Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) is thought to lead to maladaptive behaviours and dysfunctional decision making, both in the clinical and healthy population. The seminal study reported by Luhmann and collaborators in 2011 showed that IU was negatively associated with choosing a delayed, but more certain and valuable, reward over choosing an immediate, but less certain and valuable, reward. These findings have been widely disseminated across the field of personality and individual differences because of their relevance to understand the role of IU in maladaptive behaviours in anxiety-related disorders.

Antibiotic residues can reach aquatic ecosystems through urban wastewater discharges, posing an ecotoxicological risk for aquatic organisms and favoring the development of bacterial resistance. To assess the emission rate and hazardousness of these compounds, it is important to carry out periodic chemical monitoring campaigns that provide information regarding the actual performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the potential impact of the treated wastewater in the aquatic environment. In this study, 18 of the most widely consumed antibiotics in Spain were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in both influent (IWW) and effluent wastewater (EWW) samples collected over four seasons along 2021-2022.

Extinction training has proved effective to diminish the expectancy of the aversive unconditioned stimulus (US). However, the negative valence of the conditioned stimulus (CS) may still stay intact. In fact, several studies have suggested that the CS negative valence may be a factor that promotes the return of fear.

Objective: This study aims to build a multistate model and describe a predictive tool for estimating the daily number of intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital beds occupied by patients with coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19).

Material And Methods: The estimation is based on the simulation of patient trajectories using a multistate model where the transition probabilities between states are estimated via competing risks and cure models. The input to the tool includes the dates of COVID-19 diagnosis, admission to hospital, admission to ICU, discharge from ICU and discharge from hospital or death of positive cases from a selected initial date to the current moment.

Excessive avoidance is a key feature of pathological anxiety. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the development of excessive avoidance are still unknown. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that excessive avoidance, especially in individuals with high Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) is aimed at distress reduction via the enhancement of subjective perceived control in uncertain-threat environments.

This brief report evaluates the early effect of ultra-low dose 0.005% oestriol vaginal gel on dyspareunia in postmenopausal women within the first 2 weeks of treatment. This was a prospective and multicentre single-arm pilot study and the effect of the treatment on dyspareunia was evaluated by using a diary.

Fear extinction is not permanent but is instead more vulnerable than the original fear memory, as traditionally shown by the return of fear phenomena. Because of this, techniques to mitigate the return of fear are needed in the clinical treatment of related psychological conditions. One promising strategy is the occasional reinforced extinction treatment, introducing a gradual and sparse number of conditioned stimulus-unconditioned stimulus (CS-US) pairings within the extinction treatment.

IgG4-related disease is an immune-mediated fibro-inflammatory disorder with multisystemic involvement. Aortitis and peri-aortitis are the most common cardiovascular manifestations of the disease. We present the case of a 65-year-old man with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis and concomitant IgG4 aortitis.

Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) characterized by atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), loss of photoreceptors, and disruption of choriocapillaris. Excessive light exposure is toxic to the retina and is a known risk factor for AMD. We first investigated the effects of blue light-induced phototoxicity on RPE and photoreceptors in nonhuman primates (NHPs, a model of progressive retinal degeneration) and then evaluated the potential cyto- and neuroprotective effects of the brimonidine drug delivery system (Brimo DDS).

Reward affects our attention to stimuli, prioritizing those that lead to high-value outcomes. Recently, it has been suggested that such reward-related cognitive prioritization might be associated with the process of learning new stimulus-response (S-R) associations, because both are acquired through extended reward training, and once established, they are hard to overcome. We used event-related potentials (ERP) to analyze the contribution of S-R links to the formation of reward-related cognitive prioritization during reinforcement learning.

Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), in which local inflammation and hyperactivity of the complement pathway have been implicated in its pathophysiology. This study explores whether any surrogate biomarkers are specifically associated with GA. Plasma from subjects with GA, intermediate dry AMD and non-AMD control were evaluated in 2 cohorts.

A major problem with dietary assessments is their subjective nature. Untargeted metabolomics and new technologies can shed light on this issue and provide a more complete picture of dietary intake by measuring the profile of metabolites in biological samples. Oranges are one of the most consumed fruits in the world, and therefore one of the most studied for their properties.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Brimonidine Drug Delivery System (Brimo DDS), a biodegradable intravitreal implant, in the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration.

Methods: Phase 2, randomized, multicenter, double-masked, 24-month study. Study eyes were treated (Day 1; Month 6 retreatment) with Brimo DDS 132 µg (n = 49), Brimo DDS 264 µg (n = 41), or sham procedure (n = 23).

Reward-learning theory views habits as stimulus-response links formed through extended reward training. Accordingly, animal research has shown that actions that are initially goal-directed can become habitual after operant overtraining. However, a similar demonstration is absent in human research, which poses a serious problem for translational models of behavior.

Background And Objectives: Excessive maladaptive avoidance has been claimed to be one of the mechanisms through which intolerance of uncertainty (IU) may play its causal role in the development and maintenance of several anxiety and compulsive disorders. Consistently, Flores et al. (2018) found that individuals with higher Prospective IU (P-IU), a specific IU subfactor, display excessive avoidance response repetitions in a free-operant discriminative task to avoid an aversive noise.

Background: Biological databases and repositories are incrementing in diversity and complexity over the years. This rapid expansion of current and new sources of biological knowledge raises serious problems of data accessibility and integration. To handle the growing necessity of unification, CellBase was created as an integrative solution.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoporosis is a bone disease that increases fracture risk, and this study looked at how three fortified dairy products could affect bone mass in premenopausal women.
  • The trial lasted 18 months, involving 210 participants who underwent regular tests to measure bone density and other markers.
  • Results showed a decrease in bone mass at most sites, but a notable increase in lumbar spine T-score and Z-score, suggesting improved bone health, particularly linked to increased levels of a specific bone resorption marker (TRAP) after dairy product intake.

The accuracy and sensitivity of high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) enables the identification of candidate compounds with the use of mass spectrometric databases among other tools. However, retention time (RT) data in identification workflows has been sparingly used since it could be strongly affected by matrix or chromatographic performance. Retention Time Interpolation scaling (RTi) strategies can provide a more robust and valuable information than RT, gaining more confidence in the identification of candidate compounds in comparison to an analytical standard.

Activation of the alternative complement cascade has been implicated in the pathogenesis of age related macular degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amyloid β (Aβ), a component of drusen, may promote complement activation by inhibiting CFI bioactivity. We determined whether Aβ reduced CFI bioactivity and whether antibodies against Aβ including a monoclonal antibody, GSK933776 could restore CFI bioactivity.
