The cmk gene encoding cytidine monophosphate kinase is located in the rpsA operon and is required for normal replication rate in Escherichia coli.

A gene encoding a polypeptide of 25 kDa is located immediately upstream of the gene for ribosomal protein S1, rpsA. In high gene copy number, this gene, mssA, was previously found to suppress defects in smbA, which is now known to be identical to pyrH, encoding UMP kinase. We show here that the 25-kDa polypeptide comprises CMP kinase and propose that the gene be designated cmk.

Pain relief after dental impaction surgery using ketorolac, hydrocodone plus acetaminophen, or placebo.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 207 patients with moderate pain after surgical removal of impacted third molars were randomly assigned to receive a single oral dose of 10 mg of ketorolac tromethamine, 10 mg of hydrocodone plus 1000 mg of acetaminophen, or placebo. Analgesic effect as assessed by summed pain intensity difference at 3 and 6 hours was significantly (P < or = 0.01) greater after ketorolac than after hydrocodone/acetaminophen.

Light-scattering investigations of thermochromic gels.

We investigate the optical switching behavior of thermochromic layers, i.e., their spectral directionalhemispherical transmission and reflection as a function of temperature.

Comparison of the efficacy and safety of ketorolac and meperidine in the relief of dental pain.

A single-dose, randomized, double-blind study of parallel design was conducted to determine the analgesic efficacy and safety of ketorolac tromethamine in patients who experience moderate or severe pain after the surgical removal of three or more third molars, one of which was a bony-impacted mandibular molar. Meperidine hydrochloride was used as the control analgesic. In this 8-hour study, assessments were made of pain intensity, pain relief, and overall rating of the medication in 145 patients, each of whom had received an intramuscular injection of 10 mg, 30 mg, or 90 mg of ketorolac, or 50 mg or 100 mg of meperidine.

Thermal conductivity of monolithic organic aerogels.

The total thermal conductivity lambda of resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogel monoliths has been measured as a function of density rho in the range from rho = 80 to 300 kilograms per cubic meter. A record-low conductivity value in air at 300 K of lambda approximately 0.012 watt per meter per kelvin was found for rho approximately 157 kilograms per cubic meter.

Asthenopia: frequency and objective findings.

Fifty young adults were interviewed about the asthenopic symptoms experienced in the preceding 6 months by means of a questionnaire; they then underwent ophthalmic investigation. We established the frequency of occurrence of single asthenopic symptoms and looked for their prevalence in subgroups determined by objective findings such as phorias, different accommodation widths, different fusional vergence widths, and others. The frequencies of single complaints were: headache 42/50 (84%), ocular pain 17/50 (34%), foreign body sensation 25/50 (50%), red eyes 22/50 (44%), photophobia 24/50 (48%), double vision 5/50 (10%), difficulties when changing fixation distance 21/50 (42%).

Deletion mapping of 39 random isolated Y-chromosome DNA fragments.

Thirty-nine recombinants isolated from a Y chromosome-specific library were deletion mapped. Seven deletion intervals were defined by hybridization of probes to DNA of eight individuals with aberrant Y chromosomes. Extreme cytogenetic limits of the deletion intervals were determined by in situ hybridization of one probe per deletion interval.

Experiments in surgical voice restoration using valve prostheses.

As our experience with 132 laryngectomees shows, the quality of tracheopharyngeal speech differs. Effortless tracheo-pharyngeal speech requires low flow resistance. Testing the individual factors that influence flow resistance and which are due to the prosthesis, we found that prosthesis diameter and slit length were most important.
