Background: As the COVID-19 pandemic moves into the survivorship phase, questions regarding long-term lung damage remain unanswered. Previous histopathologic studies are limited to autopsy reports. We studied lung specimens from COVID-19 survivors who underwent elective lung resections to determine whether postacute histopathologic changes are present.

Aims: To share the need for agreement in terminology around how people are supported to receive dental care.

Method: In this position paper, we make the case for a shift in behavior support in dentistry from an art to a science.

Results: We outline why we need agreement on the definition of behavior support across dentistry, agreement on underlying theory, aims and values, and why we need agreement on terms for specific techniques.

The National Institutes of Health hosted a workshop in 2019 to build consensus around the current state of understanding of the pathophysiology of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and to identify knowledge gaps that must be addressed to enhance clinical care of POTS patients through research. This second (of two) articles summarizes current knowledge gaps, and outlines the clinical and research priorities for POTS. POTS is a complex, multi-system, chronic disorder of the autonomic nervous system characterized by orthostatic intolerance and orthostatic tachycardia without hypotension.

Study Objectives: To define the clinical implications of cutaneous phosphorylated α-synuclein (p-syn) and its association with subjective and objective measures of autonomic impairment and clinical features including antidepressant use in isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD).

Methods: Twenty-five iRBD patients had quantified neurological and cognitive examinations, olfactory testing, questionnaires, autonomic function testing, and 3 punch skin biopsies (distal thigh, proximal thigh, neck). Skin biopsies were stained for the pan-axonal marker PGP 9.

Background And Purpose: The Boston Autonomic Symptom Questionnaire (BASQ) is a quantitative tool using a numeric rating scale to assess the symptoms of systemic dysautonomia, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urinary, sudomotor, vasomotor, and sexual functions. The aim of this study was to validate the Korean version of the BASQ (KBASQ).

Methods: Prospectively enrolled subjects who submitted to autonomic function tests, including tests for cardiovagal, adrenergic, and sudomotor functions, also completed the KBASQ and the Korean version of the Orthostatic Grading Scale (KOGS), a validated questionnaire or assessing orthostatic symptoms.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a chronic and often disabling disorder characterized by orthostatic intolerance with excessive heart rate increase without hypotension during upright posture. Patients often experience a constellation of other typical symptoms including fatigue, exercise intolerance and gastrointestinal distress. A typical patient with POTS is a female of child-bearing age, who often first displays symptoms in adolescence.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how small populations can get trapped in an "extinction vortex," where biotic (living things) and abiotic (non-living factors) elements work together to push species toward extinction, particularly focusing on vertebrate populations.
  • Researchers analyzed 35 vertebrate populations, comprising 32 species, over a decade, investigating how adult body size impacts the dynamics of population decline, specifically looking at time to extinction and growth rates.
  • Findings indicate that smaller species are more vulnerable to extinction, experiencing greater declines and variability in growth rates compared to larger species, emphasizing the need for management efforts that prioritize the conservation of smaller-bodied populations.

Background: Continuity of care (CoC) is integral to the practice of comprehensive primary care, yet research in the area of CoC training in residency programs is limited. In light of distributed medical education and evolving accreditation standards, a rigorous understanding of the context and enablers contributing to CoC education must be considered in the design and delivery of residency training programs.

Approach: At our preceptor-based community academic site, we developed a system-resident-preceptor (SRP) framework to explore factors that influence a resident's perception regarding CoC, and established variables in each area to enhance learning.

The aim of this study was to explore communication interactions and identify phases adopted by dental professionals with parents and their young children and to examine the hypothesis that successful social talking between the actors together with the containment of worries allows the formation of a triadic treatment alliance, which leads to achieving preventive dental treatment goals. Conversation analysis of the transcribed data from video recordings of dental professionals, parents and preschool children when attending for preventive dental care was conducted. The transcriptions were read, examined and analysed independently to ensure the trustworthiness of the analysis.

Aim: To identify the directions, strength and associations between dental anxiety, COHRQoL and self-esteem in children and adolescents.

Basic Research Design: PRISMA guidelines were followed and the review registered (PROSPERO CRD42019140037). MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Science Direct, CINAHL, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), Grey Literature Report, and British Library EThOS using MeSH terms and keywords were searched.

Dental enamel forms extracellularly as thin ribbons of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) that initiate on dentin mineral in close proximity to the ameloblast distal membrane. Secreted proteins are critical for this process. Enam and Ambn mice fail to form enamel.

Pollinating species are in decline globally, with land use an important driver. However, most of the evidence on which these claims are made is patchy, based on studies with low taxonomic and geographic representativeness. Here, we model the effect of land-use type and intensity on global pollinator biodiversity, using a local-scale database covering 303 studies, 12,170 sites, and 4502 pollinating species.

Problem Being Addressed: Medical schools aim to integrate the values of generalism into their undergraduate programs. However, currently no program has been described to measure the degree to which formal curricular materials represent generalist principles.

Objective Of Program: To quantify the generalism principles present in undergraduate medical education learning materials and to provide recommendations to enhance generalism content.

Introduction: Early childhood vaccination rates are lower in rural areas than those in urban areas of the U.S. This study's objective is to quantify vaccine timeliness and the prevalence of undervaccination patterns in Montana and to measure the associations between timeliness and series completion by age 24 months.

Objective: Obesity is associated with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Disease severity is associated with a higher COVID-19 antibody titer. The COVID-19 antibody titer response of patients with obesity versus patients without obesity was compared.

Article Synopsis
  • - The native extracellular matrix influences cell behavior by dynamically displaying signals, making it crucial to mimic this environment for studying cell-matrix interactions.
  • - Researchers developed a synthetic platform using coiled-coil peptides to control the temporal display of cell-adhesive signals, enabling them to manipulate how ligands interact with cells.
  • - By varying the timing and exposure of RGDS ligands, the study found that fibroblast cells could reversibly spread and contract, indicating a stronger response to dynamic signals compared to constant signals, which could help in programming cellular behavior.

Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of opioid analgesics for the treatment of acute and chronic pain conditions, and for some patients, these medications may be the only effective treatment available. Unfortunately, opioid analgesics are also associated with major risks (eg, opioid use disorder) and adverse outcomes (eg, respiratory depression and falls). The risks and adverse outcomes associated with opioid analgesics have prompted efforts to reduce their use in the treatment of both acute and chronic pain.

Background: A feasibility study was conducted to implement the Talk, Instruct, Practice, Plan and Support (TIPPS) intervention for pregnant women to enhance infant birth weight in a conflict area in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). The decision tool, A process for Decision-making after Pilot and feasibility Trials (ADePT), examines the methodological factors identified in a feasibility study, that may require modification for a full trial. Thus, this study aimed to use the ADePT decision tool to evaluate if the feasibility study had achieved its objectives and to identify the need for intervention, clinical context and trial design modification.
