Thermal Higgsino dark matter (DM), with mass around 1 TeV, is a well-motivated, minimal DM scenario that arises in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. Higgsinos may naturally be the lightest superpartners in split-supersymmetry models that decouple the scalar superpartners while keeping Higgsinos and gauginos close to the TeV scale. Higgsino DM may annihilate today to give continuum γ-ray emission at energies less than a TeV in addition to a linelike signature at energies equal to the mass.

Introduction: Pembrolizumab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor that promotes effector T-cell functions on malignant cells by binding to programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1). Pembrolizumab is well tolerated in most cases with an adverse event profile consisting mainly of pruritus, fatigue, and anorexia. Cardiotoxicity comprises 1% of the total adverse events.

Translational considerations for immunotherapy clinical trials in pediatric neuro-oncology.

While immunotherapy for pediatric cancer has made great strides in recent decades, including the FDA approval of agents such as dinutuximab and tisgenlecleucel, these successes have rarely impacted children with pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors. As our understanding of the biological underpinnings of these tumors evolves, new immunotherapeutics are undergoing rapid clinical translation specifically designed for children with CNS tumors. Most recently, there have been notable clinical successes with oncolytic viruses, vaccines, adoptive cellular therapy, and immune checkpoint inhibition.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is often recommended as a first-line treatment in depression. However, access to CBT remains limited, and up to 50% of patients do not benefit from this therapy. Identifying biomarkers that can predict which patients will respond to CBT may assist in designing optimal treatment allocation strategies.

Objective: There is limited literature on associations between inflammatory tone and response to sequential pharmacotherapies in major depressive disorder (MDD).

Methods: In a 16-week open-label clinical trial, 211 participants with MDD were treated with escitalopram 10-20 mg daily for 8 weeks. Responders continued escitalopram while non-responders received adjunctive aripiprazole 2-10 mg daily for 8 weeks.

Aberrant dopamine (DA) signaling is implicated in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BPD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), substance use disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Treatment of these disorders remains inadequate, as exemplified by the therapeutic use of d-amphetamine and methylphenidate for the treatment of ADHD, agents with high abuse liability. In search for an improved and non-addictive therapeutic approach for the treatment of DA-linked disorders, we utilized a preclinical mouse model expressing the human DA transporter (DAT) coding variant DAT Val559, previously identified in individuals with ADHD, ASD, or BPD.

Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor in a child masquerading as an intramedullary spinal pilocytic astrocytoma.

Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT) occurs predominantly in children and is typically characterized by diffuse leptomeningeal lesions throughout the neuroaxis with focal segments of parenchymal involvement. Recent reports have identified cases without diffuse leptomeningeal involvement that retain classic glioneuronal features on histology. In this report, we present a case of a 4-year-old boy with a large cystic-solid intramedullary spinal cord lesion that on surgical biopsy revealed a biphasic astrocytic tumor with sparsely distributed eosinophilic granular bodies and Rosenthal fibers.

Defining the filarial N-glycoproteome by glycosite mapping in the human parasitic nematode Brugia malayi.

N-linked glycosylation is a critical post translational modification of eukaryotic proteins. N-linked glycans are present on surface and secreted filarial proteins that play a role in host parasite interactions. Examples of glycosylated Brugia malayi proteins have been previously identified but there has not been a systematic study of the N-linked glycoproteome of this or any other filarial parasite.

Launching a Teaching Academy (Virtually) During a Pandemic: Silver Linings to a Challenge.

The pandemic disrupted our plans to launch a Teaching Academy to formally support medical educators. Moving forward virtually provided a collaborative and supportive network to plan and deliver professional development activities to navigate pandemic challenges. Through sharing and practicing new teaching technologies together, the social connection and engagement with colleagues helped navigate pandemic challenges.

Background: Augmented reality (AR) is a novel technology with many applications in medical education. Perhaps one of the most beneficial potential applications is to enable better clinical access for students; however, there is limited research into this use. The purpose of this mixed-methods feasibility study was to evaluate the applicability and acceptability of AR in undergraduate and early postgraduate medical education.

We performed Global Navigation Satellite System Acoustic seafloor geodetic surveys before and ~2.5 months after the 29 July 2021 (moment magnitude) 8.

Assessment of a multisite standardized biospecimen collection protocol for immune phenotyping in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Multisite collection and preservation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) for centralized analysis is an indispensable strategy for large cohort immune phenotyping studies. However, the absence of cross-site standardized protocols introduces unnecessary sample variance. Here we describe the protocol implemented by the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders (POND) Network's immune platform for the multisite collection, processing, and cryopreservation of PBMCs.

The role of the RAPID score in surgical planning for empyema.

Background: The RAPID [Renal (urea), Age, fluid Purulence, Infection source, Dietary (albumin)] score is a validated scoring system which allows risk stratification in patients with pleural infection at presentation. Surgical intervention plays a key role in managing pleural empyema.

Methods: A retrospective study of patients with complicated pleural effusions and/or empyema undergoing thoracoscopic or open decortication admitted to multiple affiliated Texas hospitals from September 1, 2014 to September 30, 2018.

Advances in Clinical Cardiology 2022: A Summary of Key Clinical Trials.

Introduction: Over the course of 2022, numerous key clinical trials with valuable contributions to clinical cardiology were published or presented at major international conferences. This review seeks to summarise these trials and to reflect on their clinical context.

Methods: The authors reviewed clinical trials presented at major cardiology conferences during 2022, including the American College of Cardiology (ACC), European Association for Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EuroPCR), European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT), American Heart Association (AHA), European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), TVT-The Heart Summit (TVT) and Cardiovascular Research Technologies (CRT).

Comparison of post-op opioid use and pain between short and long cephalomedullary nails in elderly intertrochanteric fractures.

Purpose: It remains unknown if cephalomedullary nail (CMN) length has an impact on pain and opioid use following fixation. Given the lack of level I evidence favoring a specific CMN length to prevent adverse surgical outcomes, we investigated if CMN length impacts acute postoperative pain and opioid use. The authors hypothesize that the use of longer CMNs results in increased pain scores and morphine milligram equivalents (MME) intake during the 0-24 h (h) and 24-36 h postoperative period.

Here, we report the detection and characterization of the genome of a novel poacevirus isolated from Zoysia matrella (Merrill) imported into the United States from Japan.
