To understand long-term impacts of steel slag material on aquifer geochemistry and microbial communities, we conducted four sampling campaigns in the Gier alluvial groundwater (Loire, France). In its northern part, the aquifer flows under a 200,000 m steel slag exhibiting high levels of chromium and molybdenum. Geochemical analyses of the water table revealed the existence of water masses with different chemical signatures.

The effects of regional (hydrogeology and geomorphology) and local (sediment and hydrology) characteristics on hyporheic assemblages were studied along a 40-km reach of a large gravel-bed river. Hyporheic water and fauna were sampled at the upstream and downstream positions of 15 large gravel bars. The resulting 30 stations varied in their sediment grain size, stability and direction of river-aquifer exchanges.

Because of their high content in toxic metals, steel slag dumps are potential threats for the environment and public health. Among management methods that could mitigate their hazard, aided-phytostabilization is a relevant, though challenging, option. Indeed, steel slags are very unfavorable for plant growth, due to metal toxicity and very alkaline pH (>10).

Heterogeneity of hyporheic fauna is associated with geomorphological features and related vertical water exchanges. Constrictions on river floodplain are known to induce groundwater inputs and increase stygobite fauna. Two floodplain constrictions were studied in a large braided river (the Drôme River): one linked to a natural process (valley narrowing), another to an artificial river regulation (early 20th embankment).

Future climate changes and the resulting modifications in anthropogenic activities will alter the interactions between rivers and groundwater. The quantification of these hydraulic interactions is absolutely necessary for achieving sustainable water use and requires accurate analytical methodologies. This report proposes an interdisciplinary approach to the quantitative and qualitative characterization of hydraulic interactions between rivers and shallow aquifers, wherein it outlines the advantages of coupling groundwater modeling with biological markers.
