Gender and the transmission of civic engagement: assessing the influences on youth civic activity.

The study of civic activity has become a central focus for many social scientists over the past decade, generating considerable research and debate. Previous studies have largely overlooked the role of youth socialization into civic life, most notably in the settings of home and school. Further, differences along gender lines in civic capacity have not been given sufficient attention in past studies.

Characterization and crystal structure of cadmium(II) halide complexes with amino acids and their derivatives: VII. Crystal structures of aquadibromo(3-aminopropanoic acid)cadmium(II), dichloro(4-aminobutanoic acid)cadmium(II), diaquabis(aminohexanoic acid)cadmium(II) tetrachlorocadmium(II), and dibromo(azetidine-3-carboxylic acid)cadmium(II).

Seven cadmium complexes: [CdX2(Hapro)(H2O)n] (X: Cl(1), Br(2)), [CdX2(Hgaba)] (X: Cl(3), Br(4)), [Cd(Hahex)2(H2O)2][CdCl4] (5), and [CdX2(Haze-3)](H2O)n (X: Cl(6), Br(7)) have been prepared and investigated by means of IR and FT Raman spectra. The crystal and molecular structures of 2, 3, 5 and 7 were determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. In complex 2, the cadmium atom is in a distorted octahedral geometry, ligated by two carboxyl oxygen atoms of Hapro, a water molecule, and three bromine atoms; one is terminal and each of the other two is bridging two cadmium atoms to make a polymer.

Vascular injuries in total hip replacement arthroplasty: a review of the problem.

Considering the proximity of the major endopelvic and exopelvic vascular structures to the hip joint, we find that reported vascular complications of total hip replacement are relatively rare. We encountered 1 case of vascular injury after primary, and 2 cases after revision, total hip arthroplasty. This stimulated us to send a postal survey to the members of the British Hip Society inquiring about such vascular complications, with a view to evaluating their incidence, management, and final outcome.

Environmental injustice and the Mississippi hog industry.

The recent growth and restructuring of the swine industry in the state of Mississippi has raised various environmental and socioeconomic concerns. We spatially examined the location and attributes of 67 industrial hog operations to determine if African American and low-income communities have a high prevalence of industrial hog operations located near their neighborhoods at the census block group level. We used spatial data and cross-classification analysis to compare the prevalence of industrial hog operations in neighborhoods that are primarily African American and low income with the prevalence in neighborhoods that are African American and affluent.
