The number of elderly people with cancer will increase within the next decades. Cancer will surpass cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause of death. In comparison to younger patients elderly patients with cancer are less often treated within the scope of clinical trials.

Identifying gene-specific variations in biomedical text.

The influence of genetic variations on diseases or cellular processes is the main focus of many investigations, and results of biomedical studies are often only accessible through scientific publications. Automatic extraction of this information requires recognition of the gene names and the accompanying allelic variant information. In a previous work, the OSIRIS system for the detection of allelic variation in text based on a query expansion approach was communicated.

Characterization of NKIP: a novel, Na+/K+-ATPase interacting protein mediates neural differentiation and apoptosis.

Cellular differentiation and programmed cell death are tightly controlled to maintain tissue homeostasis and proper organ function. In a screen for apoptosis specific gene products, we isolated an immediate early apoptosis response gene from myelomonocytic stem cells that appears to play a key regulatory role in a number of cell types and may be of particular importance in cells of the central nervous system. The gene's 28 kDa protein product interacts with the C-terminal ectodomain of the Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) beta 1 subunit and was therefore named NKIP (NKA Interacting Protein).

Business owners' action planning and its relationship to business success in three African countries.

A model of business success was developed with motivational resources (locus of control, self-efficacy, achievement motivation, and self-reported personal initiative) and cognitive resources (cognitive ability and human capital) as independent variables, business owners' elaborate and proactive planning as a mediator, and business size and growth as dependent variables. Three studies with a total of 408 African micro and small-scale business owners were conducted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Structural equation analyses partially supported the hypotheses on the importance of psychological planning by the business owners.

Reconstruction of chemical molecules from images.

We have developed a system for the automatic reconstruction of chemical molecules from images. The system takes as input an electronically produced image of a chemical molecule and produces an SDF file containing the complete chemical description of the molecule. The SDF file can then be read and used by most chemical computer programs.

Meta-analysis: effect of monotherapy and combination therapy with inhibitors of the renin angiotensin system on proteinuria in renal disease.

Background: Reduction of proteinuria is associated with delayed progression of chronic kidney disease. Reports suggest that angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) reduce proteinuria, but results are variable. The relative effect of ARBs and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and their combined administration, remains uncertain.

Activation of the heterodimeric central complex SoxYZ of chemotrophic sulfur oxidation is linked to a conformational change and SoxY-Y interprotein disulfide formation.

The central protein of the four component sulfur oxidizing (Sox) enzyme system of Paracoccus pantotrophus, SoxYZ, carries at the SoxY subunit the covalently bound sulfur substrate which the other three proteins bind, oxidize, and release as sulfate. SoxYZ of different preparations resulted in different specific thiosulfate-oxidizing activities of the reconstituted Sox enzyme system. From these preparations SoxYZ was activated up to 24-fold by different reductants with disodium sulfide being the most effective and yielded a uniform specific activity of the Sox system.

Efficacy of intracardiac right ventricular microaxial pump support during beating heart surgery.

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new developed intracardiac right ventricular microaxial pump (elect 300, Impella AG, Aachen) the intracardiac pump (IRVP) was applied to patients undergoing beating heart coronary surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first description of an intracardiac microaxial pump device inserted through the pulmonary artery into the right ventricle. Six patients undergoing coronary surgery for 3-vessel disease were operated on without extracorporeal circulation with the new IRVP device.

Determination of slow-tonic MyHC immunoreactivity is an important step in the evaluation of muscle spindles in porcine extraocular muscles.

We have tested our hypothesis suggesting (i) that for the reliable determination and counting of muscle spindles (Msp) at the light microscopy level in extraocular muscles (EOM), analysis of the spindle specific myosin heavy chain (MyHC) immunoreactivity of intrafusal fibers, especially after staining with anti-slow-tonic MyHC antibodies, is the most convenient tool, (ii) that the number of Msp determined by the slow-tonic MyHC immunoreactivity of intrafusal fibers in EOM is much lower than that based on histological examination and (iii) that the previously reported numbers of Msp based on histological examination of EOM could be overestimated. In order to determine the number and distribution of Msp and to analyze the MyHC isoform immunoreactivity of intrafusal fibers in porcine EOM, paraffin sections of three 9-month-old pig medial (MR) and lateral rectus (LR), levator palpebrae (LP) and retractor bulbi (RB) muscles were stained histologically or using specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against MyHC isoforms. Msp in recti and LP muscles studied by immunocytochemistry contained nuclear bag (NB) fiber(s) reacting with mAbs against slow-tonic, slow-twitch, alpha-cardiac and neonatal MyHCs, but not with the mAb against fast-twitch MyHC, which, on the contrary, stained nuclear chain (NC) fibers.

Utilizing event-related brain potentials (ERPs), we tested the neural correlates of speech recognition by presenting sentences that ended with incomplete words, such as To light up the dark she needed her can-. Immediately following the incomplete words, subjects saw visual words that (i) matched form and meaning, such as candle; (ii) matched meaning but not form, such as lantern; (iii) matched form but not meaning, such as candy; or (iv) mismatched form and meaning, such as number.

The significance of the soxS gene product on chemotrophic sulfur oxidation of Paracoccus pantotrophus was investigated. The thioredoxin SoxS was purified, and the N-terminal amino acid sequence identified SoxS as the soxS gene product. Background: Arterial augmentation (AP) and the augmentation index (Aix) are surrogate parameters of arterial stiffness and are commonly used as predictors for cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study is to compare these parameters in diabetic subjects and nondiabetic cardiovascular risk subjects with healthy control subjects.

Characterization of a cyanobacterial-like uptake [NiFe] hydrogenase: EPR and FTIR spectroscopic studies of the enzyme from Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier transform IR studies on the soluble hydrogenase from Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans are presented. In addition, detailed sequence analyses of the two subunits of the enzyme have been performed. They show that the enzyme belongs to a group of uptake [NiFe] hydrogenases typical for Cyanobacteria.

Not every pseudoword disrupts word recognition: an ERP study.

Background: If all available acoustic phonetic information of words is used during lexical access and consequently stored in the mental lexicon, then all pseudowords that deviate in a single acoustic feature from a word should hamper word recognition. By contrast, models assuming underspecification of redundant phonological information in the mental lexicon predict a differential disruption of word recognition dependent on the phonological structure of the pseudoword. Using neurophysiological measures, the present study tested the predicted asymmetric disruption by assuming that coronal place of articulation for consonants is redundant.

In silico prediction of clinical efficacy.

Drug development is a high risk and costly process, and the ability to predict clinical efficacy in silico (in a computer) can save the pharmaceutical industry time and resources. Additionally, such an approach will result in more targeted, personalized therapies. To date, a number of in silico strategies have been developed to provide better information about the human response to novel therapies earlier in the drug development process.

Multi-detector CT in the evaluation of patients with recurrence of rectal cancer.

The advantages of multiplanar reconstruction in rectal cancer recurrence diagnostics using medium resolution multi-detector CT are evaluated. We included 40 patients after a rectal cancer operation in this study. During follow-up ten patients developed a recurrence.

Podocytes are sensitive to fluid shear stress in vitro.

Podocytes are exposed to mechanical forces arising from glomerular capillary pressure and filtration. It has been shown that stretch affects podocyte biology in vitro and plays a significant role in the development of glomerulosclerosis in vivo. However, whether podocytes are sensitive to fluid shear stress is completely unknown.

The flavoprotein SoxF functions in chemotrophic thiosulfate oxidation of Paracoccus pantotrophus in vivo and in vitro.

Paracoccus pantotrophus strain GBsoxFDelta carries a deletion in the soxF gene that inactivates flavoprotein SoxF-sulfide dehydrogenase. This strain grew with thiosulfate slower than the wild type. GBsoxFDelta cells oxidized thiosulfate at a rate of 40% and hydrogen sulfide at a rate of 45% of the wild type.

Impact of environmental temperature on skin thickness and microvascular blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes.

Background: Glucose measurement from different skin areas might be influenced by changes in skin texture due to several environmental confounders. Our study was performed to investigate the effect of changes in ambient temperature on skin thickness and microvascular skin blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes at the lower forearm.

Methods: Thirteen subjects with diabetes and seven without diabetes participated in the study.

Experimental stroke: ischaemic lesion volume and oedema formation differ among rat strains (a comparison between Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats using MRI).

Investigating focal cerebral ischaemia requires animal models that are relevant to human stroke. This study was designed to evaluate the influence of early reperfusion and choice of rat strains on infarct volume and oedema formation. Thirty-six Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to temporary middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 90 min (groups I and II) or to permanent MCAO (groups III and IV) using the suture technique.
