: Frostbite is a freezing injury that can lead to amputation. Current treatments include tissue rewarming followed by thrombolytic or vasodilators. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy might decrease the rate of amputation by increasing cellular oxygen availability to the damaged tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • The International Hypothermia Registry (IHR) was set up to learn more about accidental hypothermia and how to treat people who get it.
  • The study looked at 201 hypothermic patients, focusing on those who had heart problems and those who didn't, finding that many were young men involved in mountain accidents.
  • The results showed a high survival rate for patients who were still alive when help arrived, while outcomes were lower for those who had heart arrests, with some factors helping predict who would survive better.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the impact of helicopter vs. ground ambulance transport on mortality rates for major trauma patients in the Northern French Alps from 2009 to 2017.
  • Helicopter transport was linked to lower in-hospital death rates and reduced instances of undertriage, indicating it might lead to better outcomes for severely injured patients.
  • Although helicopter transport had longer overall prehospital time, the transport duration was similar to that of ground ambulances, suggesting incrementally improved care without sacrificing timeliness.

Background: In France, patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) are usually transferred from remote hospitals to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) centres in mobile intensive care units (MICUs) with on-board medical staff. They are then returned to the remote hospitals by MICU 48 h after PCI. However, MICU transportation and beds in a PCI centre are in short supply.

Purpose: Computing trauma scores in the field allows immediate severity assessment for appropriate triage. Two pre-hospital scores can be useful in this context: the Triage-Revised Trauma Score (T-RTS) and the Mechanism, Glasgow, Age and arterial Pressure (MGAP) score. The Trauma Revised Injury Severity Score (TRISS), not applicable in the pre-hospital setting, is the reference score to predict in-hospital mortality after severe trauma.
