This report describes the characterisation of a monoclonal antibody (mAb), AB6, which recognises specifically a cluster of canine leukocyte surface molecules. The immunogen used for obtaining the AB6 mAb was a lysate of canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). This novel mAb belongs to the IgG2a isotype, and reacted in Western blot with four different canine leukocyte glycoproteins with apparent molecular weights of 180, 190, 205 and 220 kDa.

In the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum nitrogenase activity is regulated by reversible ADP-ribosylation of dinitrogenase reductase in response to external so called "switch-off" effectors. Activation of the modified, inactive form is catalyzed by dinitrogenase reductase activating glycohydrolase (DRAG) which removes the ADP-ribose moiety. This study addresses the signal transduction between external effectors and DRAG.

Host cell reactions are a crucial determinant for tumor invasion. We analyzed on a genomewide scale gene expression differences between microdissected tissues taken from unaffected liver tissue of a human colorectal tumor (LS174) growing in the livers of nude mice and tissue from the host part of the invasive front. Due to the low degree of interspecies cross-hybridization of 15% as determined on Affymetrix microarrays, our xenograft model allowed for the distinction of genes of murine versus human origin even if the respective tissues could not be isolated separately.

The hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 is a master transcriptional activator of oxygen-regulated genes involved in energy metabolism, angiogenesis, and erythropoiesis. HIF-1 is composed of the two subunits HIF-1alpha and HIF-1beta (also called ARNT). The destruction of HIF-1alpha in the presence of oxygen is initiated by prolyl-4-hydroxylation.

Background: Determinants of survival and of risk of vascular events after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or minor ischaemic stroke are not well defined in the long term. We aimed to restudy these risks in a prospective cohort of patients after TIA or minor ischaemic stroke (Rankin grade< or =3), after 10 years or more.

Methods: We assessed the survival status and occurrence of vascular events in 2473 participants of the Dutch TIA Trial (recruitment in 1986-89; arterial cause of cerebral ischaemia).

Uretero-arterial fistulae are rare. Immediate diagnosis and treatment are crucial in this life-threatening disorder and thus a uretero-arterial fistula in a patient with persistent hematuria should be taken into consideration. The authors report a case of a fistula between the right ureter and right common iliac artery.

Purpose: We prospectively measured the levels of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, IL-10, and procollagen III peptide (P III P) in serum from non-small-cell lung cancer patients treated with photons combined with protons or protons alone. These factors were quantified because they may be extremely important in the development of side effects, and the treated volume integral dose may be crucial in inducing them.

Methods: Of the 12 participating patients, 6 with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and 3 with adenocarcinoma received combined photon/proton beam radiation, whereas 2 with SCC and 1 with large-cell carcinoma (LCC) received only proton radiation.

Statins have been reported to lower the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease; however, the mechanism of this potentially important neuroprotective action is not understood. Lowering cholesterol levels does not appear to be the primary mechanism. Statins have pleiotropic effects in addition to lowering cholesterol, and statins may act on several different pathways involving distinct gene expression patterns that would be difficult to determine by focusing on a few genes or their products in a single study.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a nonpsychoactive marijuana constituent, was recently shown as an oral antihyperalgesic compound in a rat model of acute inflammation. We examined whether the CBD antihyperalgesic effect could be mediated by cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) or cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2) and/or by transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1). Rats received CBD (10 mg kg(-1)) and the selective antagonists: SR141716 (N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide) for CB1, SR144528 (N-[(1S)-endo-1,3,3-trimethylbicyclo[2.

Intestinal metaplasia in Barrett's esophagus (BIM) is a precancerous condition, whereas the carcinogenic potential of intestinal metaplasia of the cardia (CIM) is uncertain. Although clinically important, histological distinction between both conditions by endoscopic biopsies is considered problematic. In the present study, 4-mm samples of BIM (n=31) and CIM (n=9) were selected from esophagectomy specimens that had been resected for esophageal cancer.

Background And Purpose: In some people the blood supply to the posterior cerebral artery occurs partly or even exclusively via the carotid system. This anatomic configuration may influence the risk of occipital lobe infarction. We studied the presence and direction of flow in the posterior communicating artery (PCoA) in patients with an occipital lobe infarct and in healthy controls.
