≤ 8 in the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) against panel A1 or B RBC are acceptable for transplantation.

Case Report: A previously healthy, 15-month-old girl was diagnosed with Wilms' tumor and proteinuria.

Introduction: The introduction of hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) in the early 1990s dramatically reduced recurrence of hepatitis B after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) and thus improved survival. Today a combination of HBIG and a nucleoside or nucleotide analogue (NUC) is recommended as prophylaxis. The optimal protocol is yet to be commonly agreed upon.

Over the past decade, we have seen an increased number of patients living more than 20 years with their liver grafts. In turn, we are gaining more experience with recurrence of the original disease. Disease recurrence can be divided into 4 main groups: (1) malignant disease, (2) viral disease, (3) autoimmune diseases like primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSO), and finally (4) researched lifestyle that caused the original disease, eg, obesity causing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), or alcoholic liver disease (ALD).

Background & Aims: Previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding the course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) after liver transplantation in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). We studied the progression of IBD in patients with PSC who have undergone liver transplantation. We also studied risk factors, including medical therapy, that could influence on IBD disease activity.

Biomarker-based post-transplant immune monitoring for the prediction of impending graft rejection requires validation in specific patient populations. Serum of 28 pediatric renal transplant recipients within the framework of a well-controlled prospective randomized trial was analyzed pre- and post-transplant for soluble CD30 (sCD30), a biomarker reflecting mainly T-cell reactivity, and anti-human leukocyte antigen (anti-HLA) antibody reactivity, a biomarker for B-cell activation. A sCD30 concentration ≥40.

Polyomavirus BK (BKV)-associated nephropathy causes premature kidney transplant (KT) failure. BKV viruria and viremia are biomarkers of disease progression, but associated risk factors are controversial. A total of 682 KT patients receiving basiliximab, mycophenolic acid (MPA), corticosteroids were randomized 1:1 to cyclosporine (CsA) or tacrolimus (Tac).

Objective: Several studies have implicated primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) as an additional risk factor for colorectal neoplasia in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Some reports have indicated that the risk is even higher in PSC-IBD patients after liver transplantation (Ltx), but this issue is controversial. We aimed to compare the risk of colorectal neoplasia in PSC-IBD patients before and after Ltx and to identify risk factors for colorectal neoplasia post-transplant.

The treatment for cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) remains a challenge because of the aggressive nature of the disease and the absence of effective treatments besides surgical resection (HR) and liver transplantation (LT). In intrahepatic CCA, HR remains the treatment of choice whereas with concomitant liver disease such as cirrhosis or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), LT is the only option. Hilar CCA or Klatskin tumours have in recent decades been managed with a more aggressive surgical approach to achieve R0 resection.
