Rapid demographic growth in tropical islands can exacerbate conflicts and pressures on natural resources, as illustrated by the French island of Mayotte where resources are limited. In only 10 years, uncontrolled migration and population growth (+80% of population between 2002 and 2021) have led to a pronounced 3600% increase in deforestation rates (2010-2014) and an intensification of agricultural practices, escalating conflicts over limited land, water, and biodiversity resources. Implementing an original multi-proxy approach to sediment cores, our study reveals a staggering 300% acceleration in erosion during the first wave of migration (2011-2015), followed by a further 190% increase (2019-2021) under sustained migratory and demographic pressures.

The oxygen species on Ag catalysts and reaction mechanisms for ethylene epoxidation and ethylene combustion continue to be debated in the literature despite decades of investigation. Fundamental details of ethylene oxidation by supported Ag/α-AlO catalysts were revealed with the application of high-angle annular dark-field-scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (HAADF-STEM-EDS), techniques (Raman, UV-vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), HS-LEIS), chemical probes (CH-TPSR and CH + O-TPSR), and steady-state ethylene oxidation and SSITKA (O → O switch) studies. The Ag nanoparticles are found to carry a considerable amount of oxygen after the reaction.

The nuclear cap-binding complex (CBC) coordinates co-transcriptional maturation, transport, or degradation of nascent RNA polymerase II (Pol II) transcripts. CBC with its partner ARS2 forms mutually exclusive complexes with diverse "effectors" that promote either productive or destructive outcomes. Combining AlphaFold predictions with structural and biochemical validation, we show how effectors NCBP3, NELF-E, ARS2, PHAX, and ZC3H18 form competing binary complexes with CBC and how PHAX, NCBP3, ZC3H18, and other effectors compete for binding to ARS2.

Magnetic transition metal chalcogenides form an emerging platform for exploring spin-orbit driven Berry phase phenomena owing to the nontrivial interplay between topology and magnetism. Here we show that the anomalous Hall effect in pristine CrTe thin films manifests a unique temperature-dependent sign reversal at nonzero magnetization, resulting from the momentum-space Berry curvature as established by first-principles simulations. The sign change is strain tunable, enabled by the sharp and well-defined substrate/film interface in the quasi-two-dimensional CrTe epitaxial films, revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry.

We report a synthesis method for highly monodisperse Cu-Pt alloy nanoparticles. Small and large Cu-Pt particles with a Cu/Pt ratio of 1:1 can be obtained through colloidal synthesis at 300 °C. The fresh particles have a Pt-rich surface and a Cu-rich core and can be converted into an intermetallic phase after annealing at 800 °C under H.
