This so called overlap syndrome leads to more profound hypoxemia, hypercapnic respiratory failure, and pulmonary hypertension than each of these conditions independently. Not infrequently, these patients show profound hypoxemia, despite optimal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for their SAHS.
