This preregistered ex vivo investigation examined the dentinal hybrid layer formation of a resinous infiltrant (Icon), with reference to both thickness (HLT) and homogeneity when combined with modified tunnel preparation (occlusal cavity only) and internal/external caries infiltration. The adhesives Syntac and Scotchbond MP were used as controls (Groups 1 and 3) or in combination with Icon (Groups 2 and 4). The underlying mechanism of the ongoing seismic swarm in the Noto Peninsula, Japan, which generates earthquakes at 10 times the average regional rate, remains elusive. We capture the evolution of the subsurface stress state by monitoring changes in seismic wave velocities over an 11-year period. A sustained long-term increase in seismic velocity that is seasonally modulated drops before the earthquake swarm.

Low-frequency earthquakes, atypical seismic events distinct from regular earthquakes, occur downdip of the seismogenic megathrust where an aseismic rheology dominates the subduction plate boundary. Well situated to provide clues on the slip regime of this unique faulting environment, their distinctive waveforms reflect either an unusual rupture process or unusually strong attenuation in their source zone. We take advantage of the unique geometry of seismicity in the Nankai Trough to isolate the spectral signature of low-frequency earthquakes after correcting for empirically derived attenuation.

The reaction of ytterbium metal with ammonium tri-fluoro-acetate in liquid ammonia resulted in a green substance comprising a substantial amount of ytterbium(II) tri-fluoro-acetate that is a useful precursor for the oxidative synthesis of the new ytterbium(III) compound, [(NH) (HO) ][YbF(OCCF)(HO)]·4HO ( = 1/4), in aqueous tri-fluoro-acetic acid. This mixed ammonium/oxonium crystalline solid is the first example of a substance containing an -hexa-nuclear ytterbium(III) complex with μ-face-capping fluorido ligands. Huntington disease (HD) is the most frequent monogenetic neurodegenerative disease and can be unequivocally diagnosed even in the preclinical stage, at least in all individuals in whom the CAG expansion mutation in the huntingtin gene (HTT) is in the range of full penetrance. Therefore, important preconditions for an intervention early in the disease process are met, rendering modification of the course of the disease in a clinically meaningful way possible. The Physcomitrium patens DICER-LIKE1a (PpDCL1a) mRNA encoding the essential Dicer protein for microRNA (miRNA) biogenesis harbors an intronic miRNA (miR1047). An autoregulatory mechanism to control PpDCL1a abundance that is based on competitive processing of the intronic miRNA and proper PpDCL1a mRNA splicing has previously been proposed. If intron splicing occurs first the mRNA can be translated into the functional PpDCL1a protein, whereas the processing of the intronic miRNA catalyzed by PpDCL1a itself, prior to pre-mRNA splicing, generates a truncated transcript unable to produce a functional protein.

Background: Smell dysfunction has been recognized as an early symptom of SARS-CoV-2 infection, often occurring before the onset of core symptoms of the respiratory tract, fever or muscle pain. In most cases, olfactory dysfunction is accompanied by reduced sense of taste, is partial (microsmia) and seems to normalize after several weeks, however, especially in cases of virus-induced complete smell loss (anosmia), there are indications of persisting deficits even 2 months after recovery from the acute disease, pointing towards the possibility of chronic or even permanent smell reduction for a significant part of the patient population. To date, we have no knowledge on the specificity of anosmia towards specific odorants or chemicals and about the longer-term timeline of its persistence or reversal.
