[Qualification of elderly workers in industry--problems and opportunities].

The aim of the research project was to find out the conditions of a successful occupational qualification of older workers in the Federal Republic of Germany. The more recent results of psychological research concerning the learning capacities of older people suppose that older workers can also be qualified successfully with regard to the requirements of their job. However, the project results reveal that certain basic conditions should be fulfilled for the qualification of older workers.

[Bone marrow transplantation in panmyelopathy, acute leukemia and chronic myelocytic leukemia: results of the Ulm Transplantation Group].

From 1972-1983 53 patients underwent bone marrow transplantation. The median age was 18 years (3-41). 27 patients suffered from severe aplastic anaemia, 22 patients had acute leukaemia and 4 patients had chronic granulocytic leukaemia in chronic phase.

Immunoreconstitution in severe combined immunodeficiency after transplantation of HLA-haploidentical, T-cell-depleted bone marrow.

Immunological reconstitution by transplantation of HLA-haploidentical, paternal bone marrow was attempted in four infants with severe combined immunodeficiency who lacked HLA-identical donors. To prevent graft-versus-host disease, T lymphocytes were removed from the grafts by agglutination with soybean agglutinin and rosette formation with sheep red blood cells. None of the patients received conditioning treatment before transplantation.

ATP levels in phosphate-deregulated and arsenate-resistant mutants of Streptomyces noursei.

Mycelial levels of ATP and glucose-6-phosphate were investigated in mutants of streptothricin-producing S. noursei JA 3880b differing from the wild-type strain in antibiotic formation, in the control by inorganic phosphate of the secondary metabolism, and in the resistance to growth inhibition by toxic arsenate ions. As compared with the ancestral strain, mutants exhibited a lower content of ATP in the mycelium while addition of 0.

Isolation and biological properties of arsenate-resistant strains of Streptomyces noursei.

Arsenate-resistant (AsR) clones were obtained with high frequency from colony populations of streptothricin-producing strains of Streptomyces noursei by the paper strip method. Whereas in the AsR-strains obtained from both wild type and mutant NG 13 the antibiotic production was reduced to approx. 60% of the parental level, the AsR clones isolated from colony populations of mutant UV 12 displayed increased productivity (less than or equal to 150%).

[Pregnancies caused by in vitro fertilization in cycles, stimulated with human hypophyseal gonadotropin and chorionic gonadotropin].

In a program of in vitro fertilization, laparoscopies for oocyte aspiration were performed on 35 patients receiving human pituitary gonadotropin (hPG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Of the 122 preovulatory oocytes which were recovered from these patients, 44 (36%) were fertilized and cleaved, and were transferred. 144 immature oocytes were collected, and attempts were made to mature these in vitro.

NK cell function in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID): evidence of a common T and NK cell defect in some but not all SCID patients.

The immunologic work-up of eight infants with the clinical diagnosis of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) was performed with special emphasis on natural killer (NK) cell function and ontogeny. Contrary to previous reports, our study shows that not all SCID patients lack NK activity; some may even express very high NK- and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC). The present group of eight SCID infants was homogeneous with respect to normal levels of the purine metabolism enzymes adenosine deaminase (ADA) and purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP).

Adaptation of families with mentally retarded children: a model of stress, coping, and family ecology.

Research concerned with families of mentally retarded children has often yielded inconsistent, and at times, contradictory findings. This inconsistency is partly due to methodological inadequacies and a narrow focus on unidimensional variables with unimodal measurements. In addition, no succinct model has been presented to explain family adaptation and the range of possible outcomes.

Monitoring of radioiodine in nuclear medical therapy.

The composition of the radioiodine species that is released in a hospital by nuclear medical therapy is investigated. More than 90% are found to be organic iodine. This leads to a reduction of the calculated radiation exposure in the environment by more than a factor of ten with regard to pure elemental iodine releases.

A short-form of the Questionnaire on Resources and Stress.

The measurement of stress in families of developmentally delayed or mentally retarded children has been a difficult task. The Questionnaire on Resources and Stress (QRS, Holroyd, 1974) was designed to answer this need, but the length and psychometric weaknesses of this instrument have interfered with more widespread usage. In the present investigation, data from 289 QRSs were item analyzed, and 52 items emerged as most reliable, forming a short form of the QRS.

Cultural differences in groups of parents of children with cancer: English- and Spanish-speaking.

Therapeutic groups of parents of children with cancer have been seen as potentially helpful to those parents who utilize the groups. The authors report on a study of the differing content raised in two parent groups, one English-speaking and one Spanish-speaking.

Abnormal humoral immune responses in peripheral blood lymphocyte cultures of bone marrow transplant recipients.

The present study was aimed at investigating recovery of humoral immunity in vitro after bone marrow transplantation in patients with acute leukemia and severe aplastic anemia. Hemolytic plaque assays were utilized to quantitate pokeweed mitogen-stimulated polyclonal immunoglobulin production and sheep erythrocyte antigen-specific antibody responses in cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 39 patients beginning at 1 month, for variable periods up to a maximum of 4 years after marrow transplantation. Three phases were identified: an early period of primary B cell dysfunction with concomitant immunoregulatory T cell abnormalities--i.

[Radio-immune assay for determination of testosterone and representation of Y-bodies - sufficiently dependable methods for prenatal diagnosis of sex (author's transl)].

Results obtained from prenatal diagnosis of sex by radio-immunological determination of testosterone in amniotic fluid are compared with findings recorded by representation of Y-bodies and with results of chromosomal analysis. In no single case was a false result obtained from the two former methods, when used together. Hence, chromosomal analysis proved to be necessary only in something between five and eight per cent of all examinations.

[Coincidence of lethal B-streptococcal disease of newborn with acute puerperal polyarthritis of mother due to infectious allergy (author's transl)].

Reported in this paper is a lethal B-streptococcal disease of a newborns which grew manifest as meningitis. It had been caused by Type Ic B-streptococci. The same pathogen was isolated from the mother's vaginal secretion.

[Breast feeding under different nutritional and nursing conditions. Analysis of 644 newborn infants, 1979-1981].

The effects of different nutritional patterns and nursing conditions on the form of newborn feeding were retrospectively analysed. A comparison was made of 644 infants born between 1979 and 1981. Feeding in 1979 was based on a regime adapted from Kellner.

[Results of gonadotropin therapy in hypogonadotropic anovulation].

Combined FSH and HCG treatment was applied to patients in whom anovulation had been found to be the cause of sterility. Results were separately evaluated for patients in normal gonadotrophic conditions, on the one hand, and those in hypogonadotrophic conditions, on the other. They were compared with findings obtained from other groups between which no distinction had been possible due to the use of earlier methods for gonadotrophin determination.
