Role of specific DNA mutations in the peripheral blood of colorectal cancer patients for the assessment of tumor stage and residual disease following tumor resection.

In the present study, the detection of tumor-specific KRAS proto-oncogene, GTPase () and B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase () mutations in the peripheral blood of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients at all stages and adenomas was used for the estimation of disease stage prior to surgery and for residual disease following surgery. A total of 65 CRC patients were enrolled. The primary tumor tested positive for the specific mutations ( mutations in codons 12, 13, 61, 117 or 146 and mutations in codon 600) in 35 patients.

Laparoscopically assisted colorectal surgery provides better short-term clinical and inflammatory outcomes compared to open colorectal surgery.

Introduction: Changes in immune function after surgery may influence overall outcome, length of hospital stay, susceptibility to infection and perioperative tumour dissemination in cancer patients. Our aim was to elaborate on postoperative differences in the immune status and the intensity of the systemic inflammatory response between two groups of prospectively enrolled patients with colorectal cancer, namely patients undergoing laparoscopically assisted or open colorectal surgery.

Material And Methods: Blood samples from 77 patients were taken before surgery and then 3 h, 24 h and 4 days after surgery.

Abdominal surgery process modeling framework for simulation using spreadsheets.

We provide a continuation of the existing Activity Table Modeling methodology with a modular spreadsheets simulation. The simulation model developed is comprised of 28 modeling elements for the abdominal surgery cycle process. The simulation of a two-week patient flow in an abdominal clinic with 75 beds demonstrates the applicability of the methodology.

Laparoscopic rectal resection of deep infiltrating endometriosis.

Purpose: Deep infiltrating endometriosis with colorectal involvement is a complex disorder, often requiring segmental bowel resection. Complete removal of all visible lesions is considered the adequate treatment of infiltrating endometriosis in order to reduce recurrence. In this article, we describe our experience with laparoscopic management of deep infiltrating endometriosis with involvement of the rectum.

Giant T-shaped duplication of the transverse colon. A case report.

A case of long diverticular colonic duplication producing acute abdominal pain in a 6-year-old girl is presented. Physical examination showed no signs of acute abdomen at the initial presentation. After a pain-free interval, there was a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain and a large tumor in the lower abdomen was observed.

Meckel's diverticulum perforation with intraabdominal hemorrhage.

Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum in children is a rare and serious complication. The authors report a case of a 3-year-old boy with perforation and hemoperitoneum caused by Meckel's diverticulum. Difficulty of preoperative diagnosis is discussed, indication for incidental diverticulotomy is established, and the literature is reviewed.
