Introduction: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent, multifactorial form of hair loss involving complex aetiological factors, such as altered androgen regulation and energy metabolism. Existing treatments offer limited success, thus highlighting the need for advanced, personalised therapeutic strategies. This study focuses on correlating the genetic mechanisms of AGA with molecular targets involved in the response to current treatment modalities.

Comparison of Hounsfield Units within the Humeral Trochlea and Medial Coronoid Process in a Population of Labrador X Golden Retriever Guide Dogs and Border Collies.

Objective:  The aim of this study was to determine if variations in Hounsfield units (HU) are present within the elbow between asymptomatic dogs of two breeds of dogs susceptible to elbow dysplasia.

Study Design:  Guide Dogs and Border Collies that presented for routine computed tomography (CT) screening for elbow dysplasia prior to breeding were evaluated. All dogs had no documented history of lameness.

Background: Implant-based immediate approach remains to be a first line option for reconstruction of mastectomy defects. When combined with post-mastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) two different schemas are possible: radiating the temporary tissue expander (TTE) or the permanent implant (PI). The present article intends to be the biggest cohort meta-analysis to the date comparing reconstructive failure (RF) rate in these two scenarios: PMRT to TE compared with PMRT to PI.

The Differential Organization of F-Actin Alters the Distribution of Organelles in Cultured When Compared to Native Chromaffin Cells.

Cultured bovine chromaffin cells have been used extensively as a neuroendocrine model to study regulated secretion. In order to extend such experimental findings to the physiological situation, it is necessary to study mayor cellular structures affecting secretion in cultured cells with their counterparts present in the adrenomedullary tissue. F-actin concentrates in a peripheral ring in cultured cells, as witnessed by phalloidin-rodhamine labeling, while extends throughout the cytoplasm in native cells.

Impact of a smoking cessation lifestyle intervention on vascular mechanics in young women.

We tested the hypotheses that smoking-induced changes in vascular mechanics would be detected earlier in the lumped properties of peripheral vascular beds, which include the properties of microvasculature, than in the local properties of central conduits, and that such changes are reversible with lifestyle changes that include smoking cessation and exercise. Vascular measures were made in 53 young (18-40 years) female smokers and 25 age-matched non-smokers. Twenty-two of the smokers were tested before and after a 14-week smoking cessation program and, of these, 13 were tested again after 52 weeks of smoking cessation.

Sonographic features of gastrointestinal lymphoma in 15 dogs.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to describe the sonographic appearance of lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract in dogs.

Method: A retrospective review was conducted and patients with gastrointestinal lymphoma diagnosed by histopathology (including immunohistochemistry, where available) or cytology that had an abdominal ultrasound were included.

Results: Four of 15 (26·7%) cases with histopathologically confirmed lymphoma exhibited no sonographic abnormalities.

It has been proposed recently that the F-actin cytoskeleton organizes the relative disposition of the SNARE proteins and calcium channels that form part of the secretory machinery in chromaffin cells, a neurosecretory model. To test this idea, we used confocal microscopy do determine if DsRed-SNAP-25 microdomains, which define the final sites of exocytosis along with syntaxin-1, preferentially remain in contact with F-actin cortical structures labelled by lifeact-EGFP. A quantitative analysis showed that in cells over-expressing these constructs there is a preferential colocalization, rather than a random distribution of SNAP-25 patches.

Non-alpha-adrenergic effects on systemic vascular conductance during lower-body negative pressure, static exercise and muscle metaboreflex activation.

Aim: This study tested the hypothesis that non-α-adrenergic mechanisms contribute to systemic vascular conductance (SVC) in a reflex-specific manner during the sympathoexcitatory manoeuvres.

Methods: Twelve healthy subjects underwent lower-body negative pressure (LBNP, -40 mmHg) as well as static handgrip exercise (HG, 20% of maximal force) followed by post-exercise forearm circulatory occlusion (PECO, 5 min each) with and without α-adrenergic blockade induced by phentolamine (PHE). Aortic blood flow, finger blood pressure and superficial femoral artery blood flow were measured to calculate cardiac output, SVC and leg vascular conductance (LVC) during the last minute of each intervention.

Adrenergic and myogenic regulation of viscoelasticity in the vascular bed of the human forearm.

This study tested the hypothesis that the compliance (C) and viscoelasticity (K) of the forearm vascular bed are controlled by myogenic and/or α-adrenergic receptor (αAR) activation. Heart rate (HR) and waveforms of brachial artery blood pressure (Finometer) and forearm blood flow (Doppler ultrasound) were measured in baseline conditions and during infusion of noradrenaline (NA; αAR agonist), with and without phentolamine (αAR antagonist; n = 10; 6 men and 4 women). These baseline and αAR-agonist-based measures were repeated when the arm was positioned above or below the heart to modify the myogenic stimulus.
