Modification of soil food webs by land management may alter the response of ecosystem processes to climate extremes, but empirical support is limited and the mechanisms involved remain unclear. Here we quantify how grassland management modifies the transfer of recent photosynthates and soil nitrogen through plants and soil food webs during a post-drought period in a controlled field experiment, using in situ C and N pulse-labelling in intensively and extensively managed fields. We show that intensive management decrease plant carbon (C) capture and its transfer through components of food webs and soil respiration compared to extensive management.

Selective regional iron accumulation is a hallmark of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The underlying mechanisms of neuronal iron dyshomeostasis have been studied, mainly in a gene-by-gene approach. However, recent high-content phenotypic screens using CRISPR/Cas9-based gene perturbations allow for the identification of new pathways that contribute to iron accumulation in neuronal cells.

Relationship Between Maximal Left Ventricular Wall Thickness and Sudden Cardiac Death in Childhood Onset Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

Background: Maximal left ventricular wall thickness (MLVWT) is a risk factor for sudden cardiac death (SCD) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). In adults, the severity of left ventricular hypertrophy has a nonlinear relationship with SCD, but it is not known whether the same complex relationship is seen in childhood. The aim of this study was to describe the relationship between left ventricular hypertrophy and SCD risk in a large international pediatric HCM cohort.

The value of sentinel lymph-node biopsy after neoadjuvant therapy: an overview.

Purpose: We conducted a systematic review to analyse the performance of the sentinel lymph-node biopsy (SLNB) after the neoadjuvant chemotherapy, compared to axillary lymph-node dissection, in terms of false-negative rate (FNR) and sentinel lymph-node identification rate (SLNIR), sensitivity, negative predictive value (NPV), need for axillary lymph-node dissection (ALND), morbidity, preferences, and costs.

Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and The Cochrane Library were searched. We assessed the quality of the included systematic reviews using AMSTAR2 tool, and estimated the degree of overlapping of the individual studies on the included reviews.

Influence of Build Orientation, Chamber Temperature and Infill Pattern on Mechanical Properties of 316L Parts Manufactured by Bound Metal Deposition.

Bound Metal Deposition (BMD) is an alternative to the most common additive manufacturing (AM) technology for metal parts, Powder Bed Fusion (PBF), since the equipment used is more affordable and there are no risks due to exposure to loose powder and lasers or beams. However, the mechanical properties of parts manufactured by BMD are generally lower than those of PBF, making it necessary to study the process parameters to improve their performance. The aim of this work was to analyse the effect of different process parameters on the mechanical properties of 316L parts manufactured by BMD based on a set of specially designed experiments.

Background: Thyroid metastases are extremely rare, with an incidence of 1-3% according to different data. Colon cancer is the second most common tumor that metastasizes to this organ.

Ecologists have long debated the properties that confer stability to complex, species-rich ecological networks. Species-level soil food webs are large and structured networks of central importance to ecosystem functioning. Here, we conducted an analysis of the stability properties of an up-to-date set of theoretical soil food web models that account both for realistic levels of species richness and the most recent views on the topological structure (who is connected to whom) of these food webs.

Clinical and therapeutic management of a pleural fibrous tumor with ALK translocation.

We present a clinical case of a solitary fibrous pleural tumor (TFSP) with abnormal behavior due to its high aggressiveness and poor short-term prognosis, where an ALK translocation was identified. TFSP is an infrequent tumor, with an estimated incidence of around 8 per 100,000 inhabitants and with few cases reported in the literature. The most common is that it is a neoplasm of benign behavior, with debut as a localized mass and whose The treatment of choice is surgical resection.

Approximately 600,000 people work as recycling material collectors in Brazil and few studies evaluate the health risks involved in this occupation. The objective was to evaluate the blood levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) among workers from recycling sorting facilities (RSF) in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil, compare the results with a non-occupationally exposed population, and identify factors associated with higher blood metal levels. Four RSF were selected and 226 collectors were examined for their blood metal levels and associated factors.

Theory suggests that more complex food webs promote stability and can buffer the effects of perturbations, such as drought, on soil organisms and ecosystem functions. Here, we tested experimentally how soil food web trophic complexity modulates the response to drought of soil functions related to carbon cycling and the capture and transfer below-ground of recent photosynthate by plants. We constructed experimental systems comprising soil communities with one, two or three trophic levels (microorganisms, detritivores and predators) and subjected them to drought.

Genotype and phenotype landscape of MEN2 in 554 medullary thyroid cancer patients: the BrasMEN study.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease caused by RET gene germline mutations that is characterized by medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) associated with other endocrine tumors. Several reports have demonstrated that the RET mutation profile may vary according to the geographical area. In this study, we collected clinical and molecular data from 554 patients with surgically confirmed MTC from 176 families with MEN2 in 18 different Brazilian centers to compare the type and prevalence of RET mutations with those from other countries.

Prevalence and factors associated with fatigue in female patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of fatigue in our cohort as well as the factors to which it is associated, its relationship with demographic variables, vitamin D levels, treatment, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) symptoms and disease activity.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out including 102 consecutive female patients with SLE (American College of Rheumatology 1997 criteria) who attended the Parc de Salut Mar between January 2012 and May 2014. Variables collected were: sociodemographic data, vitamin D supplementation, fatigue VAS, pharmacological treatment, main serological markers of SLE, and plasma levels of 25(OH)-vitD.

Abscessed Inguinal Metastasis of Testicular Tumor. Case Report.

The testicular tumor metastatic spread via the lymphatic system, and the anatomical distribution of this, finds his target in the retroperitoneal nodes. Male patient 28 years old with a history of bilateral orchidopexy is presented. It was performed a left orchiectomy and a biopsy of the ulcerated right inguinal mass, with diagnosis of malignant teratoma.
