Allyl alcohol (C3H6O; prop-2-en-1-ol; CAS RN 107-18-6; EINECS 203-470-7) is used as an intermediate/monomer in polymerization reactions producing chemicals/optical resins or as a coupling/cross-linking agent for unsaturated polyester and alkyd resins. Human exposure to allyl alcohol (AA) is restricted to workplace manufacturing facilities where it is used in enclosed systems, which limits release and impact on environmental receptors. To address regulatory questions about possible developmental toxicity, two OECD Guideline studies were conducted.

The outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) in the United States in 2019 led to a total of 2807 hospitalizations with 68 deaths. While the exact causes of this vaping-related lung illness are still being debated, laboratory analyses of products from victims of EVALI have shown that vitamin E acetate (VEA), an additive in some tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing products, is strongly linked to the EVALI outbreak. Because of its similar appearance and viscosity to pure THC oil, VEA was used as a diluent agent in cannabis oils in illicit markets.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of physical rehabilitation and mobilization (PR&M) for adult patients on extracorporeal life support (ECLS), analyzing various studies comparing PR&M approaches with standard care.
  • Seventeen studies with nearly 1,000 patients were reviewed, primarily focusing on those undergoing venovenous and venoarterial ECMO in the ICU; however, the analysis lacked sufficient data for a meta-analysis, leading to a narrative summary.
  • Overall, the findings indicate an uncertain impact of high-intensity PR&M on patient outcomes like mortality and quality of life compared to low-intensity methods, with very low certainty in the evidence due to serious biases and im

Background: Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) is a form of life support used in severe respiratory failure. While the short-term complications of VV-ECMO are well described, impacts on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are less well characterised. This study aims to assess the HRQOL of patients who underwent VV-ECMO for acute severe respiratory failure and explore predictors of poor HRQOL.

Background: Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the guideline-recommended treatment for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). However, some patients develop severe cardiopulmonary compromise before surgery, intraoperatively, or early postoperatively. This may result from advanced CTEPH, reperfusion pulmonary edema, massive endobronchial bleeding, or right ventricular (RV) failure secondary to residual pulmonary hypertension.

Combined advances in haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and intensive care management have improved the survival of patients with haematological malignancies admitted to the intensive care unit. In cases of refractory respiratory failure or refractory cardiac failure, these advances have led to a renewed interest in advanced life support therapies, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), previously considered inappropriate for these patients due to their poor prognosis. Given the scarcity of evidence-based guidelines on the use of ECMO in patients receiving HCT and the need to provide equitable and sustainable access to ECMO, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, and the International ECMO Network aimed to develop an expert consensus statement on the use of ECMO in adult patients receiving HCT.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) exhibit a propensity for transformation to secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML), for which the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, resulting in limited treatment options and dismal clinical outcomes. Here, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing on serial MPN and sAML patient stem and progenitor cells, identifying aberrantly increased expression of DUSP6 underlying disease transformation. Pharmacologic dual-specificity phosphatase (DUSP)6 targeting led to inhibition of S6 and Janus kinase (JAK)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling while also reducing inflammatory cytokine production.
