In the streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rat major increases in noradrenaline concentration and content of the seminal vesicles were evident as early as 7 weeks following induction of hyperglycemia and returned toward normal after 34 weeks of hyperglycemia. There were significant reductions in the concentration and content of dopamine at 19-42 weeks of diabetes, and small occasionally significant reductions in the content of serotonin and adrenaline, particularly around 19-26 weeks after STZ treatment. The uptake of tritiated noradrenaline in the diabetics was increased at 12 weeks compared to the controls, and decreased to control levels with increasing age.

The early impact of feeding on infant breathing-swallowing coordination.

This longitudinal study assessed the coordination of nutritive and non-nutritive swallowing with breathing in 10 healthy term infants from birth to 1 year of age. Swallows were classified into five respiratory-phase categories: mid-inspiration (II), mid-expiration (EE), inspiratory-expiratory cusp (IE), expiratory-inspiratory cusp (EI), and mid-pause (P). Breathing-swallowing coordination differed markedly between the two swallowing conditions, especially between 2 weeks and 2 months.

Introduction: There is little data available to determine the normal response to normobaric hypoxia inhalation testing (NHIT) and air travel. Quantifying a healthy response may assist in the evaluation of passengers considered at risk for air travel. The aims of this study were: (1) to quantify the degree of desaturation in healthy subjects during a NHIT and air travel; and (2) assess the validity of the NHIT when compared with actual in-flight responses.

Objective: This study examined motor impairments over 1 year following mild closed head injury (CHI). It is the first study to serially assess long-term oculomotor and upper-limb visuomotor function following mild head trauma.

Methods: Thirty-seven patients with mild CHI and 37 matched controls were compared at 1 week, 3 months and 6 months and 31 available pairs at 12 months post-injury on measures of saccades, oculomotor smooth pursuit, upper-limb visuomotor function and neuropsychological performance.

Polymorphism at the beta-adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) locus of Merino sheep and its association with lamb mortality.

Beta3-adrenergic receptors are predominantly found on the surface of adipocytes and are major mediators of the lipolytic and thermogenic effects of high catecholamine concentrations. Recently, variation in the ovine beta3-adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) gene has been reported to be associated with lamb survival. In this study, polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorphism analysis of part of the ADRB3 intron was used to genotype 4488 Merino lambs born at 10 farms throughout the South Island of New Zealand.

Comparison of infarct-derived and control ovine cardiac myofibroblasts in culture: response to cytokines and natriuretic peptide receptor expression profiles.

This study investigated whether gene expression profiles of myofibroblasts derived from infarcted myocardium differ from normal cardiac fibroblasts.
