ADP-ribosylation factors (Arfs) play central roles in the regulation of vesicular trafficking through the Golgi. Arfs are activated at the Golgi membrane by guanine-nucleotide-exchange factors (GEFs) that are recruited from cytosol. Here, we describe a novel mechanism for the regulation of recruitment and activity of the ArfGEF Golgi-specific BFA resistance factor 1 (GBF1).

Background/aims: We aimed to evaluate nucleoside/nucleotide combination therapy in treatment-naïve HBeAg-positive patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Methods: One hundred and fifteen HBeAg-positive patients received lamivudine 100 mg daily plus placebo (monotherapy) or lamivudine 100 mg plus adefovir dipoxil 10 mg daily (combination therapy) for 104 weeks in a randomized double-blind study.

Results: Time-weighted average change in serum HBV DNA from baseline up to week 16 was -4.

Background: The effectiveness of antiviral therapy in preventing disease progression in patients with chronic hepatitis B and advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis is unknown.

Methods: Patients with chronic hepatitis B who had histologically confirmed cirrhosis or advanced fibrosis were randomly assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive lamivudine (100 mg per day) or placebo for a maximum of five years. Of 651 patients, 436 were assigned to receive lamivudine and 215 to receive placebo.
