Background And Objective: Inadequate postintubation sedation (PIS) can lead to unplanned extubations, conscious paralysis, and overall unsafe care of patients. From 2018 to 2020, we realized at our hospital that ∼25% of children received sedation in an adequate time frame in the pediatric emergency department, with 2 unplanned dislodgements of the endotracheal tube. Our objective was to reduce time to initiating PIS from a mean of 39 minutes to less than 15 minutes in our pediatric emergency department by September 2021.

Lift Every Voice: Engaging Black Adolescents in Social Justice Service-Learning to Promote Mental Health and Educational Equity.

This study reports on the feasibility and acceptability of a social justice infused service-learning (S-L) program to promote Black adolescent mental health and educational equity. We convened a community advisory board to help adapt and pilot test, via open trial mixed method design, an evidence-based service-learning program for Black middle school adolescents (n = 21) attending summer camp at a faith-based setting. We describe a S-L curriculum, with a focus on the achievement gap, and training for church staff and assess staff and youth reports of feasibility, acceptability, and promise to (a) improve/engage psychological engagement targets, and (b) improve academic motivation, and social-emotional and behavioral outcomes.

Improvement in Heart Failure Self-Care and Patient Readmissions with Caregiver Education: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Caregivers support heart failure (HF) self-care with little HF education. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a caregiver-only educational intervention aimed at improving caregiver self-efficacy, perceived control, and HF knowledge, as well as patient self-care and 30-day cardiac readmission. In total, 37 patients and their caregivers were randomly assigned to a control condition or a caregiver-only educational intervention with telephone follow-up.

Successful publication of quality improvement (QI) work is predicated on the use of established QI frameworks and rigorous analytical methods that allow teams to understand the impact of interventions over time. This article is meant to help QI teams disseminate their work more broadly through publication by providing tangible methods that many journals desire in QI articles with specific examples of published works referenced throughout the article. We introduce improvement frameworks that teams should identify early and use as a foundation throughout their projects.

Pediatric emergency department to primary care transfer protocol: Transforming access for patients' needs.

Background: Previous interventions to reduce emergency department (ED) overutilization from non-urgent visits have shown little success. At our hospital, we created an ED to primary care clinic (PCC) transfer protocol for non-urgent ED visits of established patients. It Pays to be Accurate: Improving Critical Care Documentation in a Pediatric Emergency Department.

Background: Clinician documentation is highly variable, and awareness of documentation requirements remains low despite post-training experience. At our hospital, critical care (CC) documentation was inconsistent. Our aim was to increase appropriate CC attestations from 51% to 90% for status asthmaticus, anaphylaxis, and diabetic ketoacidosis in the pediatric emergency department by December 2021.

Measuring High-Order Phonon Correlations in an Optomechanical Resonator.

We use single photon detectors to probe the motional state of a superfluid ^{4}He resonator of mass ∼1  ng. The arrival times of Stokes and anti-Stokes photons (scattered by the resonator's acoustic mode) are used to measure the resonator's phonon coherences up to the fourth order. By postselecting on photon detection events, we also measure coherences in the resonator when ≤3 phonons have been added or subtracted.

Caregiver Strain, Social Support and Mental Health Service Use Among Urban African American Mothers.

Caregiver strain and social support have been identified as both facilitators and deterrents to parental mental health service use on behalf of their children. This study focused on the relationship between caregiver strain, social support, and mental health service use among African American mothers of children at-risk or meeting criteria for a disruptive behavioral disorder and living in urban communities of concentrated poverty. Mothers ( = 89), participating in a five-year NIMH funded study of school-based community mental health services, completed measures at baseline of caregiver strain and both perceived and received social support.
