Self-Reported Competence and Impact of Research Training among Medical Radiography Graduates from a Developing Country.

Introduction: Research output from radiographers in developing countries is generally low. This could be attributable to a lack of basic research skills. One way of improving this is research training for undergraduate radiography students.

The intricate relationship between a medical school and a teaching hospital: A case study in Uganda.

Background: The relationship between medical schools and teaching hospitals is full of opportunities but also challenges even though they have complementary goals that could enhance each other. Although medical schools and teaching hospitals may face some similar challenges around the world, there could be context-specific observations that differ in resource-rich versus resource-limited settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that are perceived to have influenced the relationship between a medical school and a teaching hospital in Uganda, a resource-limited setting.

Current knowledge, attitudes and practices of women on breast cancer and mammography at Mulago Hospital.

Background: Breast cancer is the third commonest cancer in Ugandan women. Women present late for breast cancer management which leads to high mortality rates. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Ugandan women concerning breast cancer and mammography.

A Student Portfolio: The Golden Key to Reflective, Experiential, and Evidence-based Learning.

Introduction: In 2003, the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, changed its curriculum from a traditional one to a student-centred problem-based/community-based type for all undergraduate students. Since then, radiography students have been using a logbook to record their learning experiences. However, the logbook shows only a daily record of numbers of examinations done, with neither increased understanding nor reflection.

Utilisation of obstetric sonography at a peri-urban health centre in Uganda.

Background: Maternal mortality is related to obstetric complications in pregnancy some of which could be revealed by obstetric sonography. Obstetric sonography has become part of routine antenatal care in both urban and rural settings. The objective of the study was to assess the utilization of obstetric sonography in a rural hospital of Uganda, including the frequency and appropriateness of its usage as well as determine whether there was any relation between number of obstetric scans, patient management and obstetric outcomes.

Background: Ultrasound has become a routine part of care for pregnant women in Uganda, being one of a range of techniques used in screening. However, it differs from most others because it allows women to view their babies. Routine obstetric sonography is now globally recognized as one of the ways through which maternal mortality can be reduced.
