Opinions and procedures, which are incorrect or invalid but continue to exist, are discussed. Eight seldomly criticised subjects have been selected which are relevant for the theory and practice of orthodontics. First, the idea that all individuals have or can reach an occlusion with contact between all opposing teeth is commented upon.

After clarifying the role and significance of the European Federations of Orthodontic Specialists Associations (EFOSA), the results of a recent survey examining the situation of the Speciality of Orthodontics in Europe are presented. Among the many items included are the recognition and availability of orthodontic specialists, their training, and working conditions, the fees charged, and the present insurance and refunding systems.

Objective: To gain more insight into the prevalence of dental agenesis.

Methods: Data from Caucasian populations in North America, Australia and Europe were included in a meta-analysis. For the prevalence of African American, Chinese and Arab groups only indications could be reported because of a limited number of studies.
