Article Synopsis
  • Obesity negatively affects atrial remodeling and outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation, with this study focusing on how body mass index (BMI) influences scar formation after catheter ablation.
  • Analysis of 811 patients revealed that higher baseline left atrial volume and more comorbidities were present in obese individuals, with Class 3 obesity showing the lowest rates of ablation-induced scar formation.
  • The study concluded that obese patients have less effective scar formation and more residual fibrosis following ablation compared to those with normal weight, indicating a significant impact of BMI on treatment outcomes.

Background: Catheter ablation has obtained class 1 indication in ablation of young, healthy patients with symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Anti-arrhythmic drugs (AADs) remain first-line therapy before ablating persistent AF (PersAF). We sought to evaluate the efficacy of a direct-to-catheter ablation approach against catheter ablation post AADs in PersAF.

Background: Catheter ablation is recognized as an effective treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). Despite its effectiveness, significant sex-specific differences have been observed, which influence the outcomes of the procedure. This study explores these differences in a cohort of patients with persistent AF.

Background: The results obtained to date concerning food groups, diet quality and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk vary according to criteria used and the study populations.

Aim: To study the relationships between food groups, diet quality and CRC risk, in an adult population of the Basque Country (North of Spain).

Methods: This observational study included 308 patients diagnosed with CRC and 308 age- and sex-matched subjects as controls.

Epidemiologic studies have revealed inconsistent evidence of gene-diet interaction in relation to colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of this study was to analyze them in a sample of cases and controls from the population-based bowel cancer screening program of the Osakidetza/Basque Health Service. This study analyzed dietetic, genetic, demographic, socioeconomic factors and lifestyles.

Given the significant population diversity in genetic variation, we aimed to investigate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously identified in studies of colorectal cancer (CRC) susceptibility were also relevant to the population of the Basque Country (North of Spain). We genotyped 230 CRC cases and 230 healthy controls for 48 previously reported CRC-susceptibility SNPs. Only the rs6687758 in DUPS10 exhibited a statistically significant association with CRC risk based on the crude analysis.

Introduction: Cure of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with gastric lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) leads to long-term clinical remission in the initial stages. As it is a rare disease, its management in clinical practice remains largely unknown and heterogeneity of care remains a concern. The aim was to audit the management and evolution of a large series of low-grade gastric MALT lymphomas from thirteen Spanish hospitals.

Background: Anisakiasis is caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked fish or cephalopods parasitized by live L3 larvae of nematode Anisakis spp. Larvae anchor to stomach mucosa releasing excretion/secretion products which contain the main allergens. It has been described that nematode larvae release venom allergen-like proteins among their excretion/secretion products.

Background: Accurate estimation of the Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) in the myoglobinuric acute renal failure (ARF) is necessary because its pathogenesis is believed to be mediated, at least in part, by the development of oxidative stress resulting from the generation of oxygen free radicals and reduced antioxidant defense system. The purpose of this study is to examine the TAS 24 and 72 h after glycerol injection in a model of myoglobinuric-ARF.

Experimental Design: The study was conduced in 28 Sprague-Dawley rats.

Oxygen metabolites play an important role in renal injury during myoglobinuric acute renal failure (ARF). This study was designed to determine the protective influence of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a hydroxyl radical scavenger, and treatment in an experimental model of myoglobinuric-ARF induced by intramuscular injection of hypertonic glycerol in rats. The rats were randomly distributed into five groups: Group 0 (n = 10), was assigned to receive 2mL saline (0,9%) intraperitoneally (ip); Group 1 (n = 10), NAC ip in a dose of 0 mg/100 g of body weight 30 min before the intramuscular (im) injection of 50% glycerol (10 mg/kg); Group 2 (n = 10), received saline 0,9% ip in a equivalent volume of NAC in Group I before the im injection of glycerol; Group 3 (n = 10), received NAC ip in a dose of 10 mg/100 g after im injection of glycerol; Group 4 (n = 10), saline 0,9% ip in a equivalent volume of NAC of the Group 3 after im administration of glycerol.
