Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) in Amazonas, Brazil, focusing on its correlation with the Human Development Index (MHDI) and deforestation between 2016 and 2020.
  • The research analyzed data from 62 municipalities, identifying a total of 7,499 ACL cases, mostly affecting males aged 20-39, with a noted concentration in areas experiencing high deforestation.
  • Findings suggest that high incidence rates of ACL are linked to specific municipalities, particularly Rio Preto da Eva and Presidente Figueiredo, with results highlighting the need for targeted prevention strategies in response to the disease's association with deforestation.

Article Synopsis
  • Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has been spreading variably across Brazil, and its impact in São José do Rio Preto (SJdRP) is studied to understand the low incidence of reported cases, despite the potential for underdiagnosis due to overlapping symptoms with other viruses like dengue.
  • A study involving 341 asymptomatic individuals over four years showed an increase in anti-CHIKV IgG seroconversion from 0.35% to 2.3%, and 4.4% of dengue-suspected individuals tested positive for anti-CHIKV IgM during a 2019 outbreak.
  • Genomic analysis confirmed the presence of the ECSA genotype of CHIKV in SJd

Background: There is evidence that exposure to traffic-related air pollution is related to the incidence of and mortality associated with lung cancer. The aim of this study was to perform a spatial analysis, with a Bayesian approach, to test the hypothesis that high traffic density is associated with increased respiratory tract cancer incidence and mortality risk among individuals over 20 years of age residing in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.

Methods: We employed data from two different databases: the São Paulo Municipal Population-Based Cancer Registry (2002-2011 cancer incidence data); and the Mortality Database of the São Paulo Municipal Health Department (2002-2013 cancer mortality data).
