Under an artificial light:dark cycle, females of Lampronia capitella were observed calling, with extended terminal abdominal segments, during the first 2 hr of the photoperiod. Extracts of terminal abdominal segments from females elicited large electroantennographic responses from male antennae. Gas chromatography with electroantennographic detection revealed three active peaks.

The aim of this prospective randomized study was to compare the efficacy of polysulfone high-flux vs. polysulfone low-flux hemodialysis (HD) treatment regarding removal of AGEs, tHcy, Cysta and DMG.

Field trapping trials confirmed activity of this compound. The presence of the geometrical isomer (E10)-tetradecenyl acetate, a pheromone component of other Phyllonorycter species, reduced trap efficacy.

Purpose: To determine the concentrations of methylglyoxal-derived advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), the hydroimidazolones MG-H1 and -H2, in soluble human lens proteins and compare them with the concentrations of other methylglyoxal-derived AGEs and pentosidine.
Methods: Lens protein samples were hydrolyzed enzymatically. AGEs were assayed without derivatization by HPLC with tandem mass spectrometry; the fluorescent AGEs argpyrimidine and pentosidine were assayed by fluorometric detection.
The "sexually deceptive" orchid Chiloglottis trapeziformis attracts males of its pollinator species, the thynnine wasp Neozeleboria cryptoides, by emitting a unique volatile compound, 2-ethyl-5-propylcyclohexan-1,3-dione, which is also produced by female wasps as a male-attracting sex pheromone.

Methods: 2 patients were operated for knotted catheters in our institution during the last 2 years, and their records are demonstrated.
The repair of tissue damage is a key survival process in all organisms and involves the coordinated activation of several cell types. Cell-cell communication is clearly fundamental to this process, and a great deal is known about extracellular communication within the wound site via cytokines. Here we show that direct cell-cell communication through connexin 43 (Cx43) gap junction channels also plays a major role in the wound healing process.

Possible contributing factors are elevated blood pressure values, changes in vascular reactivity, concentrations of lipids, fibrinogen and carboxyhemoglobin, in patients with diabetes mellitus, the quality of diabetes control and insulin resistance. Other possible risk factors may include advanced glycation end (AGE)-products, total plasma homocysteine and metabolites as well as symmetrical (SDMA) and asymmetrical (ADMA) dimethylarginine.

A deltaczcA deletion of the gene for the central component of the Co2+/Zn2+/Cd2+ efflux system CzcCBA combined with the expression level of czcCBA as studied with a phi(czcC-lacZ-czcBA) operon fusion demonstrated that CzcCBA was the only prerequisite for resistance to Co2+/Zn2+/Cd2+ at concentrations of 200 microM and above. The cellular content of the CzcA protein (resistance nodulation cell division protein family RND) determined by Western blot was used to model the CzcCBA expression level as the response to various metal concentrations.

CusA and CusB were essential for copper resistance, and CusC and CusF were required for full resistance. Replacements of methionine residues 573, 623, and 672 with isoleucine in CusA resulted in loss of copper resistance, demonstrating their functional importance.

Setting: Departments of Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine III, University of Jena, Jena, Germany.
Methods: Pentosidine, CML, and imidazolone concentrations were measured in the water-soluble protein fraction of 44 cataractous lenses (from 24 nondiabetic and 20 diabetic donors) and 6 noncataractous control lenses.
Objective: To investigate serum levels of the advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) pentosidine and N epsilon-carboxymethyllysine (CML) in patients classified into different osteoporosis subgroups according to histomorphometric data.
Method: Serum samples were obtained from 116 osteoporotic patients (34 men, 82 women) classified by bone histomorphometry into subgroups with high turnover (HTO, n = 32), low turnover (LTO, n = 39), normal turnover (NTO, n = 9) and cellular uncoupled osteoporosis (CUO, n = 36). Pentosidine was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography, and CML by a competitive enzyme-linked immunoassay.
Detailed gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analyses have been applied to sediment samples of the Havel and Spree River, tributaries to the Elbe River, in order to identify specific molecular markers of anthropogenic activities. Despite a wide variety of lipophilic organic compounds from diffuse anthropogenic contamination, a local emission of an industrial point source was reflected by specific markers including halogenated compounds and nitrogen containing substances (4-ethylnitrobenzene, formyl piperidine, acetyl piperidine). In addition to well-known anthropogenic markers various new molecular tracers were detected and are discussed, namely plasticizers (alkylsulfonic acid aryl esters, tributyl and tricresyl phosphates), synthetic fragrances (galaxolide, tonalide, 4-oxoisophorone), additives of personal care products (4-methoxycinnamic acid 2-ethylhexyl ester, benzyl benzoate, dibenzyl ether, benzophenone), occurring due to sewage treatment plant input.

The mass spectra of dinaphthylsulfones are characterized by the molecular ion (m/z 318), and the naphthyl fragment ion m/z 127. Losses of HSO(2) and C(10)H(7)O from the molecular ion lead to different mass spectra for each isomer.

Purpose: To investigate whether the advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) pentosidine, N( epsilon )-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), and imidazolone are present in the aqueous of cataract patients and how AGE levels correlate to cataract type or the diabetic condition of the patient.
Setting: Departments of Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine, University of Jena, Jena, Germany.
Methods: Aqueous and serum samples from 77 cataractous patients (33 nondiabetics, 44 diabetics; 14 with dense posterior, 63 with nuclear cataracts) were investigated.
Advanced glycation end (AGE)-products, a complex and heterogeneous group of compounds, have been implicated in diabetes-related long-term complications. Up to the present, only few data exist about serum levels of the AGE-proteins N- epsilon -carboxymethyllysine (CML) and pentosidine in selection-free populations of patients with type 1 and insulin-treated type 2 diabetes mellitus. In the present 10-year, population-based trial of patients with insulin-treated diabetes mellitus, serum CML and pentosidine levels were examined in correlation to the patients' quality of diabetes control and the prevalence of diabetes-related long-term complications.

Their role as risk factors for cardiovascular complications is still unknown. This study aims to investigate whether elevated serum levels of the AGEs pentosidine, N(epsilon)-carboxymethyllysine (CML), and the 3-deoxyglucosone-derived imidazolone involve a greater risk for cardiovascular events (CVEs) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH).

In this study, we analyzed 17 T/HRBCL cases using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) combined with microdissection of single CD20+ neoplastic cells and DNA amplification by degenerate oligonucleotide primed-polymerase chain reaction, an approach we previously used in LPHL.
