Each year, millions of dogs enter thousands of animal shelters across the United States. Life in the shelter can be stressful, and one type of intervention that improves dogs' experience is human interaction, particularly stays in foster homes. Prior research has demonstrated that fostering can reduce dogs' cortisol and increase their resting activity.

Aim: To determine the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an intervention to promote self-management, independence and self-efficacy in people with early-stage dementia.

Objectives: To undertake a randomised controlled trial of the Journeying through Dementia intervention compared with usual care, conduct an internal pilot testing feasibility, assess intervention delivery fidelity and undertake a qualitative exploration of participants' experiences.

Persistent infection with some mucosal α-genus human papillomaviruses (HPVs; the most prevalent one being HPV16) can induce cervical carcinoma, anogenital cancers, and a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Cutaneous β-genus HPVs (such as HPV5 and HPV8) associate with skin lesions that can progress into squamous cell carcinoma with sun exposure in Epidermodysplasia verruciformis patients and immunosuppressed patients. Here, we analyzed mechanisms used by E6 proteins from the α- and β-genus to inhibit the interferon-β (IFNB1) response.

A bibliometric analysis of clinical research on fracture-related infection.

Background: Infection following orthopaedic trauma surgery is increasingly recognized as one of the major research priorities with as primary goal, improving patient care. This increased interest has been anecdotally recognized through published research, research grants, and, finally, with the development of the fracture-related infection (FRI) consensus group. In 2017, the accepted consensus definition of FRI was published, which has been followed by consensus recommendations from both a surgical and medical perspective.

Engineering Chiral Light-Matter Interactions in a Waveguide-Coupled Nanocavity.

Spin-dependent, directional light-matter interactions form the basis of chiral quantum networks. In the solid state, quantum emitters commonly possess circularly polarized optical transitions with spin-dependent handedness. We demonstrate numerically that spin-dependent chiral coupling can be realized by embedding such an emitter in a waveguide-coupled nanocavity, which supports two near-degenerate, orthogonally polarized cavity modes.

Results of the COMPARE trial of Constraint-induced or Multimodality Aphasia Therapy compared with usual care in chronic post-stroke aphasia.

Background: While meta-analyses confirm treatment for chronic post-stroke aphasia is effective, a lack of comparative evidence for different interventions limits prescription accuracy. We investigated whether Constraint-Induced Aphasia Therapy Plus (CIAT-plus) and/or Multimodality Aphasia Therapy (M-MAT) provided greater therapeutic benefit compared with usual community care and were differentially effective according to baseline aphasia severity.

Methods: We conducted a three-arm, multicentre, parallel group, open-label, blinded endpoint, phase III, randomised-controlled trial.

The role of maternal age & birth order on the development of unilateral and bilateral retinoblastoma: a multicentre study.

Background/objectives: Retinoblastoma is a common childhood intraocular malignancy, the bilateral form of which most commonly results from a de novo germline pathogenic variant in the RB1 gene. Both advanced maternal age and decreasing birth order are known to increase the risk of de novo germline pathogenic variants, while the influence of national wealth is understudied. This cohort study aimed to retrospectively observe whether these factors influence the ratio of bilateral retinoblastoma cases compared to unilateral retinoblastoma, thereby inferring an influence on the development of de novo germline pathogenic variants in RB1.

Choice of cover crop influences soil fungal and bacterial communities in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Soil fungal and bacterial communities play various roles in agroecosystems and are significantly influenced by agricultural management practices. Currently, little is known about the effects of selected cover crops on soil fungal and bacterial communities in no-till systems. In this study, eight cover crops, three mixed crops, and an unmanaged fallow control were evaluated over 2 years for their effects on the soil microbiome.

Establishing Recovery Colleges in mental healthcare services: A Royal Commission recommendation.

Recovery Colleges are an innovative education-based approach to support mental health recovery that, following the recent Royal Commission, will have to be established in every area mental health service within the state of Victoria. This paper describes the rationale, benefits and some of the key considerations to successfully establish Recovery Colleges. The establishment of Recovery Colleges has the potential to drive culture change within mental health services and embed recovery orientation within service provision as well as engaging service users in their own recovery journey.

Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover.

Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors.

Implementation and evaluation of social determinants of health practice models within community pharmacy.

Background: While community pharmacies are an ideal setting for social needs screening and referral programs, information on social risk assessment within pharmacy practice is limited.

Objectives: Our primary objective was to describe 2 social determinant of health (SDOH) practice models implemented within community pharmacies. The secondary objective was to evaluate implementation practices utilizing the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework.

Mental health needs in a large urban school district: Findings from a web-based survey.

Objective: To explore the mental health needs of students, and the professional development and support needs of teachers and school health professionals, as a way to foster community engagement and help set priorities for a comprehensive school mental health system in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD).

Setting: The study team surveyed all DPSCD staff in June 2019 and all students in grades 8-12 between October and December 2019.

Study Design: A descriptive study based on anonymous, web-based surveys focused on student trauma exposure and mental health symptoms, student mental health resource utilization, staff burnout, and professional development needs.

Primary care micro-teams: a protocol for an international systematic review to describe and examine the opportunities and challenges of implementation for patients and healthcare professionals.

Introduction: There has been a recent trend towards creating larger primary care practices with the assumption that interdisciplinary teams can deliver improved and more cost-effective services to patients with better accessibility. Micro-teams have been proposed to mitigate some of the potential challenges with practice expansion, including continuity of care. We aim to review the available literature to improve understanding of how micro-teams are described and the opportunities which primary care micro-teams can provide for practice staff and patients and limitations to their introduction and implementation.

Outcomes of attention-related communication deficits following traumatic brain injury: perspectives of international health professionals.

Primary Objective: Attention and communication difficulties are common yet often invisible following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The focus of this paper is to use practice-based evidence from health professionals working with individuals following TBI to gain a deep and relevant understanding of the impact that attention and communication can have in the lives of individuals following TBI.

Research Design: This dataset comes from a larger mixed-methods study that includes a survey with both open and closed questions and focus group data sources.

Post-artesunate delayed hemolysis after treatment of malaria with intravenous artesunate: A case study.

Delayed hemolysis is an uncommon reaction to intravenous artesunate for the treatment of severe malaria. We report a case of a patient who developed severe malaria after initial improper treatment, thus requiring IV artesunate therapy. Delayed hemolytic anemia then occurred and was monitored for weeks after completion of treatment.

Objective: Travel restrictions, physical distancing and quarantine requirements, lockdowns, and stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19 have impacted abortion services across Canada. We aimed to explore the decision-making and care experiences of those who obtained abortion services during the COVID-19 pandemic and understand recent abortion patients' perspectives on demedicalized models of medication abortion service delivery.

Study Design: We conducted 23 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with women across Canada who obtained abortion care after March 15, 2020.

The Experience of a Gluten-free Diet in Children with Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease.

Objective: This study examined overall self-reported adherence to gluten-free diet (GFD) in children with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease (T1DCD) compared to children with celiac disease (CD). Secondary objectives included gaining insight into self-reported symptoms, barriers to adherence, and experience of a GFD between groups.

Methods: Children <18 years old who had been seen at BC Children's Hospital for T1DCD or CD were invited to participate in a web-based questionnaire and medical record review.

For many animals, the juvenile stage of life can be particularly perilous. Once independent, immature animals must often complete the same basic survival functions as adults despite smaller body size and other growth-related limits on performance. Because, by definition, juveniles have yet to reproduce, we should expect strong selection for mechanisms to offset these ontogenetic limitations, allowing individuals to reach reproductive adulthood and maintain Darwinian fitness.

A Regional Intervention to Appoint Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinators in New England Emergency Departments.
