Structural studies of the protein portion of the H-2-linked Ia glycoprotein antigens of the mouse: tryptic peptide comparison of products from the I-A and I-C subregions of B10-HTT.

Ia antigens from the I-A8 and I-Ck subregions of the B10.HTT (H-2t3) strain of mice were isolated by indirect immunoprecipitation of arginine-labeled, nonionic detergent-solubilized materials. After biochemical purification the electrophoretically homogeneous 28,000 dalton glycoprotein beta chains from the Ia precipitates were digested with trypsin and the resultant radiolabeled tryptic peptides were compared by analytical ion exchange chromatography.

Massive colonic variceal bleeding secondary to abnormal splenocolic collaterals: report of a case.

Even in the absence of demonstrable esophagogastric varices in the cirrhotic patient, a diagnosis of variceal bleeding from unusual sites should be entertained in the differential diagnosis of massive lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The varices may reflect the increased pressure in the superior or inferior mesenteric systems or in the splenic system through abnormal splenocolic anastomoses. This case has the unique feature of bleeding from varices interposed between the splenic and inferior mesenteric venous systems, as opposed to the previously described cases of varices draining directly into a portosystemic conduit.

Immediate revascularization of the popliteal artery and vein: report of a case.

A case demonstrating the successful use of Silastic shunts for immediate limb revascularization is presented. Temporary limb revascularization may reduce the rate of amputation in combined popliteal vessel injuries. A major cause of limb loss is delay between injury and revascularization, including transport time and time spent dealing with other injuries.

Similarity of the carbohydrate structures of H-2 and Ia glycoproteins.

The glycopeptides produced by pronase digestion of two H-2K, two H-2D, and three Ia glycoprotein antigens were examined for size and charge. The glycopeptides derived from all of the antigens examined were found to have m.w.

The private specificity H-2.4 and the public specificity H-2.28 of the D region are expressed on two independent polypeptide chains.

The antigenic specificities H-2.4 (private) and H-2.28 (public) in the H-2a haplotype are controlled by the D region of H-2 as defined by the available recombinants.

Control of lumbar arterial bleeding during aortic aneurysm surgery.

Lumbar backbleeding from an opened aortic aneurysm may be very troublesome. Suturing of these ostia is occasionally difficult because of an unyielding calcified vessel wall. We describe a new technique utilizing warm bone wax to occlude these ostia.

Mapping of the genetic control of murine response to low doses of the dinitrophenyl conjugates of ovomucoid and bovine gamma-globulin.

The antibody responses in mice to low doses of the DNP-conjugates of ovomucoid (OM) and bovine gamma-globulin (BGG) were measured for a number of inbred strains carrying independent and recombinant H-2 haplotypes. This permitted mapping the gene(s) controlling the response to low doses of OM (Ir-1-OM) within the I-A subregion of the H-2 complex. Similarly, it was possible to map the primary gene(s) controlling the response to low doses of BGG (Ir-1-BGG) within the I-A and/or I-B subregions.

Primary torsion of the greater omentum mimicking duodenal ulcer.

The diagnosis of primary torsion of the omentum is a diagnostic enigma and is made almost exclusively at laparotomy. The difficulty is enhanced when the patient has a chronic problem mimicking a specific entity, e.g.

Selective isolation of reversible cold sensitive variants from Chinese hamster ovary cell cultures.

Variants of the Chinese hamster ovary cell line CHO-KI (ATTCCCL61)which grow almost normally at 38.5C but very poorly or not at all at 30C were obtained after treatment with mutagens and application of an indirect selection procedure. Two kinds of variants were recovered.

Amino acid sequence studies on the branched, synthetic polypeptide antigens of the immune response- 1 gene system.

Three immunogens with side chains of random amino acid sequence, poly (L Phe, l glu)-poly (DL Ala)--poly (L Lys) [(Phe, G)-A--L 223], poly (L Tyr, L Glu)-poly (DL Ala)--poly (L Lys) [(T, G)-A--L 509] and (T, G)-A-L 52, as well as two immunogens with side chains of defined amino acid sequences, GGT-A--L and TG-A--L, were sequenced using a Beckman automated sequenator. Despite the lack of a unique amino acid sequence for the amino terminus, reasonable results for the sequence studies were obtained using the Edman reaction. GGT-A--L and TG-A--L had 70% and 80% of their side chains respectively, with the desired sequence.

Dental health: what is being taught to college students.

An analysis of the dental health material in all college-level, health education textbooks published between 1966 and 1973 showed a deficiency in the amount, the thoroughness, and the quality of the dental health information given. Realibility of information from one source to another is low, and some information is inaccurate. On the basis of information in these textbooks, serious questions are raised concerning the adequacy of dental health education in college-level health education courses.

Localization of the papain cleavage site of H-2 glycoproteins.

The antigenic products of the murine H-2K and H-2D genes are glycoproteins of about 45,000 molecular weight which are tightly integrated within the cell surface membrane. A glycoprotein fragment (FAg, antigenic fragment) of 37,000 daltons carrying the carbohydrate, antigenic sites, and the associated putative beta2-microglobulin of 12,000 daltons can be generated by papain cleavage either of the native molecules in the cell membrane or of immune precipitates made from the antigen solubilized by nonionic detergent. Partial NH2-terminal sequence analyses of the native H-2 glycoprotein and of the papain-cleaved glycoprotein fragment establish that the fragment is, in fact, the NH2-terminal portion of the native molecule.

Educational value of a university-sponsored community dental clinic: a three year student evaluation.

The overall assessment of the clinic experience by the students was positive. Response to the open-ended questions showed that a number of students took pride in the Venice clinic and that they gained a great deal of personal and professional satisfaction from being able to provide service to people in a low-income and minority community. Almost 90% stated that their understanding of health problems of the poor was improved; 75% felt that their ability to relate to patients from different backgrounds was broadened; and 45% expressed more willingness to practice in a low-income area.

Quantitative separation of antigen-specific murine antibodies by anti-allotype chromatography.

The use of Sepharose-conjugated murine anti-Iga or anti-Igb allo-antisera allowed the quantitative separation of immunoglobulins of the two allotypes. After fractionation of mixtures of anti-(T,G)-A--L antisera obtained from congenic strains differing in immunoglobulin allotype, it was possible to measure the antigen-binding capacity of specific anti-(T,G)-A--L antibodies in each allotype fraction. Analysis of artificial mixtures of immune sera obtained from homozygous Iga and Igb animals showed that this method is quantitative and internally consistent.
