Understanding patterns of cortico-cortical connections in both frequently and infrequently studied species advances our knowledge of cortical organization and evolution. The agouti (Dasyprocta aguti, a medium-size South American rodent) offers a unique opportunity, because of its large lissencephalic brain and its natural behaviors, such as gnawing and hiding seeds, that require bimanual interaction while sitting on its hindlimbs and aligning its head to receive images of the horizon on the retinal visual streak. There have been no previous studies of the intrinsic and extrinsic ipsilateral projections of the agouti's primary somatosensory cortical area (S1).

Mass Balance in Pharmaceutical Stress Testing: A Review of Principles and Practical Applications.

Stress testing (also known as forced degradation) of pharmaceutical drug substances and products is a critical part of the drug development process, providing insight into the degradation pathways of drug substances and drug products. This information is used to support the development of stability-indicating methods (SIMs) capable of detecting pharmaceutically relevant degradation products that might potentially be observed during manufacturing, long-term storage, distribution, and use. Assessing mass balance of stressed samples is a key aspect of developing SIMs and is a regulatory expectation.

Factors associated with oropharyngeal dysphagia in individuals with cardiovascular disease and COVID-19.

Purpose: Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is one of the possible outcomes in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and also in the population hospitalized for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Thus, knowing the predictive risk factors for OD may help with referral and early intervention. This study aimed to verify the association of different factors with OD in hospitalized individuals with cardiovascular disease and COVID-19.

Reduced Body Flexibility Is Associated With Poor Survival in Middle-Aged Men and Women: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Objectives: Flexibility is recognized as one of the components of physical fitness and commonly included as part of exercise prescriptions for all ages. However, limited data exist regarding the relationship between flexibility and survival. We evaluated the sex-specific nature and magnitude of the associations between body flexibility and natural and non-COVID-19 mortality in a middle-aged cohort of men and women.

Effectiveness of CoronaVac in the prevention of COVID-19, a test-negative case-control study in Brazil.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two doses of CoronaVac in preventing SARS-CoV-2 symptomatic disease with virological confirmation, as well as in the prevention of COVID-19 moderate and severe cases. A test-negative unmatched case-control design was used, in which cases were patients with suspected COVID-19 (presenting at least two of the following symptoms: fever, chills, sore throat, headache, cough, runny nose, olfactory or taste disorders) with virological confirmation, and controls were those whose SARS-CoV-2 test was negative. As for exposure, participants were classified as unvaccinated, or vaccinated with a complete schedule.

(-)-Carvone, a ketone monoterpene, is the main component of essential oils from several medicinal plants and has been reported to have anti-arthriric, anticonvulsive, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and immunomodulatory effects. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the spasmolytic activity of (-)-carvone in rodent models. The isolated virgin rat uterus was mounted in an organ bath apparatus, and the relaxing effect of ( -)-carvone and its mechanism of action were evaluated in tonic contractions induced by carbachol, KCl, PGF, or oxytocin.

Psychological stress and cardiovascular risk among women in Brazilian communities: a cross-sectional study.

Psychosocial evaluations are rarely conducted with community-dwelling individuals, especially those with higher risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aims to evaluate the perceptual stress and cardiovascular risk among women in a large cross-sectional study performed in Brazilian communities. Subjects aged over 18 years were included out of 500 public basic health units (BHU) in Brazil.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was first associated with Central Nervous System (CNS) infections in Brazil in 2015, correlated with an increased number of newborns with microcephaly, which ended up characterizing the Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). Here, we investigated the impact of ZIKV infection on the functionality of iPSC-derived astrocytes. Besides, we extrapolated our findings to a Brazilian cohort of 136 CZS children and validated our results using a mouse model.

Organization of Somatosensory Cortex in the South American Rodent Paca (Cuniculus paca).

Introduction: The study of non-laboratory species has been part of a broader effort to establish the basic organization of the mammalian neocortex, as these species may provide unique insights relevant to cortical organization, function, and evolution.

Methods: In the present study, the organization of three somatosensory cortical areas of the medium-sized (5-11 kg body mass) Amazonian rodent, the paca (Cuniculus paca), was determined using a combination of electrophysiological microelectrode mapping and histochemical techniques (cytochrome oxidase and NADPH diaphorase) in tangential sections.

Results: Electrophysiological mapping revealed a somatotopically organized primary somatosensory cortical area (S1) located in the rostral parietal cortex with a characteristic foot-medial/head-lateral contralateral body surface representation similar to that found in other species.

Pressure tuning reverse martensitic transformation in the MnCoNiGe half-Heusler alloy.

Here we investigate the structural properties of the MnCoNiGe half-Heusler alloys under pressure up to 12 GPa by Synchrotron angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction (XRD). At room temperature and pressure, the compound exhibits only the hexagonal NiIn-type structure. Lowering the temperature to 100 K at ambient pressure induces an almost complete martensitic phase transformation to the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure.

Lipsmacking behaviour, which involves at least two individuals in socially mediated interactions, may tell about processes that maintain, accentuate or attenuate emotional exchanges in monkeys. Lipsmacking is a facial expression associated with the establishment and maintenance of affiliative interactions, following under the 'emotional regulation' umbrella, which accounts for the ability to manage behavioural responses.

Two new species of Sminthurididae, Medeiros & Bellini, and Silva, Medeiros & Bellini, from Piaui state, Brazil, are herein described and illustrated. resembles species of the group, like Bretfeld & Gauer, Bretfeld & Gauer, and Bretfeld & Schulz, by its complex male ventral tube without asymmetrical structures or medial process. However, it differs from them by the combination of the male tibiotarsus III with a leaf-shaped IIpe chaeta and a regular IIIpi chaeta, ventral tube with 1+1 chaetae, and the absence cuticular hooks on the furca.

Lycopene is a carotenoid with potential use in the treatment of chronic illnesses. Here, different formulations of lycopene were studied: lycopene-rich extract from red guava (LEG), purified lycopene from red guava (LPG) and a self-emulsifying drug delivery system loaded with LPG (nanoLPG).
