Evaluating Adequacy of VTE Prophylaxis Dosing with Enoxaparin for Overweight and Obese Patients on an Orthopedic-Medical Trauma Comanagement Service.

Objectives: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common nosocomial condition, developing frequently in overweight and obese patients. VTE prophylaxis with weight-based enoxaparin dosing may be more effective than the standard dosing regimen for overweight and obese patients; however, weight-based dosing is not practiced routinely. In this pilot study we sought to evaluate prophylactic anticoagulation regimens used for VTE prevention in overweight and obese patients on the Orthopedic-Medical Trauma (OMT) service to inform the need for modification of dosing practices.

ED Patient Experience: Does Day of the Week or Time of the Day Matter?

The effect of the arrival day of the week, arrival time of the day, or discharge time of the day on emergency department (ED) patient experience (PE) scores has not been well studied. We performed a retrospective analysis of ED patients between July 1st, 2018 through March 31st, 2021. We recorded demographics, PE scores, arrival day, arrival and discharge times, and total ED and perceived ED times.

Head CT scan overuse in frequently admitted medical patients.

Background: Patients frequently admitted to medical services undergo extensive computed tomography (CT) imaging. Some of this imaging may be unnecessary, and in particular, head CT scans may be over-used in this patient population. We describe the frequency of abnormal head CT scans in patients with multiple medical hospitalizations.

Resident sign-out and patient hand-offs: opportunities for improvement.

Background: Inpatient care is characterized by multiple transitions of patient care responsibilities. In most residency programs trainees manage transitions via verbal, written, or combined methods of communication termed "sign-out." Often sign-out occurs without standardization or supervision.
