Purpose: In patients with inner ear schwannomas (IES), reports on hearing rehabilitation with cochlear implants (CI) have increased over the past decade, most of which are case reports or small case series. The aim of this study is to systematically review the reported hearing results with CI in patients with IES considering the different audiologic outcome measures used in different countries.

Methods: According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline, a search of published literature was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • Preservation of function is crucial when surgically treating cochleovestibular schwannomas, and this study highlights successful outcomes in a specific case.
  • A 61-year-old male with a history of left-sided deafness and vertigo undergoes total tumor removal, which also includes complete cochlectomy, but his vestibular function remains intact and vertigo symptoms resolve.
  • The findings suggest that vestibular function can be preserved even after complete cochlear removal, supporting surgical approaches for transmodiolar schwannomas with limited extension.

Purpose: Peripheral facial nerve palsy is a severely disabling condition. In current clinical practice, the commonest tools to assess facial palsy are grading scales, digital face image analyses or facial muscle electrophysiology. However, these techniques suffer from subjectivity or invasiveness and cannot be applied as part of a routine clinical assessment.

Background: Since both surgery and more conservative treatments show long-term outcomes in patients with VS, the current challenge in its therapeutic strategy is to offer a cure with lower functional morbidity in terms of facial and hearing preservation or the possibility of hearing rehabilitation with a cochlear implant.

Methods: PubMed and Scopus databases were searched from 2017 to November 2022. Fifteen articles met our selection criteria: (1) patients with a diagnosis of VS, either sporadic or NF2-related; (2) simultaneous or sequential cochlear implantation; (3) specified audiological test results and follow-up timing.
