Objective: To analyze the relationship between the emotional intelligence of healthcare workers in a hospital environment and their perception of the safety climate in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Method: Cross-sectional, analytical study, carried out with 81 health workers who worked in hospitals during the pandemic, between September and November 2021. Data collection was carried out using an electronic form, which included a sociodemographic/occupational questionnaire and the Brazilian versions of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire and the Schutte Self Test.

We explored the metabolic integration of and its obligate endosymbiont by the transcriptomic analysis of the fat body of quasi-aposymbiotic cockroaches, where the endosymbionts were almost entirely removed with rifampicin. Fat bodies from quasi-aposymbiotic insects displayed large differences in gene expression compared to controls. In quasi-aposymbionts, the metabolism of phenylalanine and tyrosine involved in cuticle sclerotization and pigmentation increased drastically to compensate for the deficiency in the biosynthesis of these amino acids by the endosymbionts.

Antimicrobial peptide (AMP) genes, triggered by Toll and IMD pathways, are essential components of the innate immune system in the German cockroach . Brown adipose tissue (BAT) generates heat to maintain body temperature and suppress obesity. Agonists for nuclear receptors PPARα and PPARγ both affect brown adipocyte function, yet the interplay between these factors in BAT is uncertain. Here, we report that PPARα shares most genomic binding sites with PPARγ, and these common binding sites are more related to BAT function than PPARγ-selective sites without PPARα.

The present article traces the development of Timberlake's behavior systems framework while noting connections between it and Kantor's interbehavioral psychology. Congruent with Timberlake's behavior systems approach, interbehaviorists assert that (a) behavior is best understood as part of a complex causal system instead of a simple linear model, (b) the study of learning and behavior analysis should consist of the study of multiple responses and the systematic observation of response forms, (c) learning involves the reorganization of a behavior system, (d) behavioral analyses should be more ecological in orientation, and (e) psychology would benefit from a set of methodologies and apparatuses broader than those normally used to study operant and Pavlovian conditioning. These connections may derive from two broad themes shared by the behavior systems framework and interbehavioral psychology: an appreciation for a systems view of behavior and the importance of ethological considerations.

Insect lineages feeding on nutritionally restricted diets such as phloem sap, xylem sap, or blood, were able to diversify by acquiring bacterial species that complement lacking nutrients. For almost a century, the idea that neutral stimuli acquire meaning by association with biologically-relevant stimuli has been a fixture of psychologists' descriptions of Pavlovian conditioning. A potential problem with this view is that there exists unambiguous data against the notion that conditioned stimuli (CSs) are neutral prior to conditioning. The results of studies that examined the effect of the type of CS on the form of the conditioned response (CR) are consistent with a behavior systems framework, which supposes that the physical characteristics of the CS interact with an animal's evolved stimulus sensitivities and response tendencies related to the unconditioned stimulus (US) and other features of the training situation to influence the form of the CR.

Hemipteran insects are well-known in their ability to establish symbiotic relationships with bacteria. Among them, heteropteran insects present an array of symbiotic systems, ranging from the most common gut crypt symbiosis to the more restricted bacteriome-associated endosymbiosis, which have only been detected in members of the superfamily Lygaeoidea and the family Cimicidae so far. Human umbilical cord subepithelial cell-derived stem cells (hUC-SECs), human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs), and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs), all derived from human tissue, have been shown to have in vitro and in vivo therapeutic potential. The availability of complete genome sequences of bacterial endosymbionts with strict vertical transmission to the host progeny opens the possibility to estimate molecular evolutionary rates in different lineages and understand the main biological mechanisms influencing these rates. We have compared the rates of evolution for non-synonymous and synonymous substitutions in nine bacterial endosymbiont lineages, belonging to four clades (Baumannia, Blochmannia, Portiera, and Sulcia). The main results are the observation of a positive correlation between both rates with differences among lineages of up to three orders of magnitude and that the substitution rates decrease over long endosymbioses.

Background: The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is an important agricultural pest with global distribution. This phloem-sap feeder harbors a primary symbiont, "Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidarum", which compensates for the deficient nutritional composition of its food sources, and a variety of secondary symbionts. Interestingly, all of these secondary symbionts are found in co-localization with the primary symbiont within the same bacteriocytes, which should favor the evolution of strong interactions between symbionts.

Whiteflies are important agricultural insect pests, whose evolutionary success is related to a long-term association with a bacterial endosymbiont, Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidarum. To completely characterize this endosymbiont clade, we sequenced the genomes of three new Portiera strains covering the two extant whitefly subfamilies. Using endosymbiont and mitochondrial sequences we estimated the divergence dates in the clade and used these values to understand the molecular evolution of the endosymbiont coding sequences.

Bacterial endosymbiosis is an important evolutionary process in insects, which can harbor both obligate and facultative symbionts. The evolution of these symbionts is driven by evolutionary convergence, and they exhibit among the tiniest genomes in prokaryotes. The large host spectrum of facultative symbionts and the high diversity of strategies they use to infect new hosts probably impact the evolution of their genome and explain why they undergo less severe genomic erosion than obligate symbionts.

In two experiments, we examined the effect of modifications to the features of a stick-and-tube problem on the stick lengths that adult humans used to solve the problem. In Experiment 1, we examined whether people's tool preferences for retrieving an out-of-reach object in a tube might more closely resemble those reported with laboratory crows if people could modify a single stick to an ideal length to solve the problem. Contrary to when adult humans have selected a tool from a set of ten sticks, asking people to modify a single stick to retrieve an object did not generally result in a stick whose length was related to the object's distance.

Background: Molecular epidemiology is a new scientific discipline which allows to integrate information on the genetic variation of infectious pathogens with their diffusion in a population and its subgroups including, for instance, resistance mutations to antibiotics and antiretrovirals.
