Mounting agents with low toxicity and with fast curing time for digital pathology in the intraoperative frozen section laboratory.

Aims: In intraoperative frozen tissue section laboratories (FS laboratories) conventional practice for mounting coverslips on tissue slides involves the use of xylene-based mounting agents, such as Pertex. However, toxic vapours pose a risk to biomedical laboratory scientists (BLS) and pathologists who handle the wet slides to provide fast and urgent diagnostic results to surgeons during operations. Our study aims to evaluate non-toxic mounting agents to substitute Pertex, preferably with a fast curing time suitable for the demands of the new digital era in pathology.

Detailed operational building data for six office rooms in Denmark: Occupancy, indoor environment, heating, ventilation, lighting and room control monitoring with sub-hourly temporal resolution.

The operational building data presented in this paper has been collected from six office rooms located in an office building (research and educational purposes) located on the main campus of Aalborg University in Denmark. The dataset consists of measurements of occupancy, indoor environmental quality, room-level and system-level heating, ventilation and lighting operation at a 5 min resolution. The indoor environmental quality and building system data were collected from the building management system.

Dataset of smart heat and water meter data with accompanying building characteristics.

The data presented were sourced from 34,884 commercial smart heat meters and 10,765 commercial smart water meters, spanning a timeframe of up to 5 years (2018-2022). All data primarily originated from single-family houses in Aalborg Municipality, Denmark. Furthermore, comprehensive building characteristics were collected for each building, where available, from the Danish Building and Dwelling Register (BBR) and Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) input data.

DNA-Mediated Peptide Assembly into Protein Mimics.

The design of new protein structures is challenging due to their vast sequence space and the complexity of protein folding. Here, we report a new modular DNA-templated strategy to construct protein mimics. We achieve the spatial control of multiple peptide units by conjugation with DNA and hybridization to a branched DNA trimer template followed by covalent stapling of the preorganized peptides into a single unit.

Days alive and out of hospital after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery wedge resection in the era of enhanced recovery.

Background: Days alive and out of hospital is proposed as a valid and patient-centred quality measure for perioperative care. However, no procedure-specific data exist after pulmonary wedge resection. The aim of this study was to assess the first 90 days alive and out of hospital after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery wedge resection in an optimized enhanced recovery programme.

Higher Myonuclei Density in Muscle Fibers Persists Among Former Users of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids.

Context: No information exists on the long-lasting effects of supraphysiological anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) usage on the myocellular properties of human skeletal muscle in previous AAS users.

Objective: We hypothesized that former AAS users would demonstrate smaller myonuclei domains (ie, higher myonuclei density) than matched controls.

Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study in men aged 18-50 years engaged in recreational strength training.

Continuous perioperative heart rate variability monitoring in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy-a pilot study.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of cardiac autonomic modulation and is potentially related to hypotension, postoperative atrial fibrillation, and orthostatic intolerance. However, there is a lack of knowledge on which specific time points and indices to measure. To improve future study design, there is a need for procedure-specific studies in an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy setting, and for continuous measurement of perioperative HRV.

Time-course of heart rate variability after total hip arthroplasty.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the autonomic nervous system function and possibly related to postoperative outcome. Despite several HRV studies in different surgical settings, optimal indices and timepoints for measuring have not been adequately determined. Consequently, there is a need for detailed descriptive procedure-specific studies on the time-course of perioperative HRV within a modern fast-track surgical setting.

Automated Solid-Phase Oligo(disulfide) Synthesis.

A method for automated solid-phase synthesis of oligo(disulfide)s was developed. It is based on a synthetic cycle comprising removal of a protecting group from a resin-bound thiol followed by treatment with monomers containing a thiosulfonate as an activated precursor. For ease of purification and characterization, the disulfide oligomers were synthesized as extensions of oligonucleotides on an automated oligonucleotide synthesizer.

Early and late readmissions after enhanced recovery thoracoscopic lobectomy.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the incidence of and reasons for early (0-30 days) and late (31-90 days) readmissions after enhanced recovery video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected consecutive VATS lobectomy data in an institutional database from January 2019 through December 2020. All reasons for readmission with complete follow-up were individually evaluated.

Methods: Patients aged ≥18 years with non-small-cell lung cancer undergoing VATS lobectomy in an established ERAS programme were eligible.

Introduction: Financial incentive programs promote smoking cessation. However, the incentive amount which should be provided-and how this may interact with other program characteristics-is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the design of incentive programs for smoking cessation on current smokers' perceptions of programs and willingness to enroll.

Preoperative heart rate variability as a predictor of perioperative outcomes: a systematic review without meta-analysis.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a predictor of mortality and morbidity after non-lethal cardiac ischemia, but the relation between preoperatively measured HRV and intra- and postoperative complications is sparsely studied and most recently reviewed in 2007. We, therefore, reviewed the literature regarding HRV as a predictor for intra- and postoperative complications and outcomes. We carried out a systematic review without meta-analysis.

Serum Insulin-like Factor 3 Levels Are Reduced in Former Androgen Users, Suggesting Impaired Leydig Cell Capacity.

Context: Illicit use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is frequently observed in men and is associated with subsequent testosterone deficiency although the long-term effect on gonadal function is still unclear. Serum insulin-like factor 3 (INSL3) has been suggested to be a superior biomarker of Leydig cell secretory capacity compared to testosterone.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate serum INSL3 concentrations in AAS users.

Higgs Boson Emerging from the Dark.

We propose a new nonthermal mechanism of dark matter production based on vacuum misalignment. A global X-charge asymmetry is generated at high temperatures, under which both the will-be Higgs boson and the dark matter are charged. At lower energies, the vacuum changes alignment and breaks the U(1)_{X}, leading to the emergence of the Higgs bosonand of a fraction of charge asymmetry stored in the stable dark matter relic.

Enabling good outcomes in older adults on dialysis: a qualitative study.

Background: Older patients on dialysis may not have optimal outcomes, particularly with regards to quality of life. Existing research is focused mainly on survival, with limited information about other outcomes. Such information can help in shared decision-making around dialysis initiation; it can also be used to improve outcomes in patients established on dialysis.

Discussions during shared decision-making in older adults with advanced renal disease: a scoping review.

Objectives: This review summarises the information available for clinicians counselling older patients with kidney failure about treatment options, focusing on prognosis, quality of life, the lived experiences of treatment and the information needs of older adults.

Design: We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute Methodology for Scoping Reviews. The final report conforms to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines.

Successful implementation of evidence-based guidelines in a regional emergency department for children presenting with acute asthma.

Objective: To evaluate the adherence to asthma evidence-based guidelines before and after a quality improvement process.

Design: A controlled trial was conducted at two regional hospitals (intervention and control hospitals). We performed a retrospective pre-intervention audit, followed by a post-intervention audit 1 year after the implementation of evidence-based guidelines.

Effect of the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist eplerenone on liver fat and metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (MIRAD trial).

Aim: To investigate whether the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist eplerenone has beneficial effects on liver fat and metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist in type 2 diabetes (MIRAD) trial.

Material And Methods: In this 26-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we enrolled 140 patients with T2D and high risk of cardiovascular disease. Patients were randomized 1:1 to either eplerenone with a target dose of 200 mg/day for patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 60 mL/min per 1.

Prevalence of asthma and allergic disorders in regional, rural, and indigenous children aged 6-8 years in Tasmania.

: Asthma and allergic diseases are poorly described in rural areas. The objective of this study was, therefore, to determine the prevalence of wheezing, asthma, and other allergic disorders among children living in regional and rural Tasmania. : Data from a cross-sectional survey using standardized questionnaires of asthma, allergic conditions and food allergies were collected from 39 primary schools across North West Tasmania.

Asymmetric Bilateral Lichen Striatus: A Rare Presentation following Multiple Blaschko's Lines.

Lichen striatus (LS) is an uncommon, acquired, self-limited, and benign linear dermatosis of unknown etiology that most often occurs unilaterally and is confined to the lines of Blaschko. A healthy 7-year-old girl presented to our clinic with bilateral asymmetric LS occurring on the right arm and left leg of 1-year duration. Very few cases of bilateral LS have been previously reported in the literature, with none from clinics within the United States.

Validation of the IPOS-Renal Symptom Survey in Advanced Kidney Disease: A Cross-sectional Study.

Context: The significant symptom burden in advanced renal disease is often poorly recognized by clinicians. Recently, the Integrated Palliative Outcome Score (IPOS)-renal survey was developed from pre-existing tools to capture these symptoms and other common concerns.

Objectives: We studied the validity and reliability of the IPOS-renal survey (patient and staff versions) in an Australian population.
