Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac arrest is a major global health issue, and sodium bicarbonate (SB) is often used during CPR to address metabolic acidosis, though its effectiveness is debated.
  • A systematic review of studies from various medical databases found 12 relevant studies on SB's use in cardiac arrest, highlighting mixed results.
  • Overall, while some studies hint at potential benefits in certain situations, the review concluded that SB is generally not recommended for standard cardiac arrest treatment, suggesting more research is needed to explore specific cases where it might be useful.

Article Synopsis
  • - Asthma is a common chronic respiratory condition marked by hyper-responsiveness of the airways and occasional obstruction, with short-acting β agonists (SABA) being the main treatment for acute episodes.
  • - A case is reported where a young female patient experienced lactic acidosis after being treated with SABA, specifically salbutamol, for severe acute asthma; this was linked to her treatment despite showing significant improvement in breathing.
  • - After stopping the SABA treatment, the patient's symptoms, including respiratory distress and elevated lactate levels, improved quickly, and she was discharged after five days; this incident highlights the rare but important side effect of lactic acidosis associated with SABA use.

are flagellated protozoa that have been increasingly associated with upper and lower airway infection in humans. The prevalence and characterization of this disease in the critically ill remains poorly understood. We present a series of eleven ICU patients with confirmed spp.

Central venous catheter (CVC) insertion is a widely practiced technique for various purposes, such as administering fluids and medications, performing hemodialysis, and monitoring central venous pressure. During CVC insertion, numerous complications can arise, including the loss of the guidewire. This case involves a 35-year-old female undergoing long-term hospitalization due to severe brain injury resulting from head trauma.

The classic out-of-hospital approach to a patient with severe acute respiratory failure involves both orotracheal intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation. The use of non-invasive methods for respiratory support has been shown to be beneficial in managing both acute and chronic respiratory failure. However, its use had not been previously considered for air medical transport due to concerns related to airway safety during flight, limited oxygen availability, and limited experience in this setting.

Strongyloidiasis develops from the infection with (Family: Strongylidae) and was recently considered a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization due to its global distribution and high burden of infection. Here, we present the cases of two patients under corticosteroid therapy after neurosurgical surgery who developed septic shock-like hyperinfection syndrome due to disseminated strongyloidiasis. The first case is a 77-year-old man from Cape Verde who was diagnosed with an extra-axial right parietal brain mass.
