Understanding how populations respond to increasingly variable conditions is a major objective for natural resource managers forecasting extinction risk. The lesson from current modelling is clear: increasing environmental variability increases population abundance variability. We show that this paradigm fails to describe a broad class of empirically observed dynamics, namely endogenously driven population cycles.

In September 2019, a 22-year-old man with a history of drug abuse presented to the hospital with altered mental status. Due to a suspected drug overdose, a blood sample taken on admission and a urine sample collected 30 h thereafter were submitted to our laboratory to test for illegal drugs, pharmaceutical substances, and designer drugs. Top-down and bottom-up theories of trophic control have been fundamental to our understanding of community dynamics and structure. However, most ecological theories have focused on equilibrium dynamics and do not provide predictions for communities' responses in temporally fluctuating environments. By deriving the frequency response of populations in different trophic communities, we extend the top-down and bottom-up theories of ecology to include how temporal fluctuations in potential primary productivity percolate up the food chain and are re-expressed as population variability.

Metapopulations persist when local populations are rapidly recolonized following local extinctions. Such persistence requires asynchrony; simultaneous crashes of all populations would leave no source of recolonization. We show theoretically and experimentally that catastrophic population extinctions themselves can promote metapopulation persistence, by preventing spatial synchrony and thus enhancing recolonization.

4-hydroxynonenal (4HNE) is a major product of peroxidative membrane lipid destruction and exerts a variety of deleterious actions through formation of covalent adducts with cellular nucleophiles. Consequently, a number of cellular enzyme systems exist that are capable of detoxifying this reactive aldehyde by oxidation, reduction, or conjugation with glutathione. In this investigation we characterize the multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2) as the primary transmembrane transport protein in hepatocytes responsible for extracellular export of 4HNE-glutathione conjugate (HNE-SG) from the intracellular site of its formation.
