Thioredoxin Interacting Protein Expressed in Osteoblasts Mediates the Anti-Proliferative Effects of High Glucose and Modulates the Expression of Osteocalcin.

Background: Hyperglycemia is associated with impaired bone health in patients with diabetes mellitus. Although a direct detrimental effect of hyperglycemia on the bone has been previously reported, the specific molecular mediator(s) responsible for the inhibitory effect of high glucose levels on the bone remains unclear. We hypothesized that thioredoxin-interacting protein (Txnip), an essential mediator of oxidative stress, is such a mediator.

Intermittent mechanical loading on mouse tibia accelerates longitudinal bone growth by inducing PTHrP expression in the female tibial growth plate.

It is not clear as to whether weight bearing and ambulation may affect bone growth. Our goal was to study the role of mechanical loading (one of the components of ambulation) on endochondral ossification and longitudinal bone growth. Thus, we applied cyclical, biologically relevant strains for a prolonged time period (4 weeks) to one tibia of juvenile mice, while using the contralateral one as an internal control.

A Nutraceutical Combination of Bromelain and Boswellia Serrata Casperome® in Siben®: Effects on the Postoperative Course of Inguinal Hernioplasty with Mesh at One Year Follow up. A Randomized Multicentric Study.

Aim: We investigated the potential benefits of administering a nutraceutical combination of Bromelain (200 mg) and Boswellia serrata Casperome® (200 mg) on post-operative outcomes of hernioplasty with mesh.

Methods: One hundred eighty patients (27 females, 153 males) were enrolled to undergo open tension-free hernioplasty with the use of Progrip®. Patients were randomized to receive either one tablet of Siben® (study group) or placebo (control group) on an empty stomach, every twelve hours for eleven postoperative days.

Objectives: Pheochromocytomas (PHEO) are neuroendocrine tumors rarely diagnosed in children. We are reporting on the management challenges of three adolescent patients who present with hereditary PHEO.

Case Presentation: The index patient and his male sibling presented with bilateral PHEO, while a third patient presented with a unilateral PHEO, all associated with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome.

Interacting spin systems in a magnetic field offer a tantalizing opportunity to test different approaches to study quantum phase transitions. In this work, we exploit the new resources offered by quantum algorithms to detect the quantum critical behavior of fully connected spin-1/2 models.

Specifically, it performs a comparative analysis between before and during the pandemic periods. The data of listed banks are extracted from the BankFocus for 14 Asian emerging markets.

The podocyte is a specialized cell type critically involved in maintaining the selective filtration barrier of the kidney. Podocytes are primary or secondary targets for a multitude of kidney diseases. Despite intense investigation, the transcriptome and proteome of human podocytes remain incompletely characterized.

Induction of SRY box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) has been shown to occur in response to kidney injury in rodents, where SOX9-positive cells proliferate and regenerate the proximal tubules of injured kidneys. Additionally, SOX9-positive cells demonstrate a capacity to differentiate toward other nephron segments. Here, we characterized the role of SOX9 in normal and injured human kidneys.

[Chest pain in children: a practical approach].

Chest pain presenting during childhood is a common cause of admission to the emergency departments or to pediatric outpatient consultations. In most cases chest pain is idiopathic or secondary to musculoskeletal disorders, whereas a cardiac origin is confirmed in a minority (0.5-1%).

Background: Sodium intake is known to contribute to the development of hypertension, thus intake reduction is a cornerstone in the prevention and management of hypertension. The increase in renal sodium excretion might represent a further potential preventive and/or therapeutic opportunity.

Objective: To explore the working hypothesis that an increased fluid intake can improve renal sodium handling towards a decrease in blood pressure.

A number of chemical messengers, such as various hormones and hormone-like substances, along with neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, are directly or indirectly linked with the encoding of social behavior via their action at the amygdala, hippocampus, and other related brain structures known to be involved in different aspects of social development. It is thought that any imbalance in the secretion and action of these chemicals may lead to defective or abnormal social behaviors that are the hallmarks of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Many of the studies have described an association between ASDs and endocrine dysfunction, but have failed to establish a cause-effect connection between these 2 conditions.

Regulatory role of NF-κB in growth plate chondrogenesis and its functional interaction with Growth Hormone.

Nuclear Factor kappa B (NF-kB) is a family of transcription factors that participates in the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis. Impaired NF-kB activity appears to be involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory states, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Genetic manipulation in mice leading to impaired NF-kB function is associated with abnormal limb development and delayed bone growth.

Flow Cytometry Characterization of Pluripotent Transmembrane Glycoproteins on Resident Cervix Uteri Cells in Patients Screened for Cervical Cancer.

The aim of this study was to characterize both by flow cytometry analysis and immunohistochemistry cervix uteri cells of women screened for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in comparison to a group without CIN by using mesenchymal stem cell-like and hematopoietic lineage markers. A significant expression for CD29, CD38, HLA-I, and HLA-II was correlated positively to the CIN degree and it was more relevant in patients positive for human papilloma virus (HPV). Thus, identification and detailed characterization of pluripotent resident in cells could be a promising therapeutic target.

Multiple office blood pressure measurement: a novel approach to overcome the weak cornerstone of blood pressure measurement in children. Data from the SPA project.

Background: This contribution aims to report and analyze a novel approach for office blood pressure measurement in children.

Methods: Healthy children 5 to 8 years of age were eligible. After 5 minutes rest, 10 unattended blood pressure readings were taken at 3-minute intervals using a validated automated oscillometric device.

Neutron spin echo monitoring of segmental-like diffusion of water confined in the cores of carbon nanotubes.

Following the stream of increasing scientific interest in condensed-matter systems under ultra-hydrophobic confinement, the present work reports the first incoherent neutron spin echo assessment of the dynamics of water axially confined inside single-wall carbon nanotubes of diameter d∼ 1.4 nm. At the time scale of nanoseconds, two water populations are retrieved, whose relative proportion matches the one expected for a concentric shell + chain arrangement with cylindrical symmetry.
