Introduction: Exercise is being incorporated into the treatment of patients on hemodialysis; however, little is known about the major characteristics of these interventions.
Objective: To describe the exercise protocols prescribed for hemodialysis patients in Brazil.
Methods: A scoping review was conducted following JBI and Prisma-ScR guidelines.
Background: Respiratory sarcopenia is characterized by the weakness of respiratory muscles associated with sarcopenia due to aging or systemic diseases such as chronic kidney disease (CKD). Patients with CKD undergoing dialysis are particularly susceptible to respiratory muscle weakness caused by factors such as fluid overload and electrolyte imbalance. This weakness not only affects ventilation but also impairs oxygen uptake and delivery to muscle tissue, potentially leading to severe sarcopenia.

We aimed to evaluate the association between severely low CRF and all-cause mortality risk in HD patients.
Methods: This observational prospective cohort study followed-up patients receiving HD from August 2015 until March 2022.
Background: Evidence comparing different exercise modalities in individuals undergoing hemodialysis remains incipient. Our aim was to conduct a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials to compare and synthesize the efficacy of five different intradialytic exercise modalities and home-based training in this population.
Design, Setting, Participants, And Measurements: Studies were searched in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, Cinahl, and Scopus from their inception to 19 September 2022.
Background: Exercise is important for patients on hemodialysis, but details and descriptions on how it is prescribed are lacking. We reviewed the existing literature and described how exercise is being prescribed for patients on hemodialysis.
Methods: A scoping review according to the JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidelines was conducted.

Purpose: To evaluate the estimated pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PASP) through transthoracic echocardiography in hemodialysis (HD) patients and associate it with cardiorespiratory fitness and pulmonary function.
Methods: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of HD patients that performed evaluations of cardiac function, cardiorespiratory fitness, and pulmonary function, through transthoracic echocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise test, spirometry, and manovacuometry, respectively. All patients underwent the evaluations on a non-dialysis day.
Background: The arteriovenous fistula is the main vascular access in hemodialysis. Arteriovenous fistula access is generally evaluated by a vascular surgeon after 2 weeks of its surgery, however, exercise programs may begin earlier for improving outcomes. Therefore, we propose this guide with simple, but potentially effective exercises, using low-cost materials that can be safely performed by the patients at home or in the dialysis center.

Methods: The survey was sent to physiotherapists and exercise physiologists working in IEPs in Brazil. Phone interviews and electronic forms were used to collect the answers to the survey questionnaire.
Introduction: A healthy arteriovenous fistula (AVF) depends on adequate vessel diameter which can be maintained through aerobic exercises. A randomized crossover study was conducted to evaluate the acute effects of aerobic exercise on a cycle ergometer on AVF vascular diameter, through ultrasound, and on blood pressure (BP).
Methods: Eight hemodialysis (HD) patients completed 2 different occasions in random order with a 7-day washout: (a) exercising moment, in which 30-min aerobic exercise was performed on a cycle ergometer; and (b) resting moment, which was performed 30-min with the patient sitting in a chair.
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a factor that predisposes to gradual physical deconditioning from its early stages leading to cardiorespiratory fitness and musculoskeletal system impairment. We evaluated the effects of combined and periodized intradialytic exercise training on cardiopulmonary fitness and respiratory function in HD subjects.
Methods: A randomized controlled trial with HD subjects was allocated into two groups: exercise group (EXG) and usual care group (UCG).
Background: The arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a commonly used vascular access for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients; exercise interventions may boost its maturation and help in its maintenance. A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials on the effects of upper limb exercise programs on the AVF was conducted.
Methods: The primary outcomes were draining vein diameter (DVD) and draining vein blood flow rate (DVBFR), and secondary outcomes were handgrip strength (HGS) and brachial artery flow rate (BAFR).
The C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) plays a role in the immunopathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Exercise has anti-inflammatory properties that may contribute to the rehabilitation of CKD patients. To date, the impact of the intradialytic exercise on CCR5 expression in monocytes and lymphocytes of CKD patients is unknown.

The evaluation of exercise capacity is essential to manage this disease. This study aims to determine the within-subject repeatability of two Six Minute Walk Test (6MWT) in adults with NCFB.

The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials on the effects of different intradialytic exercise protocols on cardiopulmonary capacity in chronic kidney disease patients. The primary outcome was peak oxygen consumption (VO) and the secondary outcomes were exercise duration and ventilation in the cardiopulmonary test.

Methods: Nine patients were submitted to a single bout of 20-min intradialytic exercise and a control hemodialysis (HD) session with an interval of 7 days between them. Peripheral blood sample was collected at baseline, during HD and immediately after HD in each trial to evaluate the peripheral frequency of NK cells and their subsets (CD3-CD56 and CD3-CD56), systemic cortisol concentrations, C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase activity (CK), and urea and creatinine levels.
Introduction: Hemodialysis contributes to increased oxidative stress and induces transitory hypoxemia. Compartmentalization decreases the supply of solutes to the dialyzer during treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of intradialytic aerobic exercise on solute removal, blood gases and oxidative stress in patients with chronic kidney disease during a single hemodialysis session.

By 2050, the number of Brazilians living in urban areas will be over 200 million and 29% of the population will be elderly. The long-lived elderly are 80 or more years old and the young elderly are between 60 and 79 years of age. The scope of this article was to verify the difference in perception between the young elderly and the long-lived elderly from Rio Grande do Sul (RS) about the urban environment they live in.
