The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of initial treatment provided by dental practitioners to children aged 1-17 years with various types of traumatic dental injuries at public dental clinics in Tanzania. Questionnaires on initial treatment were mailed to 188 practitioners and returned by 138 (73%). The reported treatments were analyzed in relation to the dental practitioners' qualifications and area of practice.

The caries experience among 6- and 12-year-old children in the The Netherlands from the mid seventies showed a continued decreasing trend. Starting in 1969, periodic cross-sectional examinations of schoolchildren have been carried out in the city of The Hague (the Netherlands). The results of 1996 show that no further change in caries prevalence has taken place in 5- and 7-year-old Dutch children of low, medium and high SES. In 11-year-old children of medium and high SES a further decrease in caries prevalence could be observed in 1996.

Purpose: To evaluate the 1-year clinical performance of Dyract in primary molars.

Materials And Methods: 55 children (aged 4-9 years) received 1-3 restorations (n = 91) utilizing Dyract, a new restorative material combining properties of both glass ionomers and composites.

Results: The so-called compomer material showed good handling characteristics and a survival rate of 97% after 1 year.

In 1986 a nationwide dental survey was performed in the Netherlands. This article describes the prevalence of dentofacial anomalies in the age group 15-74 yr, as well as the subjective and objective need for orthodontic treatment. The main findings were: severe crowding in the mandible was found in approximately 15%; an Angle Class II situation was seen in 28%; a maxillary overjet of greater than 5 mm was found in 23%; orthodontic treatment had or was being performed in approximately 25%; 45% of orthodontic treatment was carried out by a general practitioner; using professionally defined need, 39% of the population required treatment whereas only 14% of the people felt that this treatment was necessary.

In this article the results are presented of a nationwide representative study of dental anomalies in the group of 15-74 years Dutchmen. Also the subjective and objective need of orthodontic treatment in the age group 15-34 years is described. The principal findings are: of the 15-19 years olds, 27% is treated with orthodontic appliance; general practitioners performed 45% of these orthodontic treatments; --unsatisfied with the position of the front teeth is 25% of the 15-34 year old; an objective need for treatment is found in 39% of this age group; in 14% there is both an objective and a subjective need for treatment; both the subjective and objective need of orthodontic treatment is greater in the group of persons who were treated in the past than in the group of persons who never were treated.
