Background: High prevalence rates of β2-agonist use among athletes in competitive sports makes it tempting to speculate that illegitimate use of β2-agonists boosts performance. However, data regarding the potential performance-enhancing effects of inhaled β2-agonists and its underlying molecular basis are scarce.
Methods: In total, 24 competitive endurance athletes (12f/12m) participated in a clinical double-blinded balanced four-way block cross-over trial to investigate single versus combined effects of β2-agonists salbutamol (SAL) and formoterol (FOR), to evaluate the potential performance enhancement of SAL (1200 µg, Cyclocaps, Pb Pharma GmbH), FOR (36 µg, Sandoz, HEXAL AG) and SAL + FOR (1200 µg + 36 µg) compared to placebo (PLA, Gelatine capsules containing lactose monohydrate, Pharmacy of the University Hospital Ulm).
Purpose: Cannabis is a psychotomimetic agent that induces impairment of sensory perception. We present detailed clinical and electrophysiological data of patients with hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD) after marijuana consumption.
Methods: A HPPD patient and four heavy cannabis smokers with no visual disturbances (controls) underwent complete ophthalmological examination including psychophysical tests (visual acuity, color vision, visual field, and dark adaptation) and detailed electrophysiological examinations, including extended Ganzfeld ERG, multifocal ERG, and electrooculography (EOG).
Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived protein with atheroprotective and immunoregulatory function. Adiponectin and activin A reduce foam cell formation and adiponectin activates the p38 MAPK pathway that is well described to induce activin A. Therefore, it was analyzed whether adiponectin alters activin A in primary human monocytes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe abundance of the adiponectin receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2, and the effects of the antidiabetic adipokine adiponectin in monocytes of normal-weight and overweight controls and type 2 diabetic patients (T2D) were analyzed. AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 mRNAs were increased in monocytes of obese controls and T2D patients when compared to normal-weight controls, and AdipoR1 mRNA positively correlated to AdipoR2 mRNA, the waist to hip ratio and systemic adiponectin. However, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 proteins were lower in monocytes of T2D compared to normal-weight donors.

Monocytes were isolated from normal weight and overweight controls and patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and monocytic release of IL-6 positively correlated with the body mass index (BMI). HMW-adiponectin further enhanced and LMW-adiponectin reduced IL-6 release in monocytes.

Research groups have consistently reported on behavioral and cognitive improvements of children with ADHD after neurofeedback. However, neurofeedback has not been commonly accepted as a treatment for ADHD. This is due, in part, to several methodological limitations.
