Article Synopsis
  • Acral warts, common on hands and feet, can be treated with conventional photodynamic therapy (C-PDT), which has been effective and safe for both adults and children, but the efficacy of daylight photodynamic therapy (DL-PDT) is still unclear.
  • A study involving 68 patients aimed to compare the short- and long-term effects of C-PDT and DL-PDT using 10% aminolevulinic acid (ALA) on hand warts, with evaluations of responses occurring at 3 months and 1 year post-treatment.
  • Results showed that both treatments were generally effective and well-tolerated, with a majority of patients experiencing excellent responses; however, a notable percentage had warts relapse a year later

  • Necrobiosis Lipoidica (NL) is a rare skin condition that causes yellowish-brown plaques, mostly affecting middle-aged women on their shins, and is marked by inflammation and collagen degeneration.
  • A study conducted on 17 NL patients treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT) from 2013 to 2023 showed varied treatment outcomes, with 29% achieving complete lesion clearance and 59% experiencing partial clearance.
  • The findings highlight the need for personalized treatment approaches and standardized protocols to improve the effectiveness of PDT for NL, as current evidence in literature is limited.

Immunosenescence is a complex multifactorial phenomenon consisting of wide-ranging remodeling of the immune system during the life span, resulting in an age-related qualitative-quantitative decline of immune cells and cytokines. A growing body of evidence in the international literature is highlighting the etiopathogenetic role of skin immunosenescence in the onset of various dermatologic conditions. Skin immunosenescence also serves as an interesting watershed for the onset of system-wide conditions in the context of allergic inflammation.
