Article Synopsis
  • Climate change is causing shifts in animal habitats, particularly affecting the distribution of threatened marine species like whale sharks.
  • Projections indicate that by 2100, whale sharks could lose more than 50% of their core habitat in some areas, with significant geographic shifts that could place them in closer proximity to large ships.
  • The increase in whale shark interaction with shipping is expected to be dramatically higher under high emission scenarios compared to sustainable development, highlighting the urgency for better climate-threat predictions in conservation strategies for endangered marine life.

The expansion of the world's merchant fleet poses a great threat to the ocean's biodiversity. Collisions between ships and marine megafauna can have population-level consequences for vulnerable species. The Endangered whale shark (Rhincodon typus) shares a circumglobal distribution with this expanding fleet and tracking of movement pathways has shown that large vessel collisions pose a major threat to the species.

Reef corals have been threatened by climate change, with more frequent and intense bleaching events leading to extensive coral mortality and loss of coral cover worldwide. In the face of this, the corals' photosymbiont assemblages have received special attention as a key to better understand the bleaching process and its recovery. To assess the effects of thermal anomalies, the coral Mussismilia harttii and the hydrocoral Millepora alcicornis were monitored through the El Niño 2015/2016 at a Southwestern Atlantic (SWA) coral reef.

Breast cancer is a major health burden, and up to one-third of patients with breast cancer develop brain metastases, which are linked to a very poor prognosis. Few biomarkers are available to predict the prognosis of patients with metastases. Assessment by immunohistochemistry may be used as a tool to predict the behavior of these tumors.

High-grade B-cell lymphoma (HGBL) with rearrangements of and and/or called double and triple-hit lymphomas (DTH-HGBL), are lymphoid malignancies with inferior outcomes when treated with standard chemotherapy. The identification of DTH-HGBL cases is challenging, considering their variable clinical, morphologic, and immunohistochemical features. : Retrospective revision of medical data of patients diagnosed with DTH-HGBL confirmed by FISH, between January 2010 and January 2020, in three Tertiary Portuguese Hospitals (Coimbra Hospital and University Center, Portuguese Oncology Institute - Coimbra and Portuguese Oncology Institute - Porto).

Knowledge of the three-dimensional movement patterns of elasmobranchs is vital to understand their ecological roles and exposure to anthropogenic pressures. To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species.

Marine traffic is increasing globally yet collisions with endangered megafauna such as whales, sea turtles, and planktivorous sharks go largely undetected or unreported. Collisions leading to mortality can have population-level consequences for endangered species. Hence, identifying simultaneous space use of megafauna and shipping throughout ranges may reveal as-yet-unknown spatial targets requiring conservation.

Case Summary: A 10-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat from Quilmes (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina) presented at the Infectious Diseases and Parasitology Unit with a hyperpigmented nodule of 5 cm diameter on the nasal plane with a small ulceration of more than 1 year's evolution. A scaly and hyperpigmented alopecic lesion of 3 cm in diameter was found on the lower edge of the tail. The patient was under immunosuppressive therapy with corticosteroids for lymphoplasmacytic duodenitis.

Article Synopsis
  • * Data was collected using the LHCb detector with a total of 6 fb^{-1} at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.
  • * An increase in the fraction of charm jets is noted at higher rapidity levels of the Z boson, suggesting the presence of an intrinsic charm component within the proton.

The current trend of lowering 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) dietary exposure is challenging since its formation is parallel with the development of food color, flavor and aroma. We aimed to investigate the effect of gallic acid (GA) addition on 5-HMF formation, color development and antioxidant activity (AA) in a series of Maillard Reaction (MR) model systems. The effects of GA addition on browning and AA development were not uniform for all model systems, but always occurred in the same direction, indicating that these phenomena were interconnected.

A 37-year-old nulliparous woman with abnormal uterine bleeding and a uterine mass suggestive of a leiomyoma not responding to medical therapy was submitted to two hysteroscopies with histological analysis. The first one showed a 'leiomyoma' and the second a 'uterine smooth muscle tumour of uncertain malignant potential/epithelioid leiomyosarcoma, with positivity for hormonal receptors'. The patient was submitted to a total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and the microscopic examination of the tumour revealed a 'uterine tumour resembling ovarian sex-cord tumours'.

We present an angular analysis of the B^{+}→K^{*+}(→K_{S}^{0}π^{+})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay using 9  fb^{-1} of pp collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. For the first time, the full set of CP-averaged angular observables is measured in intervals of the dimuon invariant mass squared. Local deviations from standard model predictions are observed, similar to those in previous LHCb analyses of the isospin-partner B^{0}→K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay.

Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries.

Article Synopsis
  • CCL16 is a pro-inflammatory chemokine important for attracting immune cells, but it appears to be a pseudogene in most leporid (rabbit and hare) species due to mutations.
  • In studies of various species, it's found that leporids have significant mutations that prevent CCL16 from functioning, while some Ochotonidae (pikas) still retain a potentially functional version of the gene.
  • The evolution of CCL16 suggests that it was once functional in their common ancestor, but underwent pseudogenization in some lineages, indicating variations in evolutionary pressures within the Glires group.
