Porous boron nitrides possess beneficial properties such as high thermal and chemical stability which are critical for applications in adsorption processes. In order to assess possible fields of applications, trace-level adsorption isotherms of different hydrocarbons on two synthesized porous boron nitrides and two commercial activated carbons are compared. By normalizing the adsorptive loadings on the micropore surface area, superior adsorption performances of the BN materials on polar and aromatic adsorptives with up to 50% higher loadings compared to the activated carbons can be shown.

A new Knudsen effusion apparatus employing a magnetic suspension balance (MSB) to measure low vapor pressures <1 Pa is presented. The intention of the work is developing a method for measuring vapor pressures that covers a wider range of pressure than established procedures do. A cooled condensation plate is used to collect a large fraction of effused molecules which have left a Knudsen cell.

The CO(2) uptake on nanoscale AlO(OH) hollow spheres (260 mg g(-1)) as a new material is comparable to that on many metal-organic frameworks although their specific surface area is much lower (530 m(2) g(¬1)versus 1500-6000 m(2) g(¬1)). Suited temperature-pressure cycles allow for reversible storage and separation of CO(2) while the CO(2) uptake is 4.3-times higher as compared to N(2).

A new tool (Infrasorb-12) for the screening of porosity is described, identifying high surface area materials in a very short time with high accuracy. Further, an example for the application of the tool in the discovery of new cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks is given.
