Collagenous colitis is an inflammatory mucosal disorder of the colon with distinctive histopathological features, including a thickened subepithelial collagen layer. The clinical course is usually benign, but serious complications, including death, may occur. In the present report, a 69-year-old woman with watery diarrhea and collagenous colitis developed bloody diarrhea that was refractory to treatment medications, including corticosteroids and azathioprine.

This study evaluated laterality in scratching by chimpanzees (n = 89) during socially arousing circumstances. Hand use and the side of the body scratched was recorded during a baseline and experimental condition. This paper reviews recent studies on the role of Nnt (nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase) in insulin secretion and detoxification of ROS (reactive oxygen species). Glucose-stimulated insulin release from pancreatic beta-cells is mediated by increased metabolism. This elevates intracellular [ATP], thereby closing KATP channels (ATP-sensitive potassium channels) and producing membrane depolarization, activation of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels, Ca2+ influx and, consequently, insulin secretion.

Chimpanzees appear to understand something about the attentional states of others; in the present experiment, we investigated whether they understand that the attentional state of a human is based on eye gaze. In all, 116 adult chimpanzees were offered food by an experimenter who engaged in one of the four experimental manipulations: eyes closed, eyes open, hand over eyes, and hand over mouth. The communicative behavior of the chimpanzees was observed.

The C57BL/6J mouse displays glucose intolerance and reduced insulin secretion. The genetic locus underlying this phenotype was mapped to nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt) on mouse chromosome 13, a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial protein involved in beta-cell mitochondrial metabolism. C57BL/6J mice have a naturally occurring in-frame five-exon deletion in Nnt that removes exons 7-11.

As part of a continuing study aimed at establishing structure-activity relationships and heuristic principles useful for the design of non-genotoxic azo dyes, a series of new direct dyes based on two non-mutagenic benzidine analogs, 2,2'-dimethyl-5,5'-dipropoxybenzidine and 3,3'-dipropoxybenzidine, were evaluated for mutagenic activity in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100. These strains are widely used for mutagenicity screening and have been shown to detect the mutagenic activity of benzidine analogs. While some toxicity was seen with some dyes at high doses, all of the dyes examined were judged non-mutagenic with and without metabolic activation in the standard Salmonella plate-incorporation assay.

Humans throw right-handed, and it has been suggested that the neurophysiological demands of aimed throwing may have served as a precursor to the evolution of left hemisphere specialization for linguistic functions. Although there are descriptions of throwing by wild and captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), systematic observations of aimed throwing and handedness have not been reported. In this article, evidence of population-level right-handedness for throwing is reported in 2 samples of captive chimpanzees.

The effect of metal substitution on the activity and structure of the aminopeptidase P (APPro) from Escherichia coli has been investigated. Measurements of activity in the presence of Mn2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Na+, and Ca2+ show that significant activity is seen only in the Mn-bound form of the enzyme. The addition of Zn2+ to [MnMn(APPro)] is strongly inhibitory.

Molecular wires comprising a Ru(II)- or Re(I)-complex head group, an aromatic tail group, and an alkane linker reversibly inhibit the activity of the copper amine oxidase from Arthrobacter globiformis (AGAO), with K(i) values between 6 muM and 37 nM. In the crystal structure of a Ru(II)-wire:AGAO conjugate, the wire occupies the AGAO active-site substrate access channel, the trihydroxyphenylalanine quinone cofactor is ordered in the "off-Cu" position with its reactive carbonyl oriented toward the inhibitor, and the "gate" residue, Tyr-296, is in the "open" position. Head groups, tail-group substituents, and linker lengths all influence wire-binding interactions with the enzyme.
