Background: Disorders of the gut-brain axis are public diseases ("Volkskrankheiten") and are among the most frequent reasons to visit a doctor. Despite their great medical and socio-economic importance, patients suffering from these disorders are often not taken seriously and, therefore, do not receive sufficient diagnostic evaluation, or a diagnosis, in conformity with the relevant guidelines. In addition, the inadequate compensation of services makes handling of neurogastroenterological disorders increasingly unattractive.

Analysis of eCLE with DFC in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) would be interesting to evaluate epithelial barrier dysfunction also in other regions of the gastrointestinal tract and to characterize potential individual food allergens that trigger the esophageal inflammation.
Methods: In an observational and proof of concept study we evaluated 9 patients with histologically proven EoE by eCLE and DFC.
Gastroenterology has made crucial advances in diagnostic and interventional endoscopic procedures, opening up improvements in the treatment of many patients.
