In the streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rat major increases in noradrenaline concentration and content of the seminal vesicles were evident as early as 7 weeks following induction of hyperglycemia and returned toward normal after 34 weeks of hyperglycemia. There were significant reductions in the concentration and content of dopamine at 19-42 weeks of diabetes, and small occasionally significant reductions in the content of serotonin and adrenaline, particularly around 19-26 weeks after STZ treatment. The uptake of tritiated noradrenaline in the diabetics was increased at 12 weeks compared to the controls, and decreased to control levels with increasing age.

In this study, heart failure patients (n=451) were genotyped for the angiotensinogen M235T and T174M polymorphisms to investigate association with survival (recorded over 4 years of follow-up) and prognostic hormone markers. Patients carrying the 235TT genotype (n=86) were 3 years younger at admission (P=0.

This longitudinal study assessed the coordination of nutritive and non-nutritive swallowing with breathing in 10 healthy term infants from birth to 1 year of age. Swallows were classified into five respiratory-phase categories: mid-inspiration (II), mid-expiration (EE), inspiratory-expiratory cusp (IE), expiratory-inspiratory cusp (EI), and mid-pause (P). Breathing-swallowing coordination differed markedly between the two swallowing conditions, especially between 2 weeks and 2 months.

Methods: A prospective, randomized controlled trial was undertaken, with 20 patients assigned to each group. The preoperative and postoperative measures included transrectal ultrasound-assessed prostate volume, postvoid residual urine volume, and urodynamic evaluation findings.

Introduction: There is little data available to determine the normal response to normobaric hypoxia inhalation testing (NHIT) and air travel. Quantifying a healthy response may assist in the evaluation of passengers considered at risk for air travel. The aims of this study were: (1) to quantify the degree of desaturation in healthy subjects during a NHIT and air travel; and (2) assess the validity of the NHIT when compared with actual in-flight responses.

Methods: Thirty-seven patients with mild CHI and 37 matched controls were compared at 1 week, 3 months and 6 months and 31 available pairs at 12 months post-injury on measures of saccades, oculomotor smooth pursuit, upper-limb visuomotor function and neuropsychological performance.
Objective: This paper examines clinical and forensic outcomes for defendants found not guilty by reason of insanity in New Zealand, and explores the implications for policy development and clinical rehabilitation in this population.
Method: All insanity acquittees disposed of by the courts as special patients after 1976 and released before 2004 are described. Their duration of inpatient care, rates of reconviction and rehospitalization following release are examined.
Background: Adiponectin is a cytokine produced by adipose tissue with insulin sensitising and anti-atherosclerotic effects. Low plasma adiponectin levels are used as a marker of the metabolic syndrome and incipient type 2 diabetes.
Methods: We carried out a series of studies to determine the short- and long-term variability of plasma adiponectin levels, including diurnal and post-prandial changes.
Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has increased exponentially in industrialized nations over the last 50 years. Previous New Zealand studies have shown that IBD is less common than in other countries; however, clinical observations suggested a high incidence and prevalence of IBD in Canterbury, particularly Crohn's disease (CD).
Aim: This study aimed to determine the descriptive epidemiology of IBD in Canterbury.
In a clinical non-trial setting, the efficacy and safety of caspofungin was compared with liposomal amphotericin B for the management of febrile neutropenia or invasive fungal infections in 73 episodes in patients with haematological malignancy. There were fewer episodes of drug toxicity with caspofungin than liposomal amphotericin B (58.3 vs 83.

Recently, variation in the ovine beta3-adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) gene has been reported to be associated with lamb survival. In this study, polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorphism analysis of part of the ADRB3 intron was used to genotype 4488 Merino lambs born at 10 farms throughout the South Island of New Zealand.

We compared the expression of cytoskeletal proteins in cultured ovine cardiac fibroblasts derived from infarcted (ID) and noninfarcted ovine myocardium (NID) and the levels of expression of the natriuretic peptide receptors (NPR)-A and NPR-B in response to treatment with transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 and/or platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). Transformation of cultured cardiac fibroblasts to myofibroblasts, as indicated by alpha-smooth muscle actin and vimentin expression, was independent of the presence of TGF-beta1, PDGF, or cell origin.

Method: Subjects were women participating in a randomized clinical trial evaluating the additive efficacy of exposure- and non-exposure-based behavioral treatment to a core of cognitive behavior therapy, with follow-up at 6 months post treatment. Complete data were available for 82 women.
Objective And Background: The role of COPD self-management plans in improving health outcomes remains unclear. The objective of this study was to assess whether self-management plans administered in primary care have beneficial effects on quality of life, self-care behaviour and health outcomes in the long term for patients with COPD.
Material, Patients And Methods: The study was a prospective, unblinded, randomized controlled trial of usual care vs.
Objectives: To compare the cost effectiveness of azathioprine (AZA), methotrexate (MTX) and no immunosuppression for maintaining remission of moderate to severe inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in New Zealand Caucasians, and to determine whether prospective testing for poor metabolisers of AZA by genotype or phenotype is cost effective.
Methods: Pharmacoeconomic models were developed to compare treatment costs and effects (QALYs) in theoretical populations of 1,000 IBD patients over a 1-year period. Efficacy and tolerability profiles for AZA and MTX were taken from the literature.
Aims: The aims of the present audit were to determine the prevalence of gout in renal transplant recipients in Canterbury, New Zealand, to identify risk factors for gout, and to assess the range of treatments used, their efficacy and complications. In addition, the authors wished to assess the impact of post-renal transplant gout on the patient.
Methods: Patients with post-transplantation gout were identified from the Christchurch Hospital Nephrology database.
Background: The AMPD1 gene C34T polymorphism has previously been associated with prolonged survival in small cohorts of heart failure (HF) and coronary artery disease patients. This study aimed to corroborate the association of the AMPD1 C34T polymorphism with survival in larger myocardial infarction (MI) and HF cohorts.
Methods: Genotypes were obtained for 935 post-MI (PMI) and 433 patients with established HF, with median follow-up times of 5.
The commercially available peptide coupling reagent 1-hydroxy-7-azabenzotriazole has been shown to crystallize in two polymorphic forms. The two polymorphs differ in their hydrogen-bonding motif, with form I having an R(2)(2)(10) dimer motif and form II having a C(5) chain motif. The previously unreported form II was used as an informal blind test of computational crystal structure prediction for flexible molecules.
