Botulinum toxin (BTX) injection is a common treatment for bruxism, but there is no literature on potential salivary gland complications. This paper presents a case of acute parotitis in a 60-year-old female following BTX injections to the masseter muscle. This case highlights the possible salivary gland complications after injection of BTX into the masticatory muscles.

Background And Objectives: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) serves as cardiopulmonary therapy in critically ill patients with respiratory/heart failure and often necessitates multiple blood product transfusions. The administration of platelet transfusions during ECMO is triggered by the presence or risk of significant bleeding. Most paediatric ECMO programmes follow guidelines that recommend a platelet transfusion threshold of 80-100 × 10/L.

Background: Ventricular assist devices (VADs) play a critical and increasing role in treating end-stage heart failure in pediatric patients. A growing number of patients are supported by VADs as a bridge to heart transplantation. Experience with VADs in the pediatric population is limited, and experience in Israel has not been published.

Background: Some patients with pulmonary stenosis present with a complex multilevel disease that involves the valve, the leaflets, and the sinotubular junction (STJ) forming an hourglass appearance. We herein report the mid-term results of our experience with the reconstruction of the supravalvar narrowing using three pericardial patches.

Material And Methods: Retrospective analysis of patient charts and echocardiography studies of patients who underwent three-patch reconstruction of the pulmonary valve (PV) from 2013 to 2022.

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) are increasingly being used among the pediatric population for indications of both primary and secondary prevention. There is limited long-term data on the outcomes of pediatric patients following ICD implantation. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of this population, burden of appropriate and inappropriate shock and complication rate in a large tertiary pediatric medical center.

Objective: Routine use of central venous access is needed in children undergoing open heart surgery for pressure monitoring and inotrope infusion. We sought to evaluate the efficiency and safety of routine use of transthoracic intracardiac lines (ICLs) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery and to compare them to patients who have been previously treated with traditional central venous lines (non-ICLs).

Methods: Retrospective review of charts of all patients who underwent cardiac surgery and had an ICL inserted in the operating room.

: Peri-implantitis is a common finding among patients with dental implants. There is no consensus regarding the treatment of this disease, but in many cases, surgical treatment is common practice. A histopathological analysis is not an integral part of suggested protocols.

Rheumatic fever (RF) is an autoinflammatory disease that is caused by the host response to an infection with group A β-hemolytic streptococcus. In this case report we describe a 15 years old boy with Down syndrome who had unusual presentation of acute rheumatic fever with a fulminant multisystemic which included heart failure secondary to pancarditis and adult respiratory distress syndrome. The final diagnosis was confirmed after cardiac biopsy that was performed during valve replacement surgery and demonstrated Aschoff bodies - a pathognomonic finding in acute rheumatic fever.

This is the first published case, as far as we know, of a term neonate with refractory chylothorax secondary to diastolic dysfunction in the cardiac postoperative period, where extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was used to improve the physiologic derangements, thus allowing resolution of the chylous effusion. The infant was prenatally diagnosed with d-transposition of the great arteries. He was started on prostaglandin infusion and underwent balloon atrial septostomy followed by arterial switch operation.

Objectives: It is believed that management of neonates with dextro-transposition of the great arteries is constantly improving. Renal function may play a role in the prognosis of patients after congenital heart surgery. The aim of this study was to describe the outcome of neonates who underwent arterial switch operation during the past 2 decades using renal function as a surrogate marker for morbidity and mortality.

We sought to examine the role of preoperative and 2nd postoperative day albumin levels as predictors for postoperative course in infants undergoing repair of congenital heart disease. This retrospective, single-center, observational study comprised consecutive infants younger than 1 year who had undergone repair of tetralogy of Fallot, ventricular septal defect, complete atrioventricular canal or transposition of the great arteries over a 25 months period. We correlated preoperative and postoperative day (POD) #2 albumin level to vaso-inotropic score (VIS) and intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) as markers for degree and duration of postoperative cardiac support.

The shortage of dedicated pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centers and the expanding indications for pediatric ECMO necessitate a regional program for transport of ECMO-supported patients. Data about feasibly and safety of pediatric ECMO transport are scarce. Our aim is to describe our experience with a pediatric ECMO reach-out program and review pertinent literature.

Objectives: Fontan surgery, the final surgical stage in single ventricle palliation, redirects systemic venous blood into the pulmonary circulation for gas exchange. A decrease in pulmonary blood flow can lead to major complications and grave outcomes. Alveolar dead-space fraction represents the portion of inhaled air that does not participate in gas exchange and hence quantifies ventilation-perfusion abnormalities in the lung.

Objectives: Vacuum-assisted closure is being increasingly used to treat deep sternal wound infection following cardiac surgery, but most of the data refer to adults. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of vacuum-assisted closure in pediatric patients.

Design: Retrospective file review.

Mixing in many body systems is intuitively understood as the change in time of the set of neighbors surrounding each particle. Its rate and its development over time hold important clues to the behavior of many body systems. For example, gas particles constantly change their position and surrounding particles, while in solids one expects the motion of the atoms to be limited by a fixed set of neighboring atoms.

Purpose: To compare short- and long-term quality of life (QOL) scores in patients undergoing mandibular resection and reconstruction.

Materials And Methods: All the patients who underwent resection and reconstruction of the mandible between 2000 and 2015 at a large tertiary center were retrospectively reviewed. Their QOL was measured by the University of Washington QOL questionnaire.

The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that impact the quality of life (QOL) scores of patients undergoing mandibulectomy. All patients with a diagnosis of an oral cavity neoplasm involving the mandible who underwent a mandibulectomy between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2015 and completed a University of Washington QOL questionnaire (UW-QOL) were included in the study. Fifty-eight patients fulfilled all inclusion criteria and completed the UW-QOL questionnaire.

Infective endocarditis (IE) in the pediatric population can present as a life-threatening condition. Optimal timing for surgical intervention should consider surgical risks versus the risk of neurologic complications. We herein report our experience with this group of critically ill children.

Purpose: Preclinical studies performed in our laboratory have shown that high-dose selenium inhibits the development of carboplatin drug resistance in an ovarian cancer mouse xenograft model. Based on these data, as well as the potential serious toxicities of supranutritional doses of selenium, a phase I trial of a combination of selenium/carboplatin/paclitaxel was designed to determine the maximum tolerated dose, safety, and effects of selenium on carboplatin pharmacokinetics in the treatment of chemo-naive women with gynecologic cancers. Correlative studies were performed to identify gene targets of selenium.

Background/aim: We have been exploring a prevention approach to the problem of drug resistance which develops during ovarian cancer chemotherapy. We have previously described an in vivo model of the development of resistance to the chemotherapy drug cisplatin in xenografts, and the prevention of this resistance by selenium compounds. However, a different platinum-based drug, carboplatin, is frequently utilized in ovarian cancer treatment.
